ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Host Sparta/Feyenoord opened the tenth edition of the annual Hudson John Tournament on Friday-evening with a 6-3 victory against MediaMonks RCH, which was leading 3-1 after three innings, but then gave up five runs in the fourth at bat.
RCH opened productively by scoring two runs in the first inning off Sparta/Feyenoord-starter Rob Cordemans, who threw the first three innings and played in his first game for the Rotterdam-squad.
The veteran righthander walked lead-off batter Nick Heij, then gave up an RBI-double to Michael Pluijmers, who had never faced Cordemans before.
Pluijmers advanced to third base on the throw to home, then scored when next batter Petr Baroch grounded out.
Czech Baroch and his countryman Jakub Malik both arrived earlier in the week. Baroch also played RCH last season, while Malik made his debut.
In his first at bat, Malik also grounded out, then the inning ended with a flyout.
RCH added a run in the third inning.
Lead-off batter Hector Iglesias Duarte reached base on a throwing error and moved to third when Nick Heij singled.
In his second at bat off Cordemans Michael Pluijmers struckout, but then a grounder by Petr Baroch resulted in another run and made it 3-0.
It was to be RCH's last run in the game.
Sparta/Feyenoord got one run back in the third inning.
In the inning before, Jonathan Kopra led off with a double, but then was doubled up after Rodney Michel flied to first base.
In the third, Roderick Simon led off with a single, then scored all the way from first base on an one-out double by Shaldimar Daantji, who stranded on second base.
In the fourth inning, Ronald de Bont took over the pitching for Rob Cordemans, gave up an one-out single to Ferd van Stekelenburg and then was supported with double plays in both the fifth and sixth inning after he had walked a batter.
In the home of the fourth, Sparta/Feyenoord rallied for five runs with two outs to take over the lead, 6-3.
Harvey Monte led off with a single, stole second base and advanced on a wild pitch.
After a flyout and strikeout, Monte scored on a double by Shurendell Borgschot, which put the rally into motion.
RCH-starter Jimmy van der Veldt then walked next batter Roderick Simon and got the bases loaded when Sape Wagenaar reached on an infield-hit.
The tying run was then scored when Shaldimar Daantji walked.
A single by Ramphis Trinidad gave Sparta/Feyenoord a 5-3 lead, as both Simon and Wagenaar scored.
It marked the end for Van der Veldt, who was relieved by Rick Pluijmers, but gave up a single to Gino Henson, enabling Daantji to score the sixth Rotterdam-run.
With runners on first and third base, Pluijmers eliminated Henson in a caught stealing-situation to end the inning.
Sparta/Feyenoord got its lead-off batter on base in the fifth and sixth inning, brought in five pinch-hitters in the seventh, but didn't add more runs.
Berry van Donselaar closed the game for Sparta/Feyenoord in the seventh, giving an one-out single, but then ended with two strikeouts to earn his second exhibition save.
