Mariners replace Manager Wakamatsu
Nederlands
SEATTLE, Washington (USA) - The Seattle Marines have replaced its Manager Don Wakamatsu on Monday-morning. Also dismissed were Bench Coach Ty Van Burkleo, Pitching Coach Rick Adair and Performance Coach Steve Hecht. The Mariners named Daren Brown as interim manager. Brown was the Manager of its Triple-A team Tacoma.

In a press release, Mariners General Manager Jack Zduriencik stated that ''these changes needed to be made now and that they are in the best interest of the Mariners. Don, Ty and Rick are all good baseball men, and they have done their very best. But we are where we are. I no longer have confidence that Don, Ty and Rick are the right long-term fit for our organization. New leadership is needed, and it is needed now''.

Last season, Wakamatsu made his debut as Major League-manager and led the Mariners to an 85-77 record and third place in the American League West. Currently, the Mariners are 42-70, as the team's defense and hitting are below expectations. Earlier this season, Hitting Coach Alan Cockrell was fired and outfielder Ken Griffey, Jr. retired.

Roger Hansen, the club's Minor League catching coordinator, takes over as the Bench Coach and Carl Willis, the Mariners' Minor League pitching coordinator, becomes the new Pitching Coach.
