First win Twins, fourth for Neptunus; Two cancellations
Nederlands

BUSSUM / HEEMSTEDE / HOOFDDORP / ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - The schedule on the first day of the second series of the 2024 season was cut in half on Thursday-evening (April 18), due to the weather-conditions, resulting in two cancellations.

Curaçao Neptunus opened successful against Quick Amersfoort, which played its first game and led briefly. Neptunus won 11-1 in eight innings to win its fourth game in a row.

Oosterhout Twins, which was swept by Neptunus last week, recorded its first win tonight against HCAW. Twins was outhit 8-7, but won 5-3 in a game that ended after eight complete innings due to the 10:30 PM curfew-rule.

We also had the first two cancellations of the new season. Due to rain in the previous night and morning, the fields in Hoofddorp and Heemstede had become unplayable. And so, the game between Worldwide Pharma Logistics Hoofddorp Pioniers and Amsterdam Pirates in Hoofddorp was the first to be cancelled in the afternoon. Later in the afternoon, the game between RCH-Pinguïns and DSS/Kinheim in Heemstede was also postponed. Both games have been re-scheduled for coming Tuesday-evening (April 23).

(April 18)

Curaçao Neptunus vs. Quick Amersfoort

In Rotterdam, Quick Amersfoort opened its season with an 11-1 mercy-rule loss at Curaçao Neptunus. After completion of last season, Quick Amersfoort saw many players leave. And so, the team begins the new season with 13 rookies on its roster. Four of them already made their debut in the highest league last year, but as they played in only a few games, they still will have their rookie-status this season.

Quick was retired in order in the first inning by Neptunus-starter Tom de Blok, but in the second inning, Taylor Clemensia led off with a single. Clemensia is one of the few players in the team with several seasons of big league-experience. De Blok retired the next three batters. Quick would record only two basehits tonight.

Veteran lefthander Jhan Rifaela started for Quick. He got some baserunners in the first three innings, two on a single, two on an error. But he was supported with a double play in the second and Neptunus only came into scoring position in the third.

With two outs in the top of the fourth, Quick opened the score. Taylor Clemensia then walked and scored on a following double by Enrique Hatma, who last season made his big league-debut while playing for Neptunus.

The lead was shortlived, as Neptunus came alongside in the bottom of the fifth. A walk, error on a bunt and a single gave the team three runners with one out. A sacrifice fly by Christian Diaz then brought in the tying run, but Neptunus also would leave three runners behind.

Neptunus then rallied for four runs in the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out, the go-ahead run was scored on a sacrifice fly by Stijn van der Meer. After a walk for Vincent Ahrens, next batter Christian Diaz cleared the bases with a 3-run double to lift the lead to 5-1.

Neptunus added two runs with two outs in the seventh off of new pitcher Floris Jan Kamphorst. After initially being support by a double play, the righthander walked Darryl Collins. The former pro advanced to third base on a single by Jesse Aussems. Collins, who was released by the Kansas City Royals-organization on March 24, then scored on a following single by Rayshelon Carolina. Moments later, Aussems scored on a throwing error when Carolina stole second base.

Neptunus rallied again in the eighth, this time off of new pitcher Faisel Odulia, who was one of four Quick-players who made their debut in the big league. With two runners on base and one out, the righthander gave up four consecutive runscoring singles to Kevin Dirksen, Darryl Collins, Jesse Aussems and Rayshelon Carolina, which made it a 10-run difference (11-1) and ended the game.

HCAW vs. Oosterhout Twins

In Bussum, the first two at bats were high-scoring, as HCAW and Oosterhout Twins combined on five runs.

HCAW opened the score in the bottom of the first inning off of Simon Gross, who was initially not announced as starting pitcher. American righthander Wyatt Lankford was announced, but the German righthander started instead. In the first inning, Brendly Martina led off with a walk, advanced on a wild pitch, reached third base on a grounder and scored on a passed ball.

Twins answered with three runs in the top of the second off of starter Sedley Karel. The righthander walked lead-off hitter Luuk Bun, then gave up a single to Terrence Garcia. Hereafter, Bun scored the tying run when Mick Vos also singled. After a walk for Thijmen Peters had loaded the bases, Karel followed with a strikeout, but then also walked Marnix Ruben. That put Twins ahead and also led to a pitching-change. Jasper Popken took over, but he was greeted with a sacrifice fly by Railison Bentura that made it a 3-1 score.

HCAW got one run back in its second at bat. Jair van Borkulo led off with a walk and moved on a single by Bob van der Meer. After a double-steal, Van Borkulo scored when a balk was called. But a strikeout and foul-fly ended the at bat.

In the bottom of the third inning, Simon Gross helped himself defensively. He first gave up singles to Brendly Martina and Jeandro Tromp. But hereafter, Gross picked off Martina at second base. After next batter Delano Selassa had walked, Victor Draijer hit a line drive. But that was caught by Gross, who then eliminated Tromp at second base to complete an inning-ending double play.

Two scoreless innings followed. In the bottom of the fifth, Wyatt Lankford took over the pitching for Twins.

In the top of the sixth inning, Twins took some more distance by scoring twice. The bases got loaded via Luuk Bun (single), Terrence Garcia (walk) and Mick Vos (bunt-single). Thijmen Peters followed with a runscoring single, which led to another pitching-change. Dennis Burgersdijk, who had been sidelined with an injury, took over from Jasper Popken. He gave up a sacrifice fly to Marnix Ruben, which made it a 5-2 score.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, HCAW scored its third run. Delano Selassa led off with a single, moved on a single by Victor Draijer and a flyout, then scored on an infield-hit by Bob van der Meer. But the home-team also stranded two runners.

Burgersdijk threw two innings, as he was relieved by Nick Keur in the top of the eighth. Keur began with a walk, but closed with two strikeouts.

With the 10:30 PM curfew-rule time approaching, the bottom of the eighth went underway in the slow-paced game. When the curfew-time has been reached, no new inning can begin thereafter. With one out, maybe to stall some time (who knows?), Twins Head Coach Rob Hendriks came out to the mound for a visit of Wyatt Lankford. Moments later, Jair van Borkulo reached on an error. Again, Hendriks came out, this time to bring in closer Raf Cocu for Lankford. In the meantime, it became clear that this would be the final at bat for HCAW. Cocu got a force play-grounder from Bob van der Meer. After the latter had advanced on a passed ball, Cocu closed with a strikeout to end the game and earn a save.
