HAARLEM (Neth.) - Reigning champion Sparks Haarlem opened the 22nd edition of the Holland Series on Saturday-afternoon with a narrow 1-0 win vs. A4 Terrasvogels. Game Two will be played on Sunday in Santpoort. Game Three, which is the canceled game from Friday, is tentatively scheduled for next Tuesday. In case Sparks also wins on Sunday, the third game will be played next weekend, as that then will be a championship clinching game. When Terrasvogels wins, the third game will be played on Tuesday-evening.
The lone run of the game was scored in the third inning when Kim Kluijskens reached on an error, then scored on three following singles. Winning pitcher Crissy Autry struckout eight and gave up only three basehits.

The opener lasted only one hour and 22 minutes and there was not much action, as both teams reached base only six times each. Terrasvogels registered three hits, Sparks had four, including three in the third at bat, resulting in the only run of the game.

Both teams got a runner in scoringposition quickly in the first inning, but failed to score. In the first Terrasvogels at bat, sandra Gouverneur led off with a single and then moved on a sac-bunt by Petra van Heijst. But then, a strikeout and a grounder followed.

In the home first, Kim Kluijskens led off for Sparks Haarlem with a triple into the leftfield-corner, but she also also stranded. She was unable to score on a short flyball to rightfield by Lynn Geertman, then couldn't advance on a grounder by Jolanda Kroesen. After Noémi Boekel walked, Terrasvogels-pitcher Kirsten Scheele struckout Marloes Fellinger to end the inning.

In the third inning, Sandra Gouverneur again reached base for Terrasvogels. With one out, she walked, then advanced on another fine sac-bunt by Petra van Heijst. But then the inning ended when Nina van Huissteden popped out.
In the home third, Sparks struck with one out. Kim Kluijskens then reached on a fielding error, followed by three singles, enabling her to score. Lynn Geertman followed with a bunt-single just out of reach for catcher Nina van Huissteden, first baseman Annemiek van Riessen and pitcher Kirsten Scheele. The bases were then loaded when Jolanda Kroesen singled to rightfield. Next, Noémi Boekel singled through the middle, enabling Kluijskens to score. More runs were then avoided, as second baseman Nicole Wessels made a fine catch on a line drive by Marloes Fellinger, then, sitting on one knee, threw the ball to third to double up Geertman and end the inning. With the line drive-out, Kirsten Scheele retired the next (and last) ten batters in a row from Sparks.

Terrasvogels got three more runners on base in the remaining four innings. In the fourth inning, Dana Horeman led off with a double over her sister and leftfielder Lyanne Horeman, but was left at second base, as Sparks-pitcher Crissy Autry then struckout the next two batters, followed by a foul-out.
In the sixth, Dana Horeman reached on a throwing error with two outs, but again was left behind.
In the seventh, Nathalie Gosewehr singled with one out, but then a strikeout followed. With pinch-hitter Yvette Krooder batting for Marieke Jansen, the game ended when Gosewehr was caught stealing.
