Amsterdam Pirates opens vs. Twins Oosterhout with convincing shutout
Nederlands

OOSTERHOUT (Neth.) - Amsterdam Pirates opened the 3-game series against Twins Oosterhout on Thursday-evening (April 20) with a comfortable 11-0 shutout-victory. Pirates led 5-0 after six innings, then added six more runs in the final three at bats.

Pirates collected twelve basehits, which included the team's first homerun of the season, hit by Denzel Richardson, who batted in three runs. Jorrit Penseel had three basehits. Except for Jules Cremer, all starting players had at least one basehit.

It was a historic night in Dutch baseball, as for the first time ever in the highest division, two No-Hitters were thrown on the same day and both games had a special ending.
At Bussum, Lars Huijer threw a 7-inning No-Hitter for HCAW in a 10-0 win against Quick Amersfoort. HCAW led only 4-0 after six innings, then rallied for six runs in the seventh to end the game via the mercy-rule.
At Heemstede, three pitchers threw a combined No-Hitter for DSS/Kinheim against RCH Memorie Sieraden. This game also had an ending via a special rule, as it ended after eight complete innings due to the 10:30 PM curfew-rule. DSS/Kinheim won 12-4 with RCH scoring its four runs without recording a basehit.

Amsterdam Pirates took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, took some more distance from the third inning on, but added six runs in the final three at bats of the game.

Pirates opened the score with one out in the top of the first inning off of starter Terrence Garcia. He started instead of the announced Koen Postelmans, who experienced some soreness while warming up and was scratched from his start. With one out, Garcia gave up a single to Duco Nuijten and then a homerun to Denzel Richardson, who last season led the league in homeruns (8) and runs batted in (39) and was named Most Valuable Player. Garcia recovered and followed with a strikeout, but the lefthander then gave up a double to Kenny Berkenbosch. But he stranded on second base.

With two outs in the second inning, Pirates got another runner in scoring position. Jason Jakobus then singled and was awarded second base on a balk, but Garcia closed with a strikeout.

The team from the Dutch capital doubled its lead in the third at bat. Lead-off hitter Duco Nuijten was hit by a pitch and with one out, Pirates got the bases loaded when Alex Madera and Kenny Berkenbosch both walked. With Oliver van der Wijst Severino in the batter's box, Terrence Garcia attempted a pick-off at second base, but a throwing error followed. That enabled Nuijten to score and moved Madera to third base. After Garcia had struckout Van der Wijst, he uncorked a wild pitch, which moved Berkenbosch to second base, then the bases got loaded when Jules Cremer walked. Jorrit Penseel followed with a single, which brought Madera across the plate. Berkenbosch also tried to score, but he was eliminated at the plate on a throw from leftfielder Luuk Bun to catcher Yurdion Martie, which ended the at bat.

From the fifth inning on, Pirates faced new pitcher Jeffrey Levenstone. The team left a runner behind on first base, but added another run in the sixth inning. Jorrit Penseel then led off with a single, then moved into scoring position on an errant throw by catcher Yurdion Martie during a pick-off attempt. Next batter Jason Jakobus walked and the two runners advanced via a sacrifice bunt by Roelie Henrique. Moments later, Penseel scored the fifth Amsterdam-run on a grounder by Duco Nuijten. Twins Oosterhout got only two runners in scoring position in its first six at bats off of starter Sven van de Sanden. With two outs in the first inning, the righthander gave up singles to Yurdion Martie and Luuk Bun, but a grounder followed.

In the third inning, Jerzy van Gool led off for Twins with a single, but he was caught stealing shortly thereafter. Van de Sanden retired the side in the second, fourth and fifth inning.

After having retired nine batters in a row, Van de Sanden gave up an one-out single to Marnix Ruben in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, he walked Yurdion Martie, but a force play-grounder ended the at bat. Last year, Van de Sanden and Martie were teammates when both played for RCH-Pinguïns.

Amsterdam Pirates added two unearned runs in the top of the seventh. Alex Madera led off with a walk, then appeared to be eliminated at second base on a force play-grounder by next batter Kenny Berkenbosch, but that ended in a throwing error and Pirates got two baserunners. Two flyouts followed, meaning there would have been three outs at this moment when the error was not made. With runners on first and second base, Jeffrey Levenstone made a throwing error on a grounder by Jorrit Penseel, which led to a run. A following single by Jason Jakobus brought in another run and lifted the lead to 7-0.

Jairo Samboe became the third pitcher for Twins in the top of the eighth. He got the bases loaded with two outs, but avoided giving up runs. With one out, Denzel Richardson walked and with two outs, Samboe hit pinch-hitter Luca van Gorkum with a pitch, then also walked Oliver van der Wijst. The three runners were left behind, as pinch-hitter Tieme Nahuis flied out.

In the top of the ninth, Pirates rallied for four runs on five basehits, scoring all runs with two outs. Jorrit Penseel led off with an infield-hit and with one out, Roelie Henrique connected for a double. Next batter Duco Nuijten flied out, but that became a sacrifice fly, as Penseel was able to score. Hereafter, Denzel Richardson and Alex Madera connected for back-to-back RBI-doubles. With Madera on second base, Jairo Samboe hit Luca van Gorkum for the second time with a pitch. The lefthander then gave up a runscoring single to Oliver van der Wijst, which made it an 11-0 score.

In the bottom of the seventh, with Pirates leading 7-0, Sven van de Sanden walked lead-off hitter Luuk Visser and was relieved by Ben Meyer. He struckout the next two batters, then got a force play-grounder. The righthander retired the side in the eighth.

With Pirates now leading 11-0, Finn Kragt took the mound in the ninth. He began with a strikeout, then gave up a double to Luuk Bun. But with only the third Twins-runner in scoring position, Kragt also struckout the next two batters to end the game and seal the shutout.
