AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - On Saturday, vice-champion A4 Terrasvogels made six defensive errors, but nevertheless was able to come back and turn a 3-1 deficit into a 7-3 victory vs. Amsterdam Pirates in the first outdoor-exhibition game for both squads. The two teams already had played against each other two weeks ago in the indoor-facility of Pirates, which then lost 4-1. In January, Pirates and Terrasvogels participated in the Indoor Cup Tournament in Schiedam. Terrasvogels finished in ninth place, Pirates was thirteenth. In that event, Terrasvogels shutout Pirates, 7-0.

American pitcher Laura Chomokos, who had arrived the week before, made her debut in a Pirate-uniform and threw four innings. After retiring the first four batters she faced, the righthander gave up a single to veteran player Sandra Gouverneur, who stranded at first base, as the next two batters flied out. In the third inning, Marieke Jansen led off for Terrasvogels with a single, stole second base and then, after a strikeout, advanced to third base on a grounder, but also was left behind. Solange Starrenburg, who came to Terrasvogels after having played her first big league-season last year for Centrals, led off the fourth inning with a triple and went on to score the first run for her new team on an one-out grounder by Dana Horeman, who last season was nominated for the MVP Award.

At that moment, Terrasvogels trailed 2-0. The team from Santpoort, which last season (again) lost the Holland Series to Sparks Haarlem, made six errors, all in the infield, which is Terrasvogels-like, as the squad normally is known for its good fielding. Pirates opened the score with two runs in the third inning off starter Sandra Gouverneur, who last year played in Italy. Judith van Kampen, the regular starter for Terrasvogels, didn't play today, while the team had lost its other starter Kirsten Scheele to Dutch champion Sparks Haarlem. In the third, lead-off hitter Claudia Kotmans was awarded first base because of catcher's interference, then advanced to second base when first baseman Annemiek van Riessen made a fielding error on a sac-bunt by next batter Madelon Bronner. Hereafter, Montana van Maris batted the ball towards third baseman Dana Horeman, who opted to go for the force play on third, but threw the ball passed short stop Petra van Heijst into leftfield, enabling both runners to score. The inning then ended when two groundouts and a flyout followed.

After Terrasvogels had scored a run in the fourth inning, Pirates got it back in the home half of the at bat off new pitcher Dagmar Bloeming, who last season pitched for First Divisionist Koldijk Elektrotechniek Almere '90. She was greeted with a lead-off single by Cindy Baretta, one of the new players on the Pirate-roster, as she played for Van der Peijl DSC '74 last year. The newcomer stole second base and moved to third on a passed ball, then scored when another error was made on a 2-out grounder by Claudia Kotmans.

Trailing 3-1, Terrasvogels came back with a run in the fifth inning off new pitcher Shannah van der Kaaij, who last year played for Birds, which relegated from the big league. With two outs, Marieke Jansen singled and stole both second and third base, then scored when an error was made on a flyball by Nicole Wessels.
Terrasvogels turned the game around in its favor by scoring five unearned runs in the sixth inning. With one out, Petra van Heijst singled and stole second, before Solange Starrenburg also singled. Van Heijst was waved home and scored the tying run when catcher Pharba Vermeer made an error on the throw from centerfield, which enabled Starrenburg to reach third base. After Nina van Huissteden grounded out and Dana Horeman walked, Sandra Gouverneur followed with a 2-run triple, which gave Terrasvogels a 5-3 lead. Moments later, Gouverneur scored on a passed ball. Annemiek van Riessen then walked and increased the lead to 7-3 by scoring on a double by Olga Kleinlooh.

After giving up the third Pirates-run in the fourth inning, Terrasvogels-pitcher Dagmar Bloeming allowed only two more batters to reach base in the remainder of the game. In the sixth inning, she gave up an one-out single to Cindy Baretta, who had two of the three Pirates-hits. In the seventh, Antal Roos accounted for the third Pirate-hit with two outs.
The defensive highlight of the game happened at the conclusion of the top of the seventh inning when Pirate-rightfielder Nadia Bron made a great running catch on a line drive by Linda Hoenderdos.
