Quick Amersfoort nips UVV thanks to rally in 8th inning
Nederlands

VLEUTEN (Neth.) - Quick Amersfoort also won its second game of its series against UVV. On Saturday (April 15), the team trailed 9-8 after seven innings, then rallied for four runs in the eighth en route to a 12-11 victory in a game that lasted more than 3½ hours. On Thursday-evening, Quick Amersfoort opened the 3-game series with a 14-6 victory.

Quick Amersfoort collected seventeen basehits in today's game, including three by Jurian Hansen and Ibrahin Redan. The latter also batted in three runs, as did Pascal Zegwaard.

UVV recorded eleven basehits, including three by rookie Malcolm Marlin. Jorge Luis Espinal Ventura batted in four runs. However, defensively, UVV committed eight errors.

Although UVV already played its first home-game a week ago, the team officially opened the season today with an Opening Day-ceremony, as both the baseball- and women's softball-team of the club played at home. With today's ceremony, UVV celebrated the comeback of both teams to the highest league. The baseball-team last played in the Dutch big league in 2017, the softball-team in 2014.

During the pre-game ceremony, former Netherlands Soccer Team-goalkeeper Hans van Breukelen threw the ceremonial first pitch. Van Breukelen played in 73 games for the National Soccer Team and won the European title with the team in 1988.

Before the first game of the softball double-header, Netherlands Softball Team-Head Coach Ferenc Jongejan threw the fist pitch. Some years ago, Jongejan has been both a player and coach off the baseball-team of UVV.

This was a game not only with 23 runs, but also 28 basehits and eleven errors. The line score went back-and-forth, as Quick Amersfoort had the lead four times and UVV three times. In the end, Quick struck with four runs in the eighth inning to take a decisive lead. It also was a game in which both teams wore red shirts. The difference was that UVV wore white trousers and Quick grey.

So, a long game deserves a long recap, right?

Quick Amersfoort opened the score with two runs in the top of the first inning off of starter Jurjen van Zijl. The veteran righthander gave up a lead-off single to Amar van Zwieten, who was able to advance to third base when next batter Joshbert José Ponte Manganiello reached on a throwing error by Van Zijl. That was the first of four errors in this at bat. Moments later, Ponte appeared to be caught stealing, but when an error was made, he not only reached second base safely, Van Zwieten also was able to score. Ponte later scored the second run on an one-out single by Ibrahin Redan. With two outs, Quick got the bases loaded when both Irving Redan and Kai Berkel both reached on errors, but a grounder ended the at bat.

Quick's 2-0 lead was shortlived, as UVV came alongside immediately off of starter Brian van Laar. Both runs were scored on a passed ball. Malcom Marlin led off with a double, advanced on a grounder, then scored on the first passed ball. Hereafter, Quin Cotton walked, stole second base, advanced on a grounder and scored on the second passed ball.

Quick re-took the lead in the top of the second inning. With one out, Amar van Zwieten reached on an error. He stole second base with two outs, then scored on a single by Pascal Zegwaard.

Quick added another run in the third. Marvin Jakobus led off with a double and Irving Redan walked. An error on a grounder by Kai Berkel then enabled Jakobus to score and lifted the lead to 4-2. With runners on first and second base and still no outs, the runners moved on a sacrifice bunt by Jordy Burger, but they were left behind.

In the bottom of the third inning, UVV came back again and tied the score for the second time. Jeret Adair led off with a single and Quin Cotton walked. After the two had advanced on a wild pitch, a grounder by Jorge Luis Espinal Ventura led to the first run. A following error on a hit by J'mar Calliste then enabled Cotton to score the tying run.

In the bottom of the fourth, UVV took the lead for the first time. With one out, Timothy Rojas singled and Malcolm Marlin doubled. Moments later, Rojas scored on a passed ball during the at bat of Jeret Adair to put UVV ahead, 5-4. Shortly thereafter, Adair struckout and a pitching-change followed. Joel Martis took over, walked the next batter, but then got an inning-ending grounder.

This lead also was shortlived, as Quick reacted with two runs with two outs in the top of the fifth to take the lead for the third time. With one out, Kai Berkel singled and moved into scoring-position on a grounder by Jordy Burger. With an 1-2 count on pinch-hitter Lars Visser, pitcher Jurjen van Zijl threw the ball in front of catcher Etienne van Tielraden. Berkel advanced and while the ball went to the backstop, Van Tielraden pointed to Visser, suggesting he had made a swing, which would make it the third strike. However, as first base not occupied, a throw would have been necessary to complete the out. Visser stepped out of the batter's box, took a practice swing, then realized it might be called a strike and took off towards first base. Van Zijl then pointed to Van Tielraden to go after the ball and when he did so, not only had Visser reached first base, but Berkel had continued running and scored the tying run on what was ruled a passed ball. UVV's Head Coach Frank Koene came out to asked some questions to Home Plate Umpire Paul Timmermans, but he already signaled to Visser to come back in the batter's box as there was no strike-call, meaning the count was 2-2. When Visser came back, it was Quick's 3B Coach Eugene Arrindell who asked an explanation from Timmermans. The talks weren't over yet. After Arrindell returned to his coaching box, Koene came back out again and pointed to the plate. A discussion between the three umpires followed. When that was over, the situation was confirmed and the batter had a 2-2 count and the game continued. Two pitches later, Visser singled. Amar van Zwieten then walked and Jurian Hansen followed with a single towards deep short. There, short stop Malcolm Marlin made a diving stop and threw the ball to first baseman J'mar Calliste, but Hansen reached safely on an infield-hit. In the meantime, Visser continued running towards the plate. Calliste threw the ball to catcher Van Tielraden, but Visser slid in and in a close play, he touched the plate before being tagged. That put Quick ahead, 6-5. Hereafter, Quick got runners on second and third base via a passed ball, but they were left behind.

In the top of the sixth, Quick got into scoring-position again. With one out, Marvin Jakobus singled, which led to a pitching-change. Sam van der Meer took over, but he was greeted with a single by Irving Redan. Two grounders followed and the runners stranded on second and third base. The last grounder was hit by Jordy Burger, who appeared to sustain an injury to his left leg while arriving at first base. He left the game and was replaced by Emeron Lourens, who was not on the Opening Day-roster of Quick, as it was reported that he only would play softball this season. But Lourens was added just before this 3-game series. By the way, Burger's sister Melissa Burger today played at the same site in her Opening Day-games with the softball-team of UVV.

In the bottom of the sixth, it was UVV that scored again and took the lead for the second time by adding three runs. Timothy Rojas and Malcolm Marlin walked and advanced on a grounder by Jaret Adair. With two outs, Jorge Luis Espinal Ventura hit a hard liner towards third baseman Marvin Jakobus, who was ready to field the ball. However, the ball jumped away from him towards his left over short stop Jurian Hansen, who just missed catchng the ball, which ended up in centerfield, just behind the infield. Second baseman Kai Berkel and centerfielder Amar van Zwieten ran towards the ball, which was the picked up by leftfielder Pascal Zegwaard. He threw the ball to first baseman Ibrahin Redan, who had raced to second base behind Espinal, but he arrived there first. In the meantime, both Rojas and Marlin scored to put UVV ahead, 7-6. Hereafter, Espinal also scored himself when a grounder by J'mar Calliste ended in a throwing error.

This time, it was Quick that came alongside by scoring twice in the top of the seventh. Both were unearned, as the UVV-defense committed its seventh and eighth defensive error in the game. Lead-off hitter Lars Visser reached on an error and with one out Jurian Hansen singled. Visser then scored when a force play-grounder by Pascal Zegwaard ended in a throwing error. Moments later, Hansen scored the tying run on a grounder by Ibrahin Redan.

In the bottom of the seventh, UVV took the lead for the third time by scoring a run. Lucas Bekker led off with a walk, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Etienne van Tielraden and a grounder by Timothy Rojas, then scored on a single by Malcolm Marlin, which put UVV ahead, 9-8.

Again, this lead also was shortlived. This time, Quick rallied for four runs in the top of the eighth and that proved to be decisive. All runs were scored with two outs off of reliever Sam van der Meer. He gave up a lead-off single to Irving Redan, then an one-out single to Emeron Lourens. With two outs, Van der Meer got the bases loaded when he walked Amar van Zwieten. Redan then scored the tying run on an infield-hit by Jurian Hansen and Pascal Zegwaard followed with a 2-run single to put Quick ahead, 11-9. Hereafter, Hansen scored the next run on a double by Ibrahin Redan. Zegwaard also tried to score, but he was eliminated at the plate, which ended the at bat.

UVV got one run back in the bottom of the eighth off of new pitcher Deef van Leersum, which also was an unearned run. Lead-off hitter Quin Cotton reached on an error and moved on a grounder and a wild pitch. After J'mar Calliste had walked, Cotton scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Aaron Isenia. Next batter Lucas Bekker singled, but two runners were left behind.

UVV narrowed the deficit to 12-11 in the bottom of the ninth off of closer Jasper Popken. With two outs, he gave up a single to Jeret Adair and walked Quin Cotton. Hereafter, Jorge Luis Espinal Ventura hit the ball into centerfield for a single, which brought in Adair. Cotton also tried to score, but he was eliminated at the plate.

And that also ended the game after three hours and 36 minutes!
