THE HAGUE (Neth.) - Reigning Dutch champion Corendon Kinheim, which last week started the season with a surprising split against Mr. Cocker HCAW, today won only 3-2 vs. ADO, which had started with a double loss vs. L&D Amsterdam.
Kinheim, which had only two basehits in last Sunday's 9-0 loss vs. HCAW, today had only four basehits and was outhit 7-4. The Haarlem-squad was held hitless for 5 1/3 inning by veteran starter Erik Remmerswaal, who went the distance for ADO. The righthander, who last season pitched for Instant Holland Almere '90, retired 14 of the first 15 batters he faced. After retiring the first eight in order, Remmerswaal walked Denny Beljaards with two outs in the third, but then retired the next six again. With two outs in the fifth, two Kinheim-batters reached base on an error, which would result in the first run and Remmerswaal himself was accountable for it. Jeffrey Verbij reached second base on a throwing error by third baseman Jaïr Roseburg, then scored when Remmerswaal made an error on a comeback-grounder by next batter Wouter Heemskerk.
Kinheim's second run also started with an error. In the sixth, with one out, René Cremer reached second base on another throwing error, then scored when Dirk van 't Klooster followed with a single, which was the first in the game for his team. In the seventh inning, Kinheim increased the lead to 3-0. Tjerk Smeets led off with a single, moved on a grounder, then a single by Wouter Heemskerk and scored on a 2-out single by Danny Rombley. Hereafter, Erik Remmerswaal retired eight of the next nine batters again, only interrupted by a walk in the ninth inning.
Kinheim's starter David Bergman also didn't gave up a basehit in his first three innings, but two ADO-batters reached base, the first on a walk, the second on an error. In the fourth, the righthander gave up an one-out single to Dave Steward, who later advanced on an error, but then was caught stealing. Steward, who batted 3-for-6 with three RBI's last weekend in de 2-game series vs. Amsterdam, was moved up in the batting order from the sixth to the third place and went 1-for-3 today.
After leaving a runner in the fifth and sixth inning, ADO threatened to not only come alongside, but even take the lead in the seventh inning. With one out, Rodrinov Faries singled, which led to a pitching change. Nick Veltkamp came in to relief starter David Bergman, but ran into problems. He walked Jaïr Roseburg, then gave up a single to Gregory Hassell, which loaded the bases. An error on a force play-grounder by Ludwin Obispo then resulted in a run and left the bases loaded. Moments later, Roseburg scored on a single by Quensley Bazoer. With the bases still loaded, the inning came to a suddenly end on a grounder by Dimitri Leon. His grounder resulted in Bazoer being forced out at second base, but then Leon also was ruled out, as Bazoer broke up the double play by remaining in his basepath while being out already. The double play broke up the rally and ADO's possibility to come back. In the eighth inning, Kinheim turned a 'real' double play, then ADO stranded two runners in the nine, ending the game.
