Neptunus scores early to win second gama against DSS/Kinheim
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus took an early 3-0 lead on Saturday (April 8) en route to a 6-1 win against DSS/Kinheim. In the opener on Friday, Neptunus was kept scoreless and hitless in the first five innings, but won 7-0.

Last season, Neptunus had several games in which it decided the outcome late, scoring most of its runs from the sixth inning on. Today, Neptunus scored once in the second inning and added two runs in the third at bat.

The Rotterdam-team collected twelve basehits, including three by Dwayne Kemp and Sheadion Jamanika. The latter also batted in three runs.

Another Kemp also led the offense of DSS/Kinheim, as Dwayne's brother Urving Kemp accounted for the lone two basehits of the Haarlem-team.

Before the start of the game, there was an Opening Day-ceremony. The ceremonial first pitch was thrown by DSS/Kinheim's former Head Coach Michael Crouwel, who retired after last season.

On Friday-evening, it wasn't until the sixth inning that Neptunus recorded its first basehit and first run off of the DSS/Kinheim-pitching. Today, the team collected its first basehit in the first at bat and opened the score in the second inning.

In the top of the first inning, Roger Bernadina singled for Neptunus with one out off of starter Martijn Schoenderwoerd. But 'The Shark' was caught stealing moments later.

Neptunus scored its first run in the second inning. The team got the bases loaded with two outs, but scored only once. Not on a basehit, but a walk. Dwayne Kemp led off with a single. With one out, he moved to second base on a grounder by Christian Diaz. With two outs, Kemp advanced to the next base on an infield-hit by Sheadion Jamanika. The bases then got loaded when next batter Louie-Jay Sienders was awarded first base on catcher's interference. Hereafter, the first run was scored when Rayshelon Carolina walked. But then three runners were left behind when a foul pop-fly by Stijn van der Meer ended the inning.

Neptunus added two runs in the top of the third, again with two outs. With one out, John Polonius walked and advanced on a grounder by Dwayne Kemp. With two outs, Polonius scored on a single by Arthur Bonevacia. Hereafter, Christian Diaz walked and Sheadion Jamanika singled. Bonevacia scored on Jamanika's basehit and Diaz advanced to third base. However, Jamanika ran way too far over first base while the ball was thrown back to the infield and came into a rundown. At that moment, Diaz tried to score, but the ball was then thrown to the catcher and he was eliminated at the plate, which ended the inning.

Neptunus-starter Shairon Martis retired the first nine batters he faced (three strikeouts). But the righthander then gave up a run in the fourth, which would remain the lone one for DSS/Kinheim. Nick Hofer led off with a walk and with one out, he stole second base. In a following hit-and-run-situation, Hofer ran towards third base, while Sem Kuijper grounded towards third. There, third baseman Stijn van der Meer fielded the ball, opted to tag out Hofer, but missed and dropped the ball and everyone was safe on the error. With two outs, Hofer scored in a double steal-situation. With Kuijper on second base, next batter Koen Halderman walked, but the two runners were left behind.

Neptunus got the run back in the top of the fifth. Roger Bernadina led off with a double and moved on a wild pitch. John Polonius then walked, but he was forced out on a following grounder by Dwayne Kemp, but that also enabled Bernadina to score.

Neptunus got another scoring-opportunity in the sixth inning off off new pitcher Finn Blokker. He walked lead-off hitter Sheadion Jamanika, but struckout Louie-Jay Sienders. With one out, Rayshelon Carolina doubled. But with two runners in scoring position, Stijn van der Meer hit a pop-fly and Blokker closed by striking out Roger Bernadina.

Sienders was the catcher of Neptunus today after Enrique Hatma (who didn't play today) had been the catcher in the opener on Friday-evening. In the past seasons, Sienders mostly was the bullpen-catcher and back-up catcher of Neptunus. Hatma was added recently to the team. The two share the catching-duties, as regular catcher Dashenko Ricardo is not with the team at the moment. The team has two more catchers on its roster, but Dave Janssen is currently playing at college in the USA and Keegan Pieternella is with the club's second team, Tridents.

Neptunus also left two runners behind in the seventh inning and another runner on second base in the eighth. But in the ninth inning, two more runs were added off off closer Robyn Clara. With one out, Dwayne Kemp singled. During his at bat, Kemp twisted his right-ankle somewhat while hiting a foul ball. When he also fouled off the next pitch, Kemp stepped out, felt his leg and stretched somewhat. On the next delivery, the veteran player hit the ball into leftfield for a single, but then hobbled down the line towards first base. After arriving there, he was replaced by pinch-runner Dre Celestijn. With two outs, Christian Diaz also singled. The two advanced on a passed ball, then both scored when Sheadion Jamanika followed with a single into rightfield. And that lifted the lead to 6-1. While throwing the ball to the plate, it was rightfielder Urving Kemp, who appeared to sustain an injury. He felt his left leg, hobble somewhat and sat down on the field. But while being attended, it appeared to be a cramp and he was able to continue the game. Shortly thereafter, the inning ended when Louie-Jay Sienders flied out.

After having scored in the fourth inning, DSS/Kinheim got into scoring position again in the sixth. With one out, Jochem Koedijk walked and with two outs, Urving Kemp singled, but a strikeout ended the at bat.

The home-team again got two baserunners in the seventh off of new pitcher Aaron de Groot. With two outs and Marcel Tolenaars (fielder's choice) at first base, Amarensio Franka walked. Again, a strikeout ended the inning.

In the eighth inning, it was new pitcher Mike Groen, who got a runner on second base. With two outs, Urving Kemp singled and stole second base, but then was left behind.

With Neptunus leading 6-1, veteran lefthander Diegomar Markwell took the mound. Since last season, Markwell is the Pitching Coach of Neptunus. He played in his last full season in 2021, but made three relief appearances last year. Today, in his first appearance of this season, the lefthander retired the side, including one strikeout, to end the game.
