Almere wins in 10th inning
Nederlands
UTRECHT (Neth.) - Almere Magpies scored three runs in the tenth inning vs. UVV on Saturday to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five Promotion/Relegation Play-Off. Almere was outhit 9-3 and was held hitless for 6 2/3 inning, then added two hits in the tenth.

Derek Tarapacki started for UVV and dominated for nine innings. In that span, the righthander struckout 14 batters, walked four and gave up only one basehit, before getting into problems in the tenth at bat. He then gave up a lead-off single to Jason Orman, who advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Churandy La Cruz. Next, Juriën Overman walked and Luigino Rosaria followed with the third Almere-hit in the game, which enabled Orman to score the go-ahead run and Overman to reach third base. The latter then scored the second run in the inning when Tarapacki made a throwing error to home on a comeback-grounder by Siegert Flaneur, which also led to Rosaria being able to score. It marked the end of Tarapacki, who was replaced by Sedley Karel, who ended the inning by striking out the next two batters.

In the home of the tenth inning, UVV got the bases loaded, but was unable to turn the 3-0 deficit around in its favor, failing even to score a single run. Jirka Bliek and Glenn Romney led off with singles, but then Fausto Álvarez Rizo hit an infield-fly. Next, pinch-hitter Mike Patist reached on a throwing error, which loaded the bases. But then flied out and Norbert Jongerius grounded out to end the game.

Almere didn't got any scoring opportunity in the regular nine innings. The team reached second base only once, which happened in the fifth inning. Juriën Overman then was hit by a pitch and stole second base, then was caught stealing trying to steal third base also. In the second, third, eighth and ninth inning, a batter walked, but neither of them got beyond first base.

From the third through seventh inning, Derek Tarapacki retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced, including six consecutive strikeouts, but then, with two outs in the seventh inning, his No-Hitter was broken when Jason Orman singled.

UVV was more productive of starter Sten van de Bedem, as it left two runners in the third bat bat. In the fifth, the Utrecht-team threatened to score again. With two outs, Jeff Delfina tripled, then next batter Maarten de Wilde walked, but a flyout ended the inning. In the sixth, two more runners stranded. Again with two outs, Jeroen Hermans and Jair Thompson singled, but both were left when a flyout followed. In the seventh and eighth inning, UVV reached base again with two outs. In the seventh, Maarten de Wilde doubled, which led to a pitching change. Ewout Bos took over and closed with a grounder. In the eighth, runners were left at first and third base. In the ninth, Bos walked a batter with one out and was relieved by Scott Ronnenbergh, who got the first batter he faced to hit into a double play. The lefthander then ended up to become the winning pitcher when his teammates scored three runs in the tenth inning.
