Neptunus outscores Hoofddorp Pioniers in series-opener
Nederlands

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus recorded a comfortable 8-1 victory on Thursday-evening (April 20) in the series-opener against Hoofddorp Pioniers.

In its last two games, Neptunus nipped RCH Memorie Sieraden 2-1 and 3-0. Tonight, the team scored at least once in the third through eighth inning to come to a comfortable win this time.

Neptunus collected eight basehits, including three by Dwayne Kemp. For the veteran player, this is his third 3-hit game of the season in seven games played.

Four Neptunus-pitchers gave up only two basehits tonight.

It was a historic night in Dutch baseball, as for the first time ever in the highest division, two No-Hitters were thrown on the same day and both games had a special ending.
At Bussum, Lars Huijer threw a 7-inning No-Hitter for HCAW in a 10-0 win against Quick Amersfoort. HCAW led only 4-0 after six innings, then rallied for six runs in the seventh to end the game via the mercy-rule.
At Heemstede, three pitchers threw a combined No-Hitter for DSS/Kinheim against RCH Memorie Sieraden. This game also had an ending via a special rule, as it ended after eight complete innings due to the 10:30 PM curfew-rule. DSS/Kinheim won 12-4 with RCH scoring its four runs without recording a basehit.

In the opening-game against Hoofddorp Pioniers, Neptunus opened the score in the bottom of the third inning, then kept on adding runs in each of the following at bats. Opponent Pioniers scored its lone run in the sixth at bat.

After the Pioniers-defense had turned a double play in the bottom of the first, Neptunus came close to its first run in the next at bat. Dwayne Kemp led off with a double off of starter Sem Lauf and stole third base with one out. He was left behind, as Lauf closed by striking out Christian Diaz and Sheadion Jamanika.

Neptunus then opened the score with an unearned run in the bottom of the third. With one out, Sem Lauf hit Rayshelon Carolina with a pitch. Moments later, he was able to move from first to third base on a passed ball. He then scored on a grounder by Stijn van der Meer.

The home-team added two runs with two outs in the fourth. First, John Polonius led off with a double, then Dwayne Kemp was hit by a pitch. Arthur Bonevacia then hit the ball into short centerfield, which gave the runners not much room to advance. And so, Polonius was forced at third base (85), while Kemp moved to second base. Next, it was Bonevacia who was forced out on a grounder by Christian Diaz. In an attempt to complete a double play, a throwing error followed, which enabled Kemp to score. Sheadion Jamanika followed with a runscoring single and that lifted the lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, another run was scored. Rayshelon Carolina led off with a walk, stole second base and scored on a following single by Stijn van der Meer. After a double play accounted for two outs, John Polonius walked and Dwayne Kemp singled, which led to a pitching change. Kaien Oukes took over and got an inning-ending flyout, meaning two runners were left behind.

Tom de Blok started for Neptunus and got only one runner in scoring position in the five innngs that he was on the mound. In the second inning, the righthander gave up a lead-off double to Daan Terstall, who moved to third base on a grounder by Vincent Mevissen. In the third and fifth inning, De Blok walked a batter, but they were forced out at second base. De Blok struckout six batters and the double in the second inning was the lone basehit he gave up.

Lefthander Ryan Huntington took over from De Blok in the sixth and he gave up the lone Pioniers-run, which was unearned. Huntington walked lead-off hitter Terrance Heemskerk, then gave up a single to Duncan Beljaards. The latter then appeared to be forced out on a grounder towards third base by Daan Terstall, but a throwing error followed. Heemskerk scored, Beljaards ended up third base and Terstall reached second base. But they were left behind, as Huntington struckout the next two batters, then a flyout ended the at bat. Huntington retired the side in the seventh, striking out two more batters.

In the bottom of the sixth, Neptunus scored another run. Kaien Oukes walked lead-off hitter Christian Diaz and with one out, also Enrique Hatma walked. A pitching change followed and Sem Nijman took over, but he got the bases loaded when he walked Rayshelon Carolina. Diaz then scored on a sacrifice fly by Stijn van der Meer, who got three RBI's. Nijman got the bases loaded again when he walked Roger Bernadina, but this time, he closed with a strikeout.

Neptunus scored its next run in the seventh, but also left the bases loaded for the second time. New pitcher Jesse van Es gave up a lead-off single to Dwayne Kemp, who then stole second base. Hereafter, Van Es (who made his big league-debut) got the bases loaded when he walked Christian Diaz and gave up an infield-hit to Sheadion Jamanika. Just as in the previous at bat, the run was then scored on a sacrifice fly. Kemp scored on the fly by Enrique Hatma. The bases got loaded agai when Rayshelon Carolina was hit by a pitch. It was the second hit batter for Carolina, who got none official at bats in this game, as he also walked twice. With three runners on base, the inning ended with a flyout.

In the bottom of the eighth, Neptunus scored its seventh and eighth run in the game. When Van Es walked Jayden Mohamed and John Polonius, Daan Kuit took over the Pioniers-pitching. After an infield-fly, he got the bases loaded when he walked Arthur Bonevacia. A single by Christian Diaz and sacrifice fly by Sheadion Jamanika then accounted for the two runs.

Pioniers got two more baserunners in its final two at bats. With one out in the eighth offf off new pitcher Diegomar Markwell, Duncan Beljaards reached on an error, but he stranded on first base. In the ninth, closer Mike Groen struckout the first two batters. He then saw Max Vonk reach on the third error in the game by third baseman Stijn van der Meer.
