Neptunus wins milestone game
Nederlands
ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - DOOR Neptunus on Thursday-evening won its third game in a row of the young season, which opened last weekend. Playing at home, Neptunus handed Konica Minolta Pioniers a 4-2 loss in a game, which was moved upward in the schedule to make room later in the year when both teams participate in the European Cup Tournaments.

With the victory, Neptunus won a milestone game, as the club played its 1000th consecutive game on the highest level, becoming the first club to accomplish this. ADO, HCAW, Kinheim and Sparta-Feyenoord also played 1000 or more games in the Dutch big league, but none of them played them consecutively.

The game started with a surprise, as veteran Dè Flanegin, who currently is the Hitting Coach of Pioniers, returned into the starting line-up and played at first base. Flanegin retired after the 2008 season and didn't play last year, when he was in his first season as the team's Hitting Coach.

Facing Opening Day-starter and former teammate Jurjen van Zijl, Neptunus opened the score right away in the first at bat, scoring twice. Van Zijl walked lead-off hitter Eugène Kingsale, then gave up a single to Benjamin Dille and also walked Raily Legito to load the bases quickly. A wild pitch then accounted for the first run and after next batter Danny Rombley struckout, Dille scored the second run on a grounder by Jeffrey Arends, who tonight was the DH, with newcomer Marvin Bleij taking over at first base.

Australian-born Croatian Dushan Ruzic started for Neptunus after having had a relief-appearance last weekend. The righthander retired the first six batters in a row, then gave up hits to Jeffrey de Vrieze and Kevin Dirksen (in his first big league at bat), but a double play and strikeout followed.

Pioniers then came alongside in the fourth inning. Rushan then walked Michael Duursma and hit next batter Norbert Lokhorst with a pitch. The two advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Mark Duursma, followed by an RBI-grounder by Mervin Gario and a runscoring single by Dè Flanegin to tie the score.

Neptunus was silenced after the first inning as Van Zijl hurled three hitless innings hereafter, but then gave up two hits and a run in the fifth. Martijn Meeuwis led off with a single and stole second base, advanced on a sac-bunt by Shaldimar Daantji and scored on a single by Eugène Kingsale. Neptunus then added an insurance run in the sixth at bat. Raily Legito was hit by a pitch and stole second base, then moved on a grounder by Danny Rombley, which marked the end for Van Zijl. Venezuelan Nelson Miguel Santander Olajo took over and was greeted with an RBI-single by Jeffrey Arends, that made it 4-2.

Leon Boyd threw the eighth inning for Neptunus. With one out, he walked a batter, then gave up a single, but the inning ended when a flyout ended in a double play. Berry van Driel took over in the ninth, walked a batter with one out, but then struckout the next two batters to end the game and earn a save.
