DUTCH NO-HIT PANAMA!!!
Nederlands
SAN JUAN (Puerto Rico) - The Dutch National Team ended its participation in the World Baseball Classic with a No-Hit Shutout vs. Panama, winning 10-0 in seven innings!
Shairon Martis pitched the entire (!) game and allowed only two batters to reach base. He needed 65 pitches, the maximum allowed for a pitcher in a game.

19-year old righthander Shairon Martis, a rookie in the Dutch national team, pitched himself in the recordbooks on Friday-afternoon by throwing a No-Hitter in his first official international game!
He is the first pitcher in Dutch history to do so. The only one who comes close is Han Urbanus, who pitched a No-Hitter in his second international game for the Dutch national team on August 7, 1949 against Belgium, which was the first ever No-Hitter by a Dutch pitcher in an international game. Martis' No-Hitter is the eighth in Dutch team history.
The last time a No-Hitter was pitched by a Dutch pitcher in an international game was in 2003 when both Eelco Jansen (vs. Sweden on the European Championships) and Patrick de Lange (vs. France during the Olympic Qualifying Tournament) threw one.
Only two Panamanian batters reached base. In the first inning Martis walked Olmedo Saenz with two outs. After that, he retired the next 16 batters in a row, before pinch-hitter Adolfo Rivera reached base on an error by third baseman Ivanon Coffie to lead off the seventh inning. But then a flyout followed and the game ended when pinch-hitter Cesar Quintero grounded into a double play.

The Dutch starting line-up looked very different today.
Michael Duursma (2B), Hainley Statia (SS), Danny Rombley (LF) and Percy Isenia (DH) all started today. For Duursma, this was his first game of the tournament. Dirk van 't Klooster, who didn't play against Cuba, returned in the starting line-up and played in centerfield, while Sidney de Jong moved back behind the plate.
This meant that professionals Chairon Isenia (C), Yurendell DeCaster (2B), Eugene Kingsale (LF), Andruw Jones (CF) and Sharnol Adriana (DH) were all on the bench, together with Raily Legito, who played the first two games at short. Ivanon Coffie (3B) and Randall Simon (1B) did start against Panama.

This starting line-up, seven of which are non-professionals, surprised with a 5-run, 6-hit rally in the first inning. Five of the first six batters deliverd a basehit. Michael Duursma led off with a single in his first WBC-at bat. After Ivanon Coffie struckout, Sidney de Jong and Randall Simon also singled to give the Dutch a 1-0 lead. The bases were loaded when Percy Isenia also singled, which led to a pitching change. Roger Deago took over from starter Miguel Gomez and gave up a 2-run double to Dirk van 't Klooster. Isenia also tried to score, but was thrown out at the plate. Next, Van 't Klooster scored when a grounder by Danny Rombley was misplayed by the short stop. Moments later, the Panamanian short stop Orlando Miller made a throwing error on a grounder by Harvey Monte to put runners on first and second base. And the inning wasn't over yet, as Hainley Statia, the ninth batter in the inning, added an RBI-single to make it 5-0. It also meant the end for Deago, who was relieved by Bienvenido Cedeņo, who finally was able to end the inning by striking out Michael Duursma.

In the third inning, the Dutch added another run on three consecutive hits. With two outs, Danny Rombley and Harvey Monte singled, then Hainley Statia added another RBI-single, making it 6-0, but three runners were left behind.
The Dutch team just kept on hitting and scoring and did it again in the fourth inning. Sidney de Jong led off with his third basehit in three at bats and was followed by a single by Sharnol Adriana, who had taken over at first base for Randall Simon the inning before. After Percy Isenia grounded into a double play, De Jong scored on a single by Dirk van 't Klooster.

And the scoring wasn't over yet.
In the fifth inning, there was another 3-run rally. With one out, Hainley Statia reached on an error and Michael Duursma singled. Ivanon Coffie followed with an RBI-single to make it 8-0 and force another pitching change. After Sidney de Jong was struckout by new pitcher Davis Romero, Sharnol Adriana contributed with an RBI-double. Percy Isenia then walked, but the fourth ball got away at the catcher for a wild pitch on which Coffie made it 10-0. Finally, the Dutch offense was limited to only one basehit in the sixth and seventh inning.

Shairon Martis, who pitched for the Rookie League team of the San Francisco Giants last season in the Arizona League, didn't struckout any batter in the game, but got a fine support from his defense. Martis, who pitched 11 games last season for the Giants, went 2-1 and struckout 50 batters in 34 innings, was impressive, as he retired 16 batters in a row from the first through the sixth inning. In the seventh inning, pinch-hitter Adolfo Rivera hit the ball off 3B Ivanon Coffie's glove, which was ruled an error by the Official Scorer. Martis then needed one pitch to get next batter Yoni Lasso to fly out and also threw only one pitch (his 65th and last) to get pinch-hitter Cesar Quintero to ground into a double play and end the game. Pitchers are limited to 65 pitches in the first round of the WBC.

Now the tournament is over for the Dutch team, they will back home on Saturday-morning.
