Didi Gregorius signs Minor League-contract with Seattle Mariners
Nederlands

SEATTLE, Washington (USA) - Didi Gregorius has signed a Minor League-contract with Seattle Mariners, which was reported on Thursday (June 8) by several sources. The deal has not yet been officially confirmed. The 33-year old Gregorius, born in Amsterdam (Netherlands), almost surely will report to Seattle's Triple-A team Tacoma Rainiers.

Last year, Gregoriius played in the Major League for Philadelphia Phillies, but he was released on August 4. In November, he signed with Cangrejeros de Santurce and played in the professional Winter League in Puerto Rico.

On May 1 of this year, the short stop signed with Algodoneros de Unión Laguna, which plays in the Mexican League. There, Gregorius played in 26 games and batted .359 with 37 basehits, including 11 homeruns, eight doubles and one triple. He batted in 34 runs. And with that, he not only was elected to play in the All Star Game of the League, but also attracted attention (again) from some teams.

Gregorius made his debut in the Major League in 2012 playing in eight games for Cincinnati Reds. He then played for Arizona Diamondbacks in 2013 and 2014. Thereafter, Gregorius took over the short stop-position from Derek Jeter at New York Yankees. There, he played in five seasons, broke some short stop-(team)records and became a popular player. After the 2019 season, Gregorius was a Free Agent and then signed with Philadelphia Phillies for whom he played since 2020.

In 1,077 Major League-games, Gregorius recorded 999 basehits, including 134 homeruns. As he now has signed a Minor League-contract, Gregorius has a chance to collect his 1,000th Major League-basehit. Of course, to do so, he has to be added to the Major League-team of Seattle.

In March, Gregorius played for the Netherlands Team in the World Baseball Classic.
