HCAW sweeps Quick Amersfoort with small, then bigger shutout
Nederlands

AMERSFOORT (Neth.) - HCAW completed a 3-game sweep with a 14-0 shutout against Quick Amersfoort in a make-up game on Tuesday-evening (April 25).

However, the shutout sounds bigger than it really was (or became). After six innings, HCAW led only 2-0, but the small shutout became bigger when the team rallied for six runs in both the seventh and eighth inning to end the game via the mercy-rule after all. For HCAW, this not only was its third consecutive shutout against the Amersfoort-team, it also was the team's fifth shutout in its first six games of the season.

In the series-opener on Thursday-evening, HCAW won 10-0 in a 7-inning mercy-rule game. Lars Huijer then threw a complete game No-Hitter. The second game on Saturday was cancelled due to rain and field-conditions and was initially re-scheduled for Monday-evening. The game rained out again and was postponed to tonight. On Sunday, HCAW shutout Quick with a 4-0 score.

Tonight, HCAW collected fourteen basehits, including three by Delano Selassa, Jair van Borkulo and Max Draijer. Selassa also scored three runs, while Shurman Marlin batted in three runs. Quick was limited to only two basehits by three pitchers.

All nine innings appeared to be needed in tonight's game, as HCAW led only 2-0 after six innings. Then suddenly the Bussum-started to pile up runs. First, a 6-run rally in the seventh inning. Although that lifted the lead to 8-0, it was still two runs shy of the needed mercy-rule run-difference. That was accomplished in the eighth inning when another 6-run rally made it a 14-0 score. And with that, it became a mercy-rule ended game after all.

After the game had been cancelled on Saturday-afternoon, it rained out again on Monday-evening and was postponed to tonight. As a result of the cancellations, HCAW changed its pitching rotation. Saturday's announced starter Dennis Burgersdijk now started instead on Sunday. On that day, Nathan Diaby was announced as starter to fill in for Kaj Timmermans, who could not be with the team in the weekend due to his regular work. Timmermans was then named to start in the make-up game on Monday, but that rained out again. Tonight, it was Diaby again who was named as starter instead of Timmermans. And Quick? Jhan Rifaela was to be the starter on Saturday. But after the rainout, his start wasn't moved to Sunday, as it was the announced starter Brian van Laar who then took the mound. Rifaela moved with his game to Monday-evening. And tonight, he was the starter again.

In the top of the first inning, HCAW opened the score off of Jhan Rifaela. The lefthander gave up a lead-off single to Delano Selassa, who then stole second base, moved to third base on a grounder by Victor Draijer and scored on a triple by Jeadnro Tromp. Rifaela followed with two strikeouts.

HCAW doubled its lead in the second at bat. The team got the bases loaded when Shurman Marlin, Jair van Borkulo and Max Draijer (bunt) all singled. Marlin then scored on a sacrifice fly by Bob van der Meer, but the other two were left behind.

Hereafter, Jhan Rifaela threw four solid innings and didn't encounter any problem. He retired the side three times and allowed only one batter to reach base, who then stranded on second base. In these four innings, Rifaela struckout five batters to increase his total to seven.

Nathan Diaby, who made his first start of the season, was supported with a double play in the first inning. The righthander then got two baserunners with one out in the second inning when Marvin Jakobus singled and Irving Redan walked. A force play and strikeout followed and Jakobus stranded on third base.

Quick again got two baserunners with one out in the third inning when Bas Rijpstra (lead-off) and Kai Berkel (with one out) walked. Two grounders followed and this time, both runners were left behind in scoring position.

Trailing 2-0, Quick got the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Irving Redan walked and moved on a wild pitch and a single by Jordy Burger. With two outs, Bas Rijpstra walked, which loaded the bases, but Nathan Diaby closed with a strikeout.

In the fifth inning, Jasper Elfrink took over the HCAW-pitching and retired the side, incuding a strikeout. The lefthander added two strikeouts in the sixth, walking one batter.

And so, HCAW led only 2-0 after six complete innings, but it didn't come easy.

But then HCAW suddenly struck with a 6-run rally in the top of the seventh to not only take more distance, but also to take a deciding lead.

Jair van Borkulo led off with a single, was awarded second base on a balk and moved to third base on a following single by Max Draijer. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by Bob van der Meer, which ended the evening for Jhan Rifaela. Deef van Leersum took over the pitching, but was greeted with a ground-rule double by Delano Selassa, then a sacrifice fly by Victor Draijer. A walk for Jeandro Tromp and an RBI-single by Quintin de Cuba followed. Next, the bases got loaded when Van Leersum hit Kevin Dirksen with a pitch. Shurman Marlin then cleared the bases with a 3-run double. And that increased the lead to 8-0.

Another 6-run rally followed in the top of the eighth. Riley Gonesh was the new pitcher for Quick. He began with a lead-off walk for Max Draijer and with one out, Gonesh gave up a single to Delano Selassa, then uncorked a runscoring wild pitch and got the bases loaded via walks for Victor Draijer and Jeandro Tromp. An error on a grounder by Quintin de Cuba led to a run, kept the bases loaded and also brought in new pitcher Sander Crama. He gave up an RBI-single to Kevin Dirksen and when that was followed by an outfield-error, another run was scored. With two outs, Jair van Borkulo singled to re-load the bases, then Max Draijer added a 2-run double, which made it a 14-0 score.

Quick was kept silence in its final two at bats by new pitcher Ruben Dekker. He retired the side in both the seventh and eighth inning.
