Nederlands

ST. LOUIS, Missouri (USA) - Dutch pitcher Sem Robberse was added to the 40-man Major League-roster of St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday (November 14). Teams have until 6 PM on Wednesday (midnight Dutch time) to finalize their 40-man rosters and protect players from he so-called Rule 5 Draft, which is held on December 6. Unprotected players could become eligible for other clubs.

In this rule, players signed at age 18 or younger need to be added to their club's 40-Man roster within five seasons or they become eligible for the Rule 5 Draft. Players who signed at age 19 or older need to be protected within four seasons.

On July 30, Robberse was part of a trade between Toronto Blue Jays and St. Louis. At the moment of his trade, the righthander was listed as the number 7 prospect in the Toronto-organization and was seen as someone who can pitch in the Major League in the future. Before being traded, Robberse pitched for New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the Double-A team of the Blue Jays. In 18 games (all starts), he was 3-5 with 86 strikeouts in 88 2/3 inning with a 4.06 ERA, while walking only 33 batters.

In the remainder of the season, Robberse pitched for Memphis Redbirds, the Triple-A team of St. Louis. He threw in eight games (seven starts) and was 2-1 with a 4.84 ERA. In 35 1/3 inning, Robberse struckout 44 batters, walked 24 and gave up 39 basehits.

In July, Robberse was selected to pitch in the Futures All-Star Game in Seattle.

Before the start of this year's season, Robberse was a non-roster player on the Blue Jays Major League-roster during Spring Training. The righthander appeared in three games (one as a starter) for the Major League-team and was 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA and four stikeouts in six innings pitched.

Sem Robberse, who turned 22 last month, started his career with Red Caps in Leusden, made his debut in the Dutch big league during the 2018 season when he pitched in six games (three starts) for HCAW. He was 1-3 with an 1.80 ERA and struckout twelve batters in twenty innings on the mound for the Bussum-team. In the 2019 season, Robberse pitched in nine games (all starts) for Quick Amersfoort and was 6-3 with an 1.83 ERA and 62 strikeouts. He then signed with Toronto Blue Jays in July of that year and made his professional debut shortly thereafter. Sem's brother Mees Robberse this season played in the Dutch big league for DSS/Kinheim.

As mentioned, Robberse signed a professional contract with Toronto in July 2019. Later that year, he made his professional debut, pitching in five games in the Rookie League-team of Toronto. In his four professional seasons (there was no Minor League-season in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), Robberse is 16-20 in 74 games (69 starts) with 326 strikeouts in 334 1/3 inning pitched.
