ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Just like in the Opening Weekend, Mr. Cocker HCAW this weekend opened with a big loss, but came back with a shutout-win the next day. Last week, the team started with a 13-3 loss vs. Corendon Kinheim, then shut them out 9-0. Yesterday, HCAW again was beaten 13-3 and today won 3-0.
Three HCAW-pitchers combined on a 5-hitter, while HCAW itself produced only four basehits. American starter Adam Sowell struckout three and gave up only two hits in the five innings he pitched. Next, Forstin Coenraad gave up three basehits in the next three at bats, before Venezuelan/Spanish reliever Fernando José Gutierrez Gutierrez made his debut in the Dutch league and threw the ninth inning in which struckout the first two batters he faced and retired the side to earn his first save of the season. Sowell retired the first seven batters he faced, then walked Sape Wagenaar, but two groundouts ended the at bat. In the fourth, former HCAW-player Gino Henson led off with a single, but HCAW then turned a double play. In the fifth, Sowell gave up an one-out single to Roderick Simon, but he stranded on first base. After Forstin Coenraad retired the side in the sixth, he gave up lead-off singles to Harvey Monte and Percy Isenia, but then a force play and a double play followed. In the eighth, Sparta/Feyenoord got two batters on base when Sape Wagenaar walked with one out and Imco Rudolph singled with two outs, but again HCAW escaped unharmed. Fernando Gutierrez then closed the game for the Bussum-squad.

HCAW, which had its batting order changed in four places, struck with two runs in the first inning. Sparta/Feyenoord-starter Herman Gaarman walked lead-off batter Ralph Milliard, then loaded the bases by giving up a single to Jermaine Esprit and hitting next batter Bart Gabriëls with a pitch. A run was then scored when Randy Daal grounded into a double play. After Ronald Jaarsma walked and reached second base on a fielder's choice, Esprit stole home to make it 2-0. Adrian Anthony also walked and then the inning ended when Jaarsma was thrown out at the plate when he tried to score on a single by Shurty Tremus. Hereafter, the HCAW-offense was silenced for the next six innings. From the second inning on, Herman Gaarman retired 13 batters in order, then was relieved with one out in the sixth by Berry van Donselaar, who retired the next two batters to end the inning. In the seventh inning, HCAW reached base twice, but both runners stranded.
The Bussum-squad added an insurance run in the eighth inning off new pitcher Arístides Almenar, who also had given up two runs yesterday. After striking out Ralph Milliard, the Venezuelan righthander gave up a single to Jermaine Esprit, who then stole both second and third base. Almenar also struckout next batter Bart Gabriëls, but Randy Daal followed with an RBI-single to make it 3-0. In the ninth, Almenar retired the side, including two strikeouts.
