RCH-Pinguïns strikes early to win against DSS/Kinheim after long rain-delay
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - Two days after being no-hit in the series-opener on Thursday-evening, RCH Memorie Sieraden won 7-3 in the second game against DSS/Kinheim on Saturday (April 22). Due to rain in the previous hours and the status of the playing-field, the start of the game was postponed to 3:30 PM, one-and-a-half hour later than scheduled. The game eventually started 30 more minutes later and ended around 6:30 PM.

On Thursday-evening, DSS/Kinheim opened with a 12-4 victory and three pitchers then threw an 8-inning combined No-Hitter. RCH-Pinguïns then scored four runs without recording a basehit.

Today, RCH-Pinguïns scored three runs in the second inning and hold onto the lead since then. The team collected eight basehits, including two by Geoffrey Verhoef. DSS/Kinheim got five basehits, but also committed five errors.

Two games were cancelled on this rainy Saturday-afternoon. In Amersfoort, the game between Quick Amersfoort and HCAW was delayed for 30 minutes and then cancelled. In Hoofddorp, the game between Hoofddorp Pioniers and Curaçao Neptunus was postponed for one hour, but then also rained out. Both games will be made up on Monday.

In Amsterdam, the game between Amsterdam Pirates and Twins Oosterhout started more than one hour later than scheduled.

In a game that began two hours later than scheduled, RCH-Pinguïns took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning, then allowed only one opposing run through the sixth inning. The team then added four more runs in the final four at bats.

After being retired in order in the top of the first inning, RCH-Pinguïns scored three runs with two outs in the second off of starter Nick Boxelaar. With one out, the righthander walked Denzel Brooks, then gave up a single to Luis Gonzalez Garay. With runners at the corners, the latter was forced out on a grounder by Jaison Gijsbertha. On this grounder, Brooks scored the first run. Geoffrey Verhoef then singled and Tijani Dunlop followed with a runscoring single. Moments later, Verhoef scored the third run in the at bat on a single by Raul Jacobs.

DSS/Kinheim got one run back in its second at bat off of starter Juan Carlos Sulbaran. The righthander gave up a lead-off double to Sem Kuijper, who then advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a following grounder by his brother Donny Kuijper.

Three scoreless innings followed. RCH-Pinguïns was retired in order twice and got two baserunners in the fourth, one of whom stranded on first base. DSS/Kinheim was retired in order in all these at bats by Sulbaran, who struckout five batters in this span.

RCH-Pinguïns then added an unearned run in the top of the sixth. Lead-off hitter Aldrich Guzman reached on an error, then Denzel Brooks singled. Guzman, who had moved to third base, scored on a sacrifice fly by Luis Gonzalez Garay.

Juan Carlos Sulbaran also retired the side in the bottom of the sixth. With that, the righthander had retired the last 13 batters he faced since the second inning. In the bottom of the seventh, with RCH leading 4-1, Mike van den Berg took over the pitching from Sulbaran. He gave up two runs, which narrowed DSS/Kinheim's deficit to only 4-3.

Van den Berg gave up a lead-off infield-hit to Urving Kemp, then hit Sem Kuijper with a pitch. Donny Kuijper followed with a single that brought in Kemp. After arriving at first base, Donny Kuijper was replaced by pinch-runner Thomas Bos, who played in his first game of the season. Moments later, Sem Kuijper was forced out at third base on a comeback-grounder by Mees Robberse. With two outs, Jesse van den Berg hit the ball into leftfield for his first big league-basehit. Bos scored on the single, while Robberse and Van den Berg ended up on third and second base. Van den Berg's single on his namesake led to a pitching change. Chris Koeiman took over and got an inning-ending flyout.

RCH-Pinguïns immediately scored some insurance runs in the following at bats off of closer Robyn Clara, who took over the pitching in the eighth. In this at bat, the team scored two unearned runs. The righthander was greeted with a lead-off double by Aldrich Guzman, who then scored when a throwing error was made on a following grounder by Denzel Brooks, who ended up on second base. With one out, he advanced on a grounder by Jaison Gijsbertha, then scored when an error was made on a grounder by Geoffrey Verhoef.

Another run was added in the ninth. With one out, Raul Jacobs was hit by a pitch, stole second base and scored on a 2-out double by Sebastiaan van der Horst.

RCH-closer Chris Koeiman encountered no problems in the eighth and ninth inning. He retired the side both times and earned his second save.
