BUSSUM (Neth.) - Amsterdam Pirates opened the annual In Memoriam Charles Urbanus Sr. Tournament on Friday-evening with a 4-3 victory against host Mr. Cocker HCAW. Pirates, which hit two homeruns, led 3-0, but then HCAW came alongside in the seventh. In the eighth inning, Pirates re-took the lead.
The game started with a match-up between brothers Tom Stuifbergen (Pirates) and Nick Stuifbergen (HCAW). The first gave up only one basehit in four innings, then another one in the fifth, before being relieved. He was supported with two fine double plays, one in the first and the other in the fourth inning, as he allowed only two batters to reach base in that period.
In the first inning, he walked Rodney Michel with one out, but then Bas de Jong grounded into a double play. Stuifbergen retired seven batters in a row, before giving up a lead-off single to Ronald Jaarsma in the fourth inning, but this time Rodney Michel grounded into a double play.
Nick Stuifbergen gave up two runs right away in the first inning. With one out, Roderick Simon singled, then Tyson Arishenkoff hit a 2-run homerun. Next batter Derick Francisca was hit by a pitch, stole second, but stranded there.
In the third inning, the same three players also manufactured the third Pirates-run. With one out, Roderick Simon (who was 3-for-3) double, moved on a single by Tyson Arishenkoff and scored on a grounder by Derick Francisca.
In the fifth inning, Sidney de Jong led off for HCAW with a single, after which Robin Franken took over for Tom Stuifbergen. However, De Jong was forced out on second base on a grounder by Kenny Berkenbosch, who himself would strand on third base in this at bat. After the fielder's choice-grounder by Berkenbosch, Franken retired seven batters in a row. With two outs in the seventh inning, he was suddenly relieved by Maarten Mulder, who ran into problems. Pirates' Head Coach Louis Hofer was informed that no new inning was to begin (according to tournament rules) and wanted to use Mulder in the game, which he now did earlier than planned. However, there was more than 15 minutes left and a new inning was being played. The move almost cost Pirates the game. Mulder was greeted by a single from Sidney de Jong, who moved on a double by Kenny Berkenbosch. The two scored when veteran Gino Henson singled. After Henson stole second, he scored the tying run on a double by Bart Gabriëls, who reached third base on an error, but then then at bat ended on a grounder.
In the new inning, Pirates immediately regained the lead when Fausto Alvarez (who last season played for Pirates-3) led off with a homerun off Jos de Jong, who had taken over the pitching the previous inning. In the home eighth, pinch-hitter Nick Makkinje led off with a single, but then three flyouts followed to secure the lead and the win for Pirates.

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Organizing club Sparta/Feyenoord trailed 1-0 on Friday-evening in the opening game of the annual Hudson John Tournament, but went on to win 5-1 vs. ADO to register its first exhibition victory of the season.
Righthander Daan Baecke, who went the distance, gave up a one-out homerun to Percy Isenia in the second inning, but that was to be all for the team from the Hague, which didn't get more scoring opportunities.
In the home fourth, Sparta/Feyenoord came alongside off rookie righthander Jurrian Koks, who walked six batters in the 5-plus innings he pitched. With one out, Sjoerd Hermans walked and Jeffrey Sprott singled. The two advanced on a double-steal, but then Hermans was thrown out at the plate on a grounder by Orson Slaats. Next, Sprott scored the tying run when a throwing error was made on a grounder by Jeroen Hermans.
In the fifth, Sparta/Feyenoord took the lead when Earmy Isabella hit a one-out homerun.
In the sixth, the team from Rotterdam rallied for three runs to take a comfortable 5-1 lead, which also was the final score, as the time-limit (tournament rule) had passed. In this at bat, Jeffrey Sprott led off with a single and stole both second and third base. After Orson Slaats walked, Sprott scored on a single by Jeroen Hermans, which brought in new pitcher Tjibbe van Dijk. Another run was then scored when an error was made on a grounder by Patrick Wabbijn, followed by a sac-fly by Sil Wagenaar that lifted the score to 5-1.
Sparta/Feyenoord-starter Daan Baecke pitched all six innings and had a good outing, as he struckout six batters, walked none and gave upn only three basehits.
