NIJMEGEN (Neth.) - In the second game of the 20th Jan van de Vegte Memorial Tournament in Nijmegen, Mr. Cocker HCAW won 7-1 vs. MediaMonks RCH. The tournament opened with the game between host De Hazenkamp vs. Konica Minolta Pioniers and ended with the match-up between RCH and De Hazenkamp.
HCAW took a 2-0 lead with two outs in the second inning.
RCH-starter Jimmy van der Veldt (ex-Kinheim) then walked Ronald Jaarsma and then gave up back-to-back RBI-doubles to Juriën Overman and Adrian Anthony to give HCAW the lead.
HCAW increased the lead with a run in the third inning.
Ralph Milliard then led off with a double, advanced on a grounder and scored on a wild pitch.
With two outs, HCAW loaded the bases when Sidney Ensermo singled, newly arrived American Adam Sowell walked and Ronald Jaarsma reached on an error.
The inning then ended when Juriën Overman grounded out.
Trailing 3-0, RCH scored its first and only run in the fourth inning.
With one out, Robin Longhurst (also a former player of Corendon Kinheim) singled.
After Ferd van Stekelenburg (ex-Pirates) flied out, Longhurst scored on a double by Floris Morang. Longhurst scored just before Morang was tagged out at third base, trying to stretch his double into a triple.
By the way, both Van Stekelenburg and Morang also have a Kinheim-background.
In the fifth inning, new RCH-pitcher Joran Klarenbeek gave up singles to Sidney Ensermo and Adam Sowell, who last year played for Swedish champion Karlskoga Bats and was named Most Valuable Player of the Elitserien, the highest division in Sweden.
But then a force play-grounder and a strikeout followed.
HCAW rallied for four runs in the sixth inning to take a comfortable 7-1 lead.
Rookie Rick Pluijmers became RCH's third pitcher in the game and was greeted with a lead-off single by Adrian Anthony, who went 3-for-4.
After a groundout, the bases were loaded when Ralph Milliard walked and Jermaine Esprit singled.
Next, the four runs were scored on a single by Shurty Tremus, a sac-fly by Sidney Ensermo and singles by Randy Daal and Ronald Jaarsma.
RCH got two runners on base in the seventh inning with two outs off reliever Rutger Zwaal, but a force play-grounder ended the game.
