NIJMEGEN (Neth.) - MediaMonks RCH closed the first day of 20th Jan van de Vegte Memorial Tournament in Nijmegen with a 3-1 victory vs. host De Hazenkamp. The day started with the game between De Hazenkamp and Konica Minolta Pioniers, then Mr. Cocker HCAW met RCH in the previous game.
De Hazenkamp, which opened with a surprise 4-2 win vs. Pioniers, threatened again in this game, but stranded ten runners, including six in scoring position.
RCH-starter Jean-Paul Gulinck, who last year pitched for Dutch champion Corendon Kinheimn, walked lead-off hitter Steffen Vos, then also walked Dylan Kamoen with two outs, but ended the at bat with a strikeout.
In the second inning, Wilvin Cespedes Mejia led off with a double, but then was caught stealing at third base. Later in the inning, Bas Timmer reached second base, but stranded there, as Gulinck struckout another batter and ended with a groundout.
RCH then opened the score in its third at bat, after Floris Morang (who doubled) had stranded in the previous inning.
Lex Leijenaar and Nick Heij led off with singles, then rookie Michael Pluijmers hit an one-out RBI-single to score Leijenaar and put Heij at third base.
Next, Robin Longhurst was called out, as he was hit by his batted ball, before the inning ended with a flyout.
De Hazenkamp came alongside in the fourth inning off new pitcher Martin Kuipers.
Paul Sabel led off with a single, then Wilvin Cespedes Mejia walked.
After the two advanced on a sac-bunt by Bas Timmer, Sabel scored the tying run on a grounder by Wesley Kamoen.
RCH reacted immediately by scoring twice in their fourth.
With one out, pitcher Djardan Graveth hit Jim Leijenaar with a pitch and gave up singles to Maarten Bos and Lex Leijenaar.
His brother Jim scored, but Bos was thrown out at third base, trying to advance. Lex, who advanced on the thrown to third, then scored when a throwing error was made on a grounder by Nick Heij.
In the fifth inning, RCH left a runner at second base and in the sixth, another stranded at third base.
De Hazenkamp got on base again in the sixth inning off new pitcher Marek Deska.
RCH's American pitcher with a Polish passport walked two batters in this inning, then saw the bases being loaded in the seventh.
Deska then wasn't supported by his defense, as the first two batters reached on two errors.
After the two moved on a sac-bunt, Deska loaded the bases with a walk, but then a strikeout and flyout ended the at bat and the game.
