Twins Oosterhout also decides second game vs. Hoofddorp Pioniers late
Nederlands

OOSTERHOUT (Neth.) - Twins Oosterhout opened its home-season of the 2023 season on Saturday (April 15) with a 7-4 victory against Hoofddorp Pioniers. The opener of the 3-game series in Hoofddorp rained out on Thursday-evening, but was made up on Friday-evening. Twins then came-from-behind and scored three runs in the ninth to win 5-3.

Today, Twins Oosterhout initially trailed 3-0 halfway the first inning, but came back and led 5-3 after five innings. Pioniers narrowed the deficit to 5-4, then Twins again decided the game late, scoring two insurance runs in the seventh inning.

There were not many basehits in today's game. Twins collected five, including two by Luuk Bun and Thijmen Peters. Pioniers recorded four basehits, two of them by Miquel Willem.

As this was the first home-game for Twins Oosterhout, there was an Opening Day-ceremony before the game. The players and coaches were introduced and the ceremonial first pitch was thrown by the youngest baseball-member of the club from Oosterhout.

There also were emotions and sad feelings, as there was a moment of silence in remembrance of Henny de Hoogh, who unexpectedly passed away last Monday, April 10 at age 74. It was reported that he suffered a stroke a few days earlier.

Henny de Hoogh has been active for the club from Oosterhout for many years. In the past few seasons, Henny had been the Public Address Announcer of the home-games of Twins in the Dutch big league. In the scorebox, he was regularly joined by Piet van Gool as the Scoreboard Operator. Before that, Henny formed a team with Frans Vuister for several years. Frans was the longtime PA Announcer, while Henny handled the scoreboard, as did Piet van Gool. And when Frans was unable to be at a game, it was Henny who then filled in and did the announcing.

In the past seasons, Henny also has been the Announcer during the home-games of the club's second baseball-team in the First Division. When Frans Vuister retired from doing the announcing at the games of the main-squad, Henny took over the microphone and at the same time, he regularly also handled the scoreboard. Although he sometimes talked of retiring himself, Henny de Hoogh was to be back as Announcer again this season and would be behind the microphone today. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

The webmaster of Grand Slam * Stats & News offers his condolences to the family and friends of Henny and wishes them a lot of strength.

In today's game, Hoofddorp Pioniers struck early by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. However, Twins Oosterhout answered with two runs, came alongside in the fourth and took over the lead in the fifth. Twins collected only five basehits, but the three Pioniers-pitchers also issued twelve walks.

In the first inning, the first five Pioniers-batters reached base off of starter Raf Cocu. The team scored three runs without recording a basehit. The righthander walked the first three batters he faced, Bodhi de Vreede, Terrance Heemskerk and Duncan Beljaards. Oddly enough, none of them advanced on the walks. De Vreede moved to second base on a wild pitch before Heemskerk walked. And they then advanced on a passed ball before the walk issued to Beljaards. With the bases loaded, De Vreede scored on a force play-grounder by Daan Terstall, which led to the elimination of Beljaards at second base. Next, the bases got loaded again when Michael Dumitrescu also walked. A grounder by Vincent Mevissen then led to the next two runs. On Mevissen's grounder, Heemskerk scored and the other two runners of course also advanced. But when a throwing error towards the plate followed, Terstall also was able to score. With a runner now at third base, Thom Hoogkamer followed with a line drive, but that was caught by second baseman Thijmen Peters.

Twins Oosterhout answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning off of rookie Maarten Smit. The lefthander walked lead-off hitter Marnix Ruben. With one out, he also walked Yurdion Martie and got the bases loaded when Luuk Bun singled. A passed ball then enabled Ruben to score the first run, while the others also advanced. Moments later, the bases were re-loaded via an infield-hit by Terrence Garcia, which kept the other two runners at second and third base. Another walk followed, this time for Luuk Visser, and that brought in the second run. But with the bases still loaded, the at bat ended when Thijmen Peters grounded into a double play.

And so, there were five runs in the first inning on only two basehits. There also were seven walks, two passed balls, a wild pitch and an error.

With one out in the top of the third inning, Pioniers got into scoring-position again. Lead-off hitter Terrance Heemskerk reached on an error, then stole second base with one out. After a flyout accounted for the second out, Heemskerk tried to advance on a throwing error by Raf Cocu during a pick-off attempt. However, centerfielder Marnix Ruben got the ball in time to third baseman Railison Bentura, who then tagged out Heemskerk, which ended the at bat.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Twins Oosterhout came alongside, but also left three runners behind. With one out, the team got the bases loaded via Luuk Visser (walk), Thijmen Peters (single) and Onne van Gool (walk). Moments later, Visser scored the tying run while Van Gool was forced out on a grounder by his cousin Jerzy van Gool. The bases then got loaded again when Marnix Ruben walked, which led to a pitching change. Sem Nijman took over and closed the at bat by striking out Railison Bentura. And so, three runners were left behind.

Twins then broke the 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth by scoring two runs with two outs. Yurdion Martie led off with a walk and Luuk Bun followed with a ground-rule double. With two outs, both scored on a single by Thijmen Peters. He stole second base, but was left behind, as Sem Nijman again closed with a strikeout, this time for Onne van Gool. But Twins had taken a 5-3 lead.

Pioniers got one run back in the top of the sixth. With one out, Daan Terstall walked and Michael Dumitrescu singled. When the latter was forced out on a grounder by Vincent Mevissen, Terstall advanced to third base. He then scored on a following single by Thom Hoogkamer. That led to a pitching-change for Twins. With runners on first and second base, Jan van den Hurk took over and closed by striking out rookie Max Vonk. For Van den Hurk, this was his first appearance in the main-squad since pitching in relief on May 29, 2021.

With Twins leading 5-4 in the top of the seventh, Pioniers came close to the tying run. Lead-off hitter Miquel Willem reached second base on an error, then moved to third base on a grounder by Terrance Heemskerk. But he stranded there, as a grounder ended thet at bat.

In the bottom of the seventh, Twins added two insurance runs to take a decisive lead. Yurdion Martie and Luuk Bun opened with walks and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Terrence Garcia. He is one of the pitchers of Twins, but today, he was the designated hitter. With runners on second and third base, Twins got the bases loaded when pinch-hitter Gijs van Zalingen walked. A run was then scored when next batter Thijmen Peters was hit by a pitch. A pitching change followed. Daan Kuit took over from Sem Nijman and he faced pinch-hitter Berend Ruben, who also is the Bench Coach of Twins. Ruben grounded the ball towards third base, which could have ended in a double play. Bun was first forced out at the plate, but in an attempt to complete the double play at first base, a throwing error followed and Van Zalingen was able to score. Twins got the bases loaded again when Jerzy van Gool was hit by a pitch. The three runners were left behind, but Twins had lifted its lead to 7-4.

In the remaining two innings, Pioniers got only two more baserunners off of reliever Jan van den Hurk. Both stranded at first base.
