Olympia Haarlem lost depth
Nederlands
HAARLEM (Neth.) - Olympia Haarlem, which secured their spot in next years big league by winning the best-of-five Promotion/Relegation Play-Off vs. Gryphons, 3-1, has lost some experience after the completion of the season. Five players left the team, while two junior-players, who played in several games for the team during the season, also left. Three players were added to the roster for 2011, including a player who returned to the team.

Coming to Haarlem are Infielders Judith Diepeveen and Dinet Oosting, while Righthanded Pitcher/Infielder Lauren True is added from the club's Junior-team. Next season, Olympia plans to add two new foreign players, as the three players from abroad, who played for the team this season, all will not return.

Middle-infielder Judith Diepeveen made her big league-debut in 2005, playing in one game for DSC '74, then didn't play on the highest level a year later. In 2007, Judith became a regular player of DSC '74, playing in 34 games, hitting .238 and was second best by scoring 17 runs. A year later, she was second in the team of Olympia Haarlem (the new name of DSC after their merger with TYBB) with 19 basehits and hit the lone homerun of the team. Last year, she played in her first season for Sparks Haarlem and also was a member of the preliminary roster of the Dutch National Softball Team. This year, Judith played in 28 games for Sparks, hitting .311 (23-for-74) with 15 runs and 10 RBI's. Next year, she will make her comeback in the Olympia-team.

Dinet Oosting, who is a Catcher/3B, is coming from Tex Town Tigers, while it initially was rumored that she was going to play for Centrals. After having played for The Blokes in Veendam and Run '71 in Oldenzaal, Dinet this year made her debut in the Dutch big league, playing in 21 games for Tex Town Tigers. She hit .191 (9-for-47), scored five runs and had eight RBI's. She also played in the big league for the Dutch National Junior Team, appearing in 20 games, hitting .423 (22-for-52), scoring eight runs and having seven RBI's. Her 22 basehits and seven runs batted in led the junior-squad, with whom she also participated in the European Junior Championship this year in Vienna (Austria).

Lauren True, who will be one of the outfielders, this year played in the Junior-team of Olympia, but made her big league-debut during the 2008 season, playing in one game for the Haarlem-squad. The last three years, Lauren played in the Junior-team of the club, where she was one of the pitchers three years ago.

Infielder Rebecca Duindam and Outfielder Marisèla de Wind left the team after the season and both will play for Iber Lengua Terrasvogels in 2011.

Rebecca Duindam made her big league-debut in 2007, playing in two games for DSC '74, which was renamed Olympia Haarlem a year later. In 2008, she played in her first full season for the team, hitting .147 in 29 games. Last year, Olympia played in the First Division and then promoted back to the big league. This season, Rebecca played in the big league for two teams. She batted .186 (11-for-59) in 28 games for Olympia, scoring eight runs and having five RBI's, while hitting .200 in 12 games for the Dutch Juniors, which also participated in the big league as a team.

Just like Rebecca, Marisèla de Wind this season played in the big league for two teams. She played in all 32 regular season-games for Olympia Haarlem, hitting .261 (23-for-88) with three doubles, nine runs and eight RBI's, while hitting .188 in 20 games for the Dutch Juniors. Last year, she also was with Olympia when it played in the First Division after she had made her big league-debut the year before, playing in 27 games and hitting .122. Rebecca and Marisèla both participated with the Dutch Juniors in the European Championship in Vienna.

American Righthanded Pitcher/Infielder Courtney Lyons left the team during the season. After her departure, American Christie Hill, who joined the team during the season as an Infielder, took over the pitching-duties, but will not be back again next year. British National Team-Outfielder Karlene Headley-Cooper also is not coming back, as she returned to Canada. The three led the team this season in hitting.

Courtney Lyons first was with the club last year, but then was the short stop in the successful team that promoted and made some pitching appearances in the second team of Olympia, as she wasn't eligible to pitch in the main squad. For this year, she was added to the roster as the pitcher and made her big league-debut playing in 27 games, as she also was the second baseman. Courtney batted .288 (23-for-80), which was third best of the team, scored seven runs and had eight RBI's. As pitcher, she threw in 23 games and was 6-12, throwing in 120 innings in which she struckout 71, but also gave up 122 basehits and finished with a 3.50 ERA.

...Christie Hill...

Christie Hill has been a valuable player for the team in several seasons. In 2007, she first played for the team (then-called DSC '74) in the big league and then was the second best hitter with a .329 average, scored 17 runs and had eight RBI's. As pitcher, she was 12-9 and struckout 80 in 133 2/3 inning, while finishing with a 1.94 ERA. After having not played in the Netherlands in 2008, she returned last year when the team played in the First Division, but due to an injury, she missed several games, but despite that, the team returned to the big league after winning the Promotion/Relegation Play-Off. Because of the injury, Christie was unable to be as effective as before as a pitcher, so this year, she was the Short Stop. However, after Courtney Lyons left, Christie was activated again as a pitcher and threw some important games for the Haarlem-team during the Play-Downs. Offensively, Christie led the team with a .329 batting average (23-for-70), scored a team-leading 11 runs and had eight RBI's. As pitcher, she appeared in three regular season games and was 0-2, throwing in 14 2/3 inning with eight strikeouts.

Outfielder Karlene Headley-Cooper this year made her debut in the Dutch big league, playing in 30 games and finishing with a .313 batting average, which was second best of the team. Karlene was 26-for-83 and scored 10 runs, while leading the team with 11 RBI's and five triples. Her 26 basehits also were Olympia's best. With the British National Team, Karlene participated this year in the World Championship in Venezuela.

Junior-players Deion van der Voort and Eliza Rikkelman also left Olympia Haarlem.

Righthanded Pitcher Deion van der Voort played in 12 games for Olympia, her first in the Dutch big league, but didn't got an at bat. As pitcher, she threw in six games, all in relief and was 0-0.

In six innings, Deion struckout three batters, walked eight and gave up 12 basehits. Deion also played in the big league in one game for the Dutch Junior Team and was 0-1, throwing in two innings. Next season, Deion will play for DSS, which relegated this year and will play in the 'Overgangsklasse' next season.

Infielder Eliza Rikkelman last year played for First Divisionist Amsterdam Pirates before coming to Olympia Haarlem. She also made her big league-debut this season, playing in 17 games and hitting .130 (3-for-23), scoring three runs and having one RBI. Eliza also played in the one big league-game for the Dutch Junior Team and was 0-for-2. In 2011, Eliza will play for Centrals.

In 2011, American Caroline Powell returns to Haarlem for her second season as Head Coach of the team. Like this season, she will be assisted again by Inge Consent.
