Neptunus hands former pitcher first loss

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - It was a much anticipated game when DOOR Neptunus faced ADO on Thursday in the opening game of a 3-game series. After last season, five national team-players left Neptunus to play for ADO. Today, Neptunus faced Rob Cordemans, its pitching ace of the last 12 seasons, but went on to win 8-4 and hand the righthander his first loss of the season.
Besides that, Neptunus extended its winning streak against ADO to 19 games. After ADO won 6-2 on June 30, 2002, Neptunus would win the next 19 regular season games between the two teams, including today's.

Initially, ADO was leading 2-0 in the fourth inning, but Neptunus rallied for four runs in the fifth at bat to take control of the game. In the first inning, two of the former Neptunian players contributed to the first ADO-run. With two outs, Harvey Monte singled, then scored when Percy Isenia followed with another single.
ADO made it 2-0 in the fourth inning. After giving up a lead-off single in the second inning, Neptunus-starter Gregory Gustina retired eight batters in a row, but then Kalian Sams doubled. Marvin Bleij then walked and Berry van Driel followed with an RBI-single.

For the first time in his career, Rob Cordemans took the mound in the Neptunus Familystadium in another uniform than that of Neptunus (not counting appearances for the Dutch national team). The righthander walked two batters with two outs in the first inning, but ended with a strikeout. After a one-two-three second inning, Cordemans gave up two lead-off singles in the third, but again ended the at bat unharmed. But in the fourth inning, he accounted for the first Neptunian run himself. With one out, Cordemans walked Evert-Jan 't Hoen, then made a throwing error on a grounder by next batter Melfried Comenencia, that allowed 't Hoen to score all the way from first base.
In the fifth inning, Neptunus rallied for four runs on five consecutive basehits off Cordemans with two outs. Raily Legito and Yuji Nerei then singled, followed by an RBI-single from Lennart Koster. Next, Evert-Jan 't Hoen (2-run) and Melfried Comenencia added RBI-doubles to make it 5-2 in Neptunus' favor.

ADO answered with two runs in the fifth to narrow Neptunus' lead to 5-4 when James Rutherford led off with a single and Kalian Sams followed with a 2-run homerun. Gregory Gustina then walked Marvin Bleij, but a double play followed. Raily Legito then made an error on a grounder by Shurty Tremus, but a force play ended the inning. Gustina then added two scoreless innings, before being relieved by Jan Naterop, who threw the ninth inning.
In the sixth inning, Neptunus scored another run, then added two insurance runs in the eighth inning on a 2-run triple by Raily Legito to make it 8-4. The win for Neptunes meant the first loss for Rob Cordemans, who now is 5-1 and ended ADO current 8-game winning streak.

Weather spoils HCAW vs. Kinheim game

BUSSUM (Neth.) - From 7:30 AM in the morning, work was done to the field of HCAW after it had rained a lot the day before. Water had covered the entire field and new dirt was put on the infield, around the bases and in the home plate area. In the morning, Coaches Maurice DeConge and Cliff Foster and some players assisted by making the field playable again, just as they did last Sunday. And it appeared that everything would be fine and that the game between Mr. Cocker HCAW and Corendon Kinheim could be played as scheduled. Just as the game between HCAW and ADO could be played last Sunday with a delay of 46 minutes.

In the meantine, Kinheim had arrived in Bussum, as was the umpire crew. But then, a new rain shower spoiled everything. After the rain of last Sunday and that of yesterday, the field simply coudn't handle more water. As a result, the field became unplayable and nothing could be done anymore. Therefore, the game had to be canceled and was re-scheduled for next Tuesday, March 30.

Pioniers wins in ninth inning

HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - Konica Minolta Pioniers got a fine performance from its new pitcher, but won only 2-1 vs. Instant Holland Almere '90 Thursday to end a 5-game losing streak.

A little more over two days after arriving in Hoofddorp, Raul Quiroz threw seven solid innings for Pioniers. The righthanded American struckout seven batters and gave up only three basehits, all singles, to make a fine debut for Pioniers and in the Dutch big league. With his performance, Quiroz did a lot better than Venezuelan Erkly Esteban Hinojosa Viloria, who appeared in only two games. In those games, he threw only 1/3 inning, facing seven batters, walked three batters, gave up three hits and five runs, including four earned for an 108.11 ERA. Because of this disappointing results, Pioniers decided to release Hinojosa and replace him with Quiroz.
But despite the good debut of Quiroz, Pioniers initially trailed briefly. In the third inning, Ricky Daal led off for Almere with a single, moved on a sac-bunt and an error, then scored on a sac-fly by Ivanon Coffie. But starting with the sac-fly, Raul Quiroz retired eleven batters in a row, before giving his third and last basehit in the seventh inning.
Pioniers was close to its first run in the second inning. With two outs, Edwin de Graaf then reached on an infield-hit and stole second, but was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a single by Lars Koehorst.

In the fourth inning, Pioniers tied the score. Norbert Lokhorst led off with a walk, moved on a sac-bunt and scored on a single by Dè Flanegin, which was followed by a double play. Almere-starter Derrick Isenia then also didn't gave away much, as he threw four scoreless innings, in which he gave up only one basehit.
In the eighth, Daniël Overbeek took over for Raul Quiroz and got help from a double play. In the ninth inning, with a runner on first base and one out, closer Dave Draijer relieved Overbeek and ended the inning with a flyout and a groundout.
In the home ninth, Derrick Isenia gave up a lead-off single to Dè Flanegin and was relieved by Nick Veltkamp. The lefthander walked lefthanded hitting Glenn Romney and was replaced by Jerry Breek. On second base, Flanegin was replaced by rookie Bart Sabel, who made his big league-debut. The two runners then moved a base when first baseman Jason Halman made an error on a sac-bunt by Edwin de Graaf. With the bases loaded, Lars Koehorst drove the ball into the outfield for a sacrifice fly, enabling Sabel to score the winning run.

Pirates homers to victory

AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - Amsterdam Pirates trailed twice on Thursday, but went on to win 6-5 vs. Sparta/Feyenoord to register its third win in a row and climbed another spot in the ranking in which it now is in sixth place.

In his first big league-start, Bobbie van Duuren gave up seven basehits and struckout four batters in throwing seven innings for Pirates to earn his first win on the highest level. The righthander saw Sparta/Feyenoord take the lead twice, but his teammates supported him with solid offense and came back to win the game.
In the second inning, Van Duuren gave up an one-out homerun to Jeffrey Sprott, his league-leading third of the season. He then hit next batter Jeroen Hermans with a pitch and walked Orson Slaats. The bases were loaded when Ramphis Trinidad singled. Sparta/Feyenoord then added a run on sac-fly by Earmy Isabella, but the inning ended with a force play-grounder.

Pirates answered with three runs in the home second off Elton Koeiman, who went the distance for the Rotterdam opponent. Koeiman walked lead-off hitter Ralph Lagas, then gave up a single to Kevin Gerard. Next, Björn Henrichs reached on a bunt-single and when Koeiman made a throwing error in an attempt to eliminate him, Lagas scored. With runners on second and third, Mark Kan also singled to bring in the tying run. After a flyout, Henrichs scored the go-ahead run on a sac-fly by Derick Francisca, after which Kan was doubled up at first base, but not before Henrichs had scored.

In the third inning, Sparta/Feyenoord came back immediately with two runs. With one out, Sjoerd Hermans singled and Rutger Veugelers was hit by a pitch. A grounder by next batter Jeffrey Sprott was then missed by first baseman Ralph Lagas, which enabled both runners to score and give Sparta/Feyenoord a 4-3 lead. But Lagas would made up for his error.
In the home third, Tyson Arishenkoff walked with one out. Then, with two outs, Ralph Lagas hit a big 2-run homerun, his first fourbagger since he hit three in 2004, to give Pirates a 5-4 lead.
In the sixth inning, Lagas hit another homerun, this time a long solo-shot to add an insurance run and make it 6-4. With his two homeruns, Lagas produced 50 percent of his career total, as he had hit only four homeruns since making his debut in 2001.
His second roundtripper proved to be important and indeed was the insurance run, as Sparta/Feyenoord would score a run in the eighth inning off Robin Franken, who had started the inning in relief of Bobbie van Duuren. Jeffrey Sprott led off with a single, stole second and moved on a single by Jeroen Hermans, then scored on a one-out double by Ramphis Trinidad. Franken was relieved by Maarten Mulder, who intentionally walked Earmy Isabella to set up a force play. That worked, as Hermans was forced out at home on a grounder to third by Dwayne Kemp, then ended the inning with another grounder. In the ninth, Mulder retired the side to earn his first save of the season.
