HCAW falls further behind

HAARLEM (Neth.) - Corendon Kinheim remained league-leader and handed Mr. Cocker HCAW its fourth loss in the last five games by winning 6-3 on Sunday-afternoon. With the loss, HCAW is now seven points behind fourth place in the ranking. The top-four qualifies for the Play-Offs to be played in September.
Again there were changes in the HCAW line-up. Utility Rodney Michel returned after a short absence, but today, outfielder Martijn Meeuwis didn't play, as he was still bothered by an injury, while infielder Dimitri Leon also didn't play.

Kinheim opened the score in the second inning. With one out, Edward Illidge singled and advanced on a 2-out single by Quincy Bernardus. He then scored when Wouter Heemskerk also followed with a single. But Kinheim then stranded two runners when Denny Beljaards struckout.
The Haarlem-club doubled its lead in the next at bat. René Cremer walked with one out, then reached second base on a single by Dirk van 't Klooster and scored on a single by Tjerk Smeets. But then, just as in the second inning, Kinheim left two runners behind when a strikeout and a groundout followed.
HCAW came alongside in the fourth inning. Lead-off hitter Ronald Jaarsma was hit by a pitch, but then was forced out on a grounder by Sidney de Jong. A single by Bas de Jong brought him to second base. After Nick Makkinje struckout, a grounder by Bart Gabriëls may have ended in a double play, but an error was made instead to load the bases. Gino Henson followed with a single that gave HCAW two runs and tied the score. HCAW then also left two runners, as Rodney Michel flied out to end the inning.

Kinheim failed to add runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning when it left eight runners behind on the bases. In the fourth, Kinheim loaded the bases with two outs off starter Nick Stuifbergen on a single, throwing error and a walk. But then, Dirk van 't Klooster grounded out. In the fifth, the Haarlem-club again reached base with two outs on a single and a walk, but this time Wouter Heemskerk grounded out. In the sixth, Cliff Foster took over for Stuifbergen and walked the first two batters he faced. After the two moved on a sac-bunt, the lead runner was eliminated at home on a grounder, but then the bases were loaded on another walk. Now, the at bat ended when Foster struckout Edward Illidge.
But in the seventh inning, Kinheim had more luck, scored four runs and took a 6-2 lead. They got the bases loaded when Roel Koolen was hit by a pitch, then Quincy Bernardus and Wouter Heemskerk walked. Cliff Foster was relieved by rookie Joey Eijpe, who made his big league-debut. The lefthander gave up a sac-fly to Denny Beljaards, which gave Kinheim a 3-2 lead. Eijpe then struckout Danny Rombley, but then Kinheim increased its lead. René Cremer first singled in two runs, then he scored himself when Dirk van 't Klooster followed with a triple.

HCAW had gotten a chance to take the lead in the sixth inning. Sidney de Jong led off with a single and moved on a sac-bunt. After a foul-fly, Kinheim-starter David Bergman walked Bart Gabriëls, then gave up a single to Gino Henson (who was 3-for-4). On the single, De Jong tried to score, but was thrown out at the plate on a throw by centerfielder Danny Rombley.
In the eighth inning, trailing 6-2, HCAW added a run off new pitcher Jimmy van der Veldt. Sidney de Jong walked and was awarded second base on a balk, then moved on a throwing error and scored on a grounder by Nick Makkinje.
In the ninth inning, Duko Jansen pitched for Kinheim, struckout two and earned his second save in two days.

Sparta/Feyenoord shuts out Pirates

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Sparta/Feyenoord recorded a 3-0 shutout on Sunday vs. Amsterdam Pirates, but scored its runs after Pirates was forced to make a pitching change in the third inning.

In the first four innings, the game was scoreless and nothing much happened. Or did it?
Let's go to the third Sparta/Feyenoord-at bat. In the first two innings, two Rotterdam-batters had reached base with a walk, but didn't go beyong first base. In this at bat, a third batter walked, Dwayne Kemp with one out. Next batter Nick Eppinga followed with a single, then suddenly Pirates-starter Kevin Miner was standing down the third base-line on his way to the dug-out. It wasn't clear why, but the rookie pitcher had been ejected by Marlo Remilia, who this season offiates his first games behind the plate in the big league. Afterwards, it was reported that Miner had said something regarding balls and strikes, on the other hand, it was said that the young pitcher reacted to himself instead of saying something towards the umpire. Anyhow, Pirates was forced to go to the bullpen where no one was warming up at that moment. How things would have gone when Miner would have remained in the game, no one will ever know. Pim Walsma was brought in and did a great job, as he finished the inning by striking out Jeffrey Sprott and Rutger Veugelers.

In the fourth inning, Walsma was supported with a double play, but then gave up a run in the fifth. He walked lead-off hitter Marwin Kleinmoedig, who advanced on a sac-bunt by Earmy Isabella, then scored on a double by Dwayne Kemp. Walsma again followed with a strikeout and ended the inning with a flyout.
In the sixth inning, the lead-off hitter of Sparta/Feyenoord scored again, but needed no help from his teammates, as Rutger Veugelers hit his first homerun of the season. Again, Walsma recovered and retired the next three batters, including another strikeout.
Mark Kan took over the pitching in the seventh inning and gave up Sparta/Feyenoord's last run. Marwin Kleinmoedig led off with a single, followed by a bunt-single by Earmy Isabella. The two runners then advanced on a sac-bunt by Dwayne Kemp. Next, Kleinmoedig was picked off third base by catcher Roderick Simon, which came moments before Nick Eppinga singled to score Isabella.

Pirates today faced Satoru Fujii as pitcher instead of Elton Koeiman, who was initially announced as today's starter, but was unable to throw. The choice to go with Fujii was surprising, as the Japanese righthander also started last Thursday-evening and then threw seven innings vs. Instant Holland Almere '90. Fujii therefore worked on only two days rest, but had a great outing as he went the distance today and gave up only three basehits, while striking out eight batters. Pirates had not much scoring opportunities. In the fourth inning, Roderick Simon led off with a walk, then advanced on a wild pitch with one out, but also tried to reach third base where he was thrown out. In the seventh inning, with two outs, Fausto Álvarez hit his seventh double of the season, then Ralph Lagas walked, but a flyout ended this chance, which was the last for the Amsterdam-squad.

Pioniers wins big vs. Almere
Nederlands | Line Score | Box Score | Pioniers' previous game | Almere's previous game
Standings | Schedule | All Line Scores & Box Scores
HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - Konica Minolta Pioniers on Sunday-afternoon won comfortably with a 12-2 score vs. Instant Holland Almere '90 in a game, that not only was interrupted by rain, but ended in a strange way.

Before the game, Pioniers was honored by the club for winning the European CupWinners Cup last week in Prague (Czech Republic). That happened in the company of representatives from the Dutch Baseball Federation (KNBSB), the European Baseball Federation (CEB), as well as the Mayor and Alderman of the Municipality of Haarlemmermeer, where Hoofddorp is part of. Also honored was the Little League Baseball Team of Pioniers, which won the Dutch title and now will represent the Netherlands on the European Championships in July in Poland. During the ceremony, it already started to rain and continued to do some the entire game.
Almere took a 1-0 lead, but Pioniers came alongside immediately, before taking more distance. The Hoofddorp-team then added eight runs in the seventh and eighth inning when the Almere-defense fell apart.

In the second inning, Bryan Engelhardt led off with a triple, then gave Almere a 1-0 lead when he scored on a sac-fly by Giovanni Samboe.
Pioniers came alongside in its second at bat. Mark Duursma led off with a single and moved on two groundouts. He then scored the tying run on an infield-hit by Lars Koehorst, who collided with first baseman Ricky Daal, as he was standing on the baseline while the throw went passed the base. A discussion regarding obstruction followed, but in the end Koehorst remained on first base and the score was tied. Jefferson Muzo then struckout to end the inning.

In the third at bat, Pioniers took a 2-1 lead when Edwin de Graaf doubled with one out and scored on a 2-out single by Dè Flanegin. De Graaf also scored the next run when he singled with one out in the fifth inning. He then reached third base when Glenn Romney singled, then scored when a throwing error was made on a force play-grounder by Dè Flanegin. Then, while the game had reached an official status, the umpire crew decided to interrupt the game, as it started to rain heavier. After a 35-minute delay, the game resumed, but during the break it was discussed whether or not the game had to be interrupted. Discussions concerning starting a game or not while it is raining and discussions concerning an unwritten rule that says when a game is started in the rain, it has to be completed (continued) in the rain, whether or not the rain increases. When the game resumed, Martin Kuipers became Almere's new pitcher, relieving starter Derrick Isenia. He needed only one pitch to end the inning as Mark Duursma lined into a double play.
Pioniers made it 4-1 in the sixth at bat. With one out, Mark-Jan Moorman walked and stole second base. He couldn't advance when Lars Koehorst singled behind second base, after which the bases were loaded when Jefferson Muzo walked. On a force play-grounder by Michael Duursma Muzo was eliminated at second base, but Moorman was able to score.
Almere came back with a run in the seventh inning. Richard Orman, who started the game and returned after the rain-delay, walked lead-off hitter Bryan Engelhardt, who scored when Giovanni Samboe followed with a double.

In the seventh and eighth inning, Pioniers added eight runs, only one of which was earned, as Almere committed four errors. In the seventh, new pitcher Nick Veltkamp walked lead-off hitter Glenn Romney, who was eliminated on a grounder by Dè Flanegin. Next, Mark Duursma walked and a possible double play-grounder by Norbert Lokhorst followed. But then third baseman Sidney Ensermo threw the ball passed second base, which loaded the bases. Another force play-grounder followed, this time by Mark-Jan Moorman. Flanegin was force out a home, but then catcher Giovanni Samboe threw the ball passed first base trying to complete a double play. The error gave Pioniers two more runs and a 6-2 lead. A strikeout then ended the inning, but the problems weren't over yet for Almere.
In the eighth inning, Jerry Breek became Almere's fourth pitcher. He was greeted with a single by Jefferson Muzo, who then stole second base and moved to third base on a groundout. A single by Edwin de Graaf enabled him to score. Glenn Romney followed with another single, as did Dè Flanegin, who batted in another run. The bases were then loaded when Mark Duursma walked. Norbert Lokhorst then flied out and while Romney had broken from third base, he returned, but then was able to reach home plate a lot easier when rightfielder Wesley Bernardus made a throwing error towards the plate. Pioniers then scored two more runs when third baseman Sidney Ensermo made a throwing error on a grounder by Mark-Jan Moorman, who himself was able to reach third base on the error. With the score now standing at 11-2, Jerry Breek decided to end the game himself, giving Pioniers a 10-run difference. The righthander threw his next delivery nowhere near the plate, but instead somewhere high on the far left side of his catcher to give Moorman a simple opportunity to bring the score to 12-2 and end the game with this weird wild pitch, a delivery which hasn't been seen much in a baseball game, even with a big run-difference to end the game.
