Olympia Haarlem opens with two wins
Nederlands
HAARLEM (Neth.) - Olympia Haarlem on Saturday started the best-of-five Promotion/Relegation Play-Off with two victories vs. Gryphons, which finished in second place in the First Division. Olympia trailed in both games, but eventually won 5-4 and 6-1. The series continues next Saturday at Rosmalen. If needed, a fifth game will be played on Sunday at Haarlem.

Game One

When the home of the seventh inning started, Olympia trailed 4-3, but then came alongside and went on to win the game in the tie-break.

Back in the first inning, both teams scored once. Olympia-pitcher Christie Hill gave up a lead-off double to Monique Melissant, who then advanced on a grounder and scored on a bunt-single by Morgan Parkerson, but then a double play followed. In the home of the first, Rebecca Duindam singled with one out, then Lisanne van den Berg was hit by a pitch. Next, Karlene Headley-Cooper, who is a teammate of Parkerson in the National Team of Great Britain, doubled to tie the score, but here also a double play ended the at bat.

Gryphons re-took the lead in the third inning when Morgan Parkerson singled with one out and scored on a following double by Claudia Kranendonk. Olympia answered with two runs with two outs in its third at bat. Lisanne van den Berg (fielder's choice) and Karlene Headley-Cooper (single) then both scored on a double by Maranca Ham.

In the next three innings, both teams left some runners, but in the top of the seventh, Gryphons took the lead for the third time. With one out, Monique Melissant was hit by a pitch, then Yonina Sint Jago singled. After Olympia-coach Caroline Powell talked with pitcher Christie Hill, the bases got loaded when Morgan Parkerson also singled. Two runs were then scored when Claudia Kranendonk hit the third consecutive single. A force-out and groundout then ended the at bat, but Gryphons had taken a 4-3 lead.

In the home of the seventh, Olympia came alongside with two outs. With one out, Christie Hill singled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Rebecca Duindam. She then scored when Lisanne van den Berg singled. Karlene Headley-Cooper followed with another single, but then a groundout followed, meaning the game went into extra innings.

In the eighth inning, Gryphons left a runner, but in the home part, Olympia scored the winning run. Pinch-runner Lauren True was Olympia's tie-break runner, who then advanced on a sac-bunt by Marisèla de Wind. Next batter Rosanne de Vries grounded out, but then Laura Burggraaf singled to bring in the winning run. Olympia had a narrow escape and won 5-4.

Game Two

In the next game, Gryphons again took the lead in the first inning. Yonina Sint Jago singled with one out, then advanced to third base on a 2-out single by Claudia Kranendonk and scored on a single by Illiandra Figaroa. But was to be all in this game for Gryphons, which outhit Olympia 9-6.

After leaving a runner in the first inning, Olympia scored twice in the second at bat. With two outs, Rosanne de Vries doubled and Laura Burggraaf walked, then Marit Molenaar singled in a run, while Burggraaf also scored when a throwing error followed.

In the third, Olympia added three more runs when Gryphons committed two errors. Rebecca Duindam reached on an error, then was able to score all the way from first base when a throwing error was made on a sac-bunt by Lisanne van den Berg, who herself ended up on second base. Karlene Headley-Cooper followed with a triple to bring in the next run, the later scored on a wild pitch.

Olympia scored another run in the fifth inning when Lisanne van den Berg singled and went on to score on a single by Marisèla de Wind.
