Nederlands

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus opened its second 3-game series of the 2023 season with an 11-0 shutout-victory in 6½ inning against RCH Memorie Sieraden.

In the Opening Series a week ago, Neptunus swept DSS/Kinheim. RCH-Pinguïns won twice against UVV. The third game rained out three times and now will be played coming Tuesday-evening (April 18).

In tonight's game, Neptunus collected eleven basehits, including three by Christian Diaz, who also scored twice and batted in two runs.

In tonight's game, Neptunus led 3-0 when it took a decisive lead via a 7-run rally in the fourth inning.

Neptunus opened the score in the bottom of the first inning off of starter T'sean Martina. The righthander walked lead-off hitter Stijn van der Meer, who moved into scoring-position when next batter Roger Bernadina flied out. With two outs, he scored on a single by Dwayne Kemp.

The home-team added two runs in the second at bat on three consecutive basehits. Christian Diaz led off with a single and Sheadion Jamanika followed with a double. Both scored when next batter Enrique Hatma also doubled.

After a scoreless third inning, Neptunus rallied for seven runs to take a commanding 10-0 lead. Christian Diaz again led off with a single and this time, next batter Sheadion Jamanika walked. The two advanced on a flyout, then Diaz scored on a single by Rayshelon Carolina. The productive hitting continued, as Stijn van der Meer added an RBI-double and Roger Bernadina contributed with a 2-run single. On Bernadina's single into centerfield (with runners on second and third base), centerfielder Koen Werkman sustained an injury to his right leg while trying to catch the ball. Werkman was unable to continue, but could leave the field on his own power. Second baseman Raul Jacobs took over in centerfield, while Daan Groenewoud replaced Werkman and became the new second baseman. After a 3-minute delay, the game and also the hitting and scoring contiued. With Bernadina at first base, John Polonius doubled, then the first scored when Dwayne Kemp reached on an error. With two outs, Christian Diaz delivered a 2-run single in his second at bat in this inning. A pitching change followed and Mike van den Berg took over and got an inning-ending grounder.

Neptunus-starter Tom de Blok had a good outing and got only one runner in scoring-position. The righthander struckout ten batters, his highest total since striking out fourteen on May 27, 2021 against DSS/Kinheim when he pitched for Amsterdam Pirates.

In the Opening Series, the righthander gave up three basehits in his first inning back on the mound in a regular season-game since June 2021. Tonight, he gave up one single and struckout three batters in the first inning. De Blok gave up a lead-off infield-hit to Raul Jacobs, who stole second base moments later. After having struckout the next two batters, De Blok walked Aldich Guzman, but closed with another strikeout. Jacobs would remain the lone runner in scoring-position for RCH-Pinguïns.

De Blok retired the side in the second (two strikeouts) and third inning. In the top of the fourth, he again struckout three batters and also gave up a 2-out single to Denzel Brooks, who stranded on first base. He added two more strikeouts in the fifth and went on to become the winning pitcher.

Neptunus added an 'insurance run' for the 10-run difference in the bottom of the fifth. With Enrique Hatma (single) on third base and Rayshelon Carolina (error) on first base, Stijn van der Meer grounded into a double play, but Hatma scored to make it an 11-0 score.

Ryan Huntington took over the Neptunus-pitching in the top of the sixth and was supported with a double play. In the seventh, Mike Groen closed the game for Neptunus and retired the side.
