HAARLEM (Neth.) - For the first time since 1996, Corendon Kinheim will play in the Holland Series again, after completing a 3-game sweep on Tuesday-evening. Kinheim trailed 4-1 vs. ADO, but came back to win 5-4 with two runs in the ninth inning.
It is only the second time in 14 Play-Offs particpations that Kinheim swept its opponent. The first time was in 1994 when they swept Mr. Cocker HCAW. Since 1995, Kinheim lost eight Play-Offs in a row and was swept four times itself in that span. Kinheim was also swept in 1989 and 1990, before it won five Play-Offs in a row from 1992-1996 to reach the Holland Series, but only in 1994, that resulted in the capturing of the Dutch title.

On Tuesday-evening, Kinheim opened the score with a run in the second inning. With one out, Edward Illidge singled into rightfield, then scored all the way from first base on a triple into deep rightfield by Roel Koolen. It was all ADO's Japanese starter Akira Okamoto was to give up at that point, as he settled down and struckout six batters in the next 3-plus innings, facing only nine batters from the third through fifth inning.

ADO had two runners on base with two outs in the first inning when Marvin Bleij and Percy Isenia singled off starter Duko Jansen, but then James Rutherford struckout.
In the third inning, ADO scored four unearned runs to take a 4-1 lead. The inning started when a grounder by Shurty Tremus down the third base-line was misplayed by third baseman Wouter Heemskerk. Tremus advanced on a sac-bunt by Jermaine Esprit, but then Maikel Benner walked. The two runners moved a base on another sac-bunt, this time by Marvin Bleij, but again a walked followed. The free pass for Percy Isenia loaded the bases. Next, James Rutherford singled in the tying run. Duko Jansen then threw his third walk in the inning to Adrian Anthony, which brought in the go-ahead run for ADO. Michel Korzeniewski followed with a 2-run single to increase the lead to 4-1. A throwing error towards home by centerfielder Danny Rombley enabled Anthony and Korzeniewski to move up a base, then Berry van Driel walk, loading the bases again. Duko Jansen was replaced by Jean-Paul Gulinck, who would do a fine job. The rookie lefthander was greeted with a line drive by Shurty Tremus into centerfield, but there Danny Rombley made a great diving catch to end the at bat and prevent more runs.

Gulinck would throw 5 1/3 innings and gave up no hits to ADO, which would reach base only four times off the lefthander, all by walks. In the fourth inning, ADO was close to its fifth run. Jermaine Esprit led off with a walk, moved on a sac-bunt, then stole third base. As he stole, Gulinck threw a wild pitch on which Esprit thought to have a chance to score. However, catcher Tjerk Smeets got the ball back in time and threw it to Gulinck, who tagged out the sliding Esprit. Instead of having a runner on third base with one out, ADO now had no one on base and two outs.

ADO's Akira Okamoto started to throw stronger from the third inning on, but then gave up a 2-out long homerun to Dirk van 't Klooster in the sixth. In the seventh inning, Edward Illidge led off with a towering homerun to leftfield, narrowing the deficit to only 4-3.
In the eighth inning, Robin van Doornspeek took over for Okamoto and struckout the side.

ADO reached base again in the ninth when Jean-Paul Gulinck walked lead-off hitter Shurty Tremus. Gulinck was relieved by closer Michiel van Kampen, who struckout next batter Jermaine Esprit, then gave up a force play-grounder to Maikel Benner. After a walk, the inning ended with a pop-fly.

Trailing 4-3, Kinheim came back strongly in the home ninth. Dirk van 't Klooster led off with a ground behind first base, but reached base safely on a throwing error by second baseman Berry van Driel. Next, Robin van Doornspeek walked Tjerk Smeets. A double into centerfield by Edward Illidge, who was 3-for-4, brought in Van 't Klooster with the tying run and put runners on second and third base. Van Doornspeek then loaded the bases by walking Roel Koolen intentionally and was relieved by Rob Cordemans, the starter of Game One last Saturday. With the bases loaded and no outs, Vince Rooi hit the ball into short rightfield where it was caught by Jermaine Esprit, but enabled Smeets to score the winning run.

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Reigning champion DOOR Neptunus trailed 2-0 in the fifth inning, but avoided a 3-game sweep on Tuesday by winning 5-2 vs. Konica Minolta Pioniers, which won twice in the weekend to take a 2-0 lead.

Calvin Madudo started for Neptunus. It was his first outing in three months, as he retired from professional baseball early June to become the Pitching Coach of the single-A team of the Baltimore Orioles. The righthander gave up two early runs, but then settled down and took control of the game.

In the first inning, Pioniers took a 1-0 lead. With one out, Mark Duursma singled, then Glenn Romney walked. The two advanced on a wild pitch by Maduro, then Duursma scored the opening run when Dè Flanegin grounded out.
Pioniers doubled the lead in the second inning. Lead-off hitter Edwin de Graaf reached on an error by short stop Raily Legito, then advanced to third base on a single by Marcel Venema. With one out, De Graaf scored on a sacrifice fly by Norbert Lokhorst to make it 2-0.

Pioniers failed to expand its lead in the fifth inning when it got the bases loaded with only one out. After Michael Duursma grounded out, Mark Duursma and Glenn Romney singled to bring runners on second and third base. Calvin Maduro then walked Dè Flanegin intentionally to create a force play and that worked out fine, as next batter Glennsig Polonius grounded into an inning-ending double play. In the next three innings, Maduro would retire seven batters in a row.

Neptunus was less lucky in its first four innings off lefthander Conrad Orman, who proved to have a successful pick-off move. In the first inning, Pioniers turned a double play, then Neptunus stranded two runners in the next at bat. In the third, Jeroen Sluijter led off with a single, but was caught stealing after a pick-off by Orman. In the fourth, Raily Legito also led off with a single, but he got into a rundown when Orman had another successful pick-off.
In the fifth inning, Neptunus started to come back and turned the game around. With one out, Evert-Jan 't Hoen walked and Melfried Comenencia singled. The two advanced on a double-steal, then both scored when Jeroen Sluijter followed with a double. As centerfielder Glenn Romney added an error, Sluijter advanced to third base. Conrad Orman was relieved by Erik Jan Lind, who was greeted with an RBI-single by Johnny Balentina, which gave Neptunus a 3-2 lead.

Neptunus added two more runs in the eighth at bat. With one out, Yuji Nerei walked, which marked the end for Erik Jan Lind, who was relieved by Tommy van Limburg. The side-armer walked Lennart Koster, then gave up an RBI-single to Rogearvin Bernadina, who had returned from the States on Monday-morning after completing his professional season. Evert-Jan 't Hoen also followed with a single, which lifted the lead to 5-2. After a flyout, the bases were loaded when Van Limburg hit Jeroen Sluijter with a pitch, but then a flyout ended the at bat.
In the ninth, Diegomar Markwell, the starter of Game One last Saturday, was brought in as reliever for Calvin Maduro, retired the side, including the last two batters with a strikeout, and earned a save.
