Amsterdam Pirates opens series vs. Quick Amersfoort with mercy-rule win
Nederlands

AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - Amsterdam Pirates recorded a 12-2 mercy-rule victory against Quick Amersfoort in the series-opener on Wednesday-evening (April 26).

This week, the new 3-game series begins on Wednesday, instead of Thursday, which is generally the first day of a new series. On Thursday, April 27, it is King's Day, the day that King Willem-Alexander celebrates his birthday and this year, no games are scheduled on that day.

Amsterdam Pirates didn't start the game well and faced a 3-2 deficit halfway the third inning. The team then re-took the lead and took more distance, reaching the 10-run difference in the seventh inning.

Pirates collected seventeen basehits, including four by Denzel Richardson and three by Roelie Henrique and Alex Madera. Richardon also scored four runs and batted in four, making him responsible for eight of the twelve Pirates-runs.

Quick Amersfoort was limited to only four basehits.

In tonight's game, the first former big league softball-player as well as former big league softball-coach made her debut as Official Scorer. Caroline Theunissen played in the highest softball-league for DSC '74 and Amsterdam Pirates. In 1994, while she was a player, Caroline was the interim Head Coach for the big league-team of Amsterdam Pirates in two games. In 2003 and 2005, Caroline was an Assistant Coach of the big league team of Pirates and in 2006, she had the same position at DSC '74. In 2013, she was the Head Coach of Centrals in the first two games of the season. Caroline Theunissen also has been a member of the board of the Royal Netherlands Baseball and Softball Association (KNBSB).

Caroline had an earlier assignment on Thursday, April 13 in Hoofddorp, but that game rained out. And so, she made her debut as Official Scorer in tonight's game. This season, Caroline is one of five new Official Scorers in the Dutch big league baseball/softball. The others are Sven Dobbe, Ingrid Ooms, Vinze Otten and Colinda de Vries.

Tonight, Caroline was accompanied by veteran Official Scorer Marco Stoovelaar, who did the play-by-play and is in his 47th season as Official Scorer. With that, two former Olympic participants were re-united. During the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing (China), both were part of the staff of the Netherlands Softball Team. Caroline Theunissen then was the Team Manager and Marco Stoovelaar was the Media Officer and Team Scorer of the Orange Team.

Amsterdam Pirates trailed 3-2 halfway the third inning, then turned the game around and led 7-2 after four at bats. Six of those seven Amsterdam-runs were unearned. In the remainder of the game, Pirates added five more runs and ended the game via the mercy-rule. The team had two 4-run rallies.

Amsterdam Pirates scored the first run in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Jack Wagner. Roelie Henrique led off with a single, moved into scoring position on a passed ball and stole third base. With one out, he scored on a single by Denzel Richardson, who stranded on second base himself.

Pirates-starter Sven van de Sanden retired the side in the first two innings, but then gave up two runs with two outs in the third. Luca Muller led off with a double, but he was eliminated at third base on a following bunt by Lars Visser. Van de Sanden followed with a strikeout, but then got the bases loaded when he gave up a single to Amar van Zwieten and walked Joshbert José Ponte Manganiello. Pascal Zegwaard followed with a single. On the basehit, Visser scored the tying run and Van Zwieten also was able to score the go-ahead run when an outfield-error followed.

Quick's lead was shortlived, as Pirates answered with two unearned runs in the bottom of the third, which were scored with two outs. With one out, Denzel Richardson and Alex Madera singled to put runners at the corners. Moments later, Madera was caught stealing, but with two outs, Kenny Berkenbosch walked. A drive into the outfield by next batter Oliver van der Wijst Severino then ended in an error. Richardson scored the tying run and Berkenbosch ended up on third base. In what was not really a double-steal situation, the next run was scored. Van der Wijst stole second base and it wasn't until the throw was made that Berkenbosch took off from third base and was able to score the go-ahead run.

From there, the game belonged to Amsterdam Pirates. Quick Amersfoort was kept scoreless and the home-team added nine more runs.

Sven van de Sanden didn't encounter problems on the mound and not only threw his first complete game of the season, but also in his big league-career. The righthander struckout the side in the fourth inning. Quick came closest to another run in the top of the fifth. With one out, debuting Abel Kramer reached on an error and Amar van Zwieten followed with a single. But the latter was then forced out on a grounder by Joshbert Ponte, who later stole second base. The runners stranded on second and third base.

In the top of the sixth, Ibrahin Redan led off with a walk and advanced on a wild pitch with one out, but was left behind on second base. Van de Sanden retired the side again in the seventh.

In the meantime, Pirates had taken more distance en route to a 10-run difference.

The team scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth, three of which were unearned. Rookie Ilyas van den Bos led off with his second single in the game, then Roelie Henrique reached on a bunt-single. When that was followed by a throwing error, Van den Bos was able to move to third base. He then scored on a single by Duco Nuijten. A double-steal gave the home-team runners on second and third base and both scored on a following throwing error on a grounder by Denzel Richardson. He then stole second base, advanced to third base on a flyout and scored on a wild pitch.

Pirates scored its next run in the bottom of the sixth off of debuting pitcher Jay van de Horik. He was welcomed in the big league with a lead-off triple by Denzel Richardson, who scored on a following single by Alex Madera.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Pirates had another 4-run rally to reach a 10-run difference. First, Van de Horik recorded his first big league-strikeout when he eliminated lead-off hitter Ilyas van den Bos. But the righthander then walked Jason Jakobus and gave up a single to Roelie Henrique. Three runscoring basehits followed. First, pinch-hitter Jules Cremer delivered an RBI-double, then Denzel Richardson and Alex Madera added RBI-singles, which lifted the lead to 11-2. For Richardson, this was his fourth basehit in the game. Next, the bases got loaded when Kenny Berkenbosch walked. The 10-run difference was then reached when an error was made on a force play-grounder by Oliver van der Wijst.
