ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Mr. Cocker HCAW had to adjust its starting line-up on Sunday-afternoon because of some (new) injuries, but despite that the team recovered from yesterday's big 12-0 shutout-loss and today defeated Sparta/Feyenoord, 6-4.
The season already had started with some injuries, but this weekend there were more injuries for the Bussum-team. Before the game, third baseman Bart Gabriëls injured himself and had to be taken out of the starting line-up. Ralph Milliard, who last week returned to the line-up, but played the last three games at first base because of an injury, filled in at third base. Yesterday, rightfielder Bas de Jong didn't play, because of an elbow-injury, but today was the Designated Hitter. Outfielder Ronald Jaarsma, who was the DH the last four games because he also was slightly injured, returned into leftfield. Kenny Berkenbosch, who played mostly in the outfield this season, today was in relief and therefore didn't start. Besides that, Gino Henson also didn't play.
Because all of this, the line-up had to be adjusted by Roy Berrevoets, who filled in as Head Coach today. He took over for Patrick Vielvoye, who last week was appointed Head Coach, but today was unavailable due to work commitments. Berrevoets and Bench Coach Chicho Jesurun put utility Rodney Michel in centerfield, while outfielder Martijn Meeuwis played at second base. Jos de Jong, one of the pitchers, played in rightfield and rookie Sebastiaan Olgers made his debut and played at first base. In the end, that worked, as HCAW won 6-4.
HCAW opened the score right away in the first inning. Ralph Milliard led off with a single off starter Elton Koeiman, who then struckout Ronald Jaarsma. But then Sidney de Jong singled after which the two runners advanced on a grounder by Martijn Meeuwis. Next, Rodney Michel delivered a 2-run double to give HCAW an early lead.
The third run was added in the second at bat. Bas de Jong led off with a single, then moved when Jos de Jong walked with one out in his first big league plate appearance. Moments later, he was retired on a force play-grounder. The bases were then loaded when Ronald Jaarsma was hit by a pitch. Next, Sidney de Jong walked to bring in a run, but HCAW then left three runners as Martijn Meeuwis flied out.
In the fourth inning, Sebastiaan Olgers, who started the season in the First Division-team of HCAW, led off with a single, but would strand at third base, as Sparta/Feyenoord ended the inning with a double play.
HcAW increased its lead to 5-0 with two runs in the fifth inning. Sidney de Jong led off with a walk and moved to third base when next batter Martijn Meeuwis reached base safely on a throwing error by short stop Ramphis Trinidad. De Jong then scored on a single by Rodney Michel, who was 2-for-4 with three RBI's. After Michel was retired on a force play-grounder, Meeuwis scored on sac-fly by Bas de Jong.
Sparta/Feyenoord started to come back in the home fifth when it scored twice. HCAW-starter Nick Stuifbergen had given up only one basehit and two runners in the first four innings, but now gave up a one-out infield-hit to Marwin Kleinmoedig, who scored when Orson Slaats followed with a double. With two outs, Slaats scored on a single by Earmy Isabella. Ramphis Trinidad also singled, but the inning then ended with a flyout.
HCAW got one run back in the sixth inning. Elton Koeiman walked his fifth batter and again it was Jos de Jong. The pitcher would walk another time in the eighth inning by reliever Sander Klop, but was then retired in a double play. This time, De Jong moved on a single by Ralph Milliard, then scored on a one-out single by Sidney de Jong, before a double play ended the at bat.
After HCAW didn't score in the last three innings, Sparta/Feyenoord threatened in the home ninth. The Rotterdam-team hadn't scored in the previous three innings off Jurjen van Zijl, who had taken over for Nick Stuifbergen in the sixth. In the home ninth, Kenny Berkenbosch relieved Van Zijl, but would gave up four hits and two runs. First, Dwayne Kemp led off with a double. Earmy Isabella then singled into centerfield on which Kemp advanced to third base. Centerfielder Rodney Michel threw the ball back to short stop Dimitri Leon, but when he hesitated. Kemp reacted alertly and ran towards home. Leon's throw to home was not in time and Kemp scored. Isabella was then forced out on a grounder by Ramphis Trinidad, who underwent the same fate on a grounder by Patrick Wabbijn, which was followed by a throwing error trying to complete a double play. With Wabbijn on second base, Sjoerd Hermans delivered an RBI-single to make it 6-4. Jeroen Hermans then also singled, but with runners on first and second base, the inning and the game ended when rookie Sil Wagenaar was called out on strikes.

Cordemans leads ADO to win

THE HAGUE (Neth.) - ADO on Sunday recovered from Saturday-evening's 3-2 loss by winning 6-1 vs. Instant Holland Almere '90.
Pitcher Rob Cordemans went the distance for ADO and gave up only seven hits. The veteran righthander struckout eight batters to increase his career total to 997.
Cordemans, who needed 103 pitches, allowed only one player to reach third base in the game and that resulted in Almere's lone run in the first inning. In the opening at bat, Shaldimar Daantji reached first base on a close play infield-hit. He then advanced on a single by Randy Daal and a flyout by Bryan Engelhardt, before scoring on a sac-fly by Ivanon Coffie. In the next eight innings, Almere reached second base only two more times. Both times it was Ivanon Coffie, who doubled in the fourth and ninth inning with one out. In the fifth and sixth inning, Cordemans was supported with a double play.
Almere today played without its regular leftfielder Eugene Kingsale. On Saturday-evening, there already were some question marks why there was put in a pinch-hitter for the experienced former Major Leaguer with the bases loaded in the home ninth. Pinch-hitter Ferd van Stekelenburg, however, delivered a game-winning single. Today, it became clear that Kingsale had injured a groin-muscle while running the bases the inning before. Out of precaution, Kingsale didn't play today.
ADO had adjusted its batting order again today. Jermaine Esprit was back in the lead-off spot and Shurty Tremus (who was the lead-off in the last three games) now was the number two hitter. Maikel Benner and James Rutherford, who were batting in the bottom of the order the last three games, moved up a spot and also batted in a reversed order.
Trailing 1-0, ADO came alongside in the second inning. With one out, Percy Isenia doubled, moved on a single, then scored on a 2-out single by James Rutherford.
In the third inning, ADO took charge of the game with a 4-run rally. With one out, Shurty Tremus singled and Berry van Driel walked. Kalian Sams and Percy Isenia then followed with RBI-singles to give ADO a 3-1 lead. ADO loaded the bases when Harvey Monte walked, which led to a pitching change. Martin Kuipers took over for starter Forstin Coenraad and walked Maikel Benner to bring in another run. Next, Isenia was forced out at home on a grounder by James Rutherford, but then Michel Korzeniewski also walked to lift the lead to 5-1. Another pitching change followed and Derrick Isenia came in to relief Kuipers. This time, a groundout ended the inning.
ADO added a run in the fifth inning. With two outs, Maikel Benner singled and went on to score on a basesloaded single by Jermaine Esprit.
Almere was unable to come back off Rob Cordemans, who threw his second complete game in a row. ADO had ten basehits, with Percy Isenia going 4-for-4.
