ROTTERDAM / AMSTERDAM (Neth.) -
On Thursday, April 7, the 2011 baseball season opens with the match-up between last years Holland Series-finalists DOOR Neptunus and L&D Amsterdam Pirates.
Neptunus won the Series and captured the championship title.
Thursday's game, the first of a 3-game series, will start at 7:45 PM at Neptunus Familiestadion in Rotterdam.
Game 2 follows next Saturday at Amsterdam, to be followed by Game 3 on Sunday at Rotterdam.
The three games are played before the official start of the season on Thursday, April 14.
In June, Neptunus and Amsterdam both are participating in the European Cup Tournament and to make room in the schedule, the two teams play their series in the upcoming days.
Head Coaches Jan Collins (Neptunus) and Charles Urbanus (Amsterdam) have both named their starters for the first two games, while the latter also announced his starter for Game 3.
On Tuesday-evening, Collins stated that he is not planning to use newly acquired lefthander Craig Anderson, who arrived in the Netherlands on Monday.
Collins wants to give Anderson some days to get accustomed to his new situation and the weather conditions.
Besides that, Anderson hasn't pitched since January, so he will use his first week to get back into his pitching rhythm.
Collins plans to use Anderson in the next series, starting on April 14.
Last season, Neptunus opened the season vs. Sparta-Feyenoord and won 3-2 in 10 innings, followed by a 7-1 win the next day.
Diegomar Markwell (no-decision) and Kevin Heijstek (winning pitcher) also opened the season for Neptunus in 2010.
Amsterdam Pirates opened the 2010 season with a 2-1 win at home vs. ADO, then won 9-3 a day later.
Jos de Jong then started the first game and Ben Grover the second game.
Both had a no-decision.
The last Opening Day-assignment for Rob Cordemans was in 2009 when he opened the season pitching for Sparta-Feyenoord vs. Hoofddorp Pioniers with a no-decision.
Cordemans missed last years Opening Day because of an injury.
