Neptunus wins Indoor Cup; Eva Voortman throws three Perfect Games in a row
Nederlands

SCHIEDAM (Neth.) - Neptunus has won the international Indoor Cup Softball Tournament for the second time. On Sunday (January 15), the Rotterdam-based team nipped Roef! 1-0 in the Final of the annual event in Schiedam (Netherlands).

Neptunus won The Cup for the first time in 2020. A few weeks later, Neptunus also won the Pre-Season Tournament, the event that is organized by Roef! and also is played indoors. Back then, that tournament was the last activity until early July due to (new) measures taken against the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). In 2020, an abbreviated regular season was played and most tournaments, both national and international, were either cancelled or postponed. Due to new and stricter measures, the Indoor Cup was cancelled in both 2021 and 2022.

But now, three years later, the tournament was played again with sixteen participating teams from five different countries. For the first time, a team from Sweden participated in the event. Two teams came from the Czech Republic and one from Great Britain. As always, the USA was represented by six teams. The remaining six teams came from host the Netherlands. Combined, they played 48 games in three days in three indoor-halls in Schiedam.

And so, Neptunus 'repeated' as tournament-winner. Neptunus-pitcher Eva Voortman dominated on the finale day of the event and wrote softball-history, as the lefthander was involved in three consecutive Perfect Games! A feat that was never accomplished before in the Indoor Cup-history. In the Quarter Final, she was part of a combined Perfect Game, then she went the distance herself in both the Semi-Final and Final. The National Team-pitcher was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

The indoor-tournament was founded by American Kirt Whiteside with the French city of Lyon the playing site. However, after a few editions, the event moved to Schiedam, which now organized the tournament for the 21st time. As always, Whiteside was present himself to open the event and handle the Award-ceremony.

During the Opening Ceremony on Friday-evening, there also was another stellar performance again from Cobus Oosting, who live sung the National Anthems of the five participating countries.

(January 18)

First Round

In the First Round, the 16 participating teams were divided into four Pools of four each and all played three games.

Pool A
Roef! (Netherlands) finished in first place in Pool A, but the team didn't dominate. Roef! opened the event with a scoreless tie against Euro Stars (Netherlands). Both teams recorded two basehits. Roef! left four runners behind on base, including three in scoring position, but Euro Stars was the lone team that got a runner on third base. Roef!-pitcher Marjolein Merkx struckout eleven batters.

In its next game, Roef! won 7-4 against Avengers (USA), but trailed 4-3 halfway the third inning. Roef! scored three runs in the first inning on a single by Isa Los and basesloaded walks for Tess Remmers and Melissa Rottiers, but also left three runners behind. In the top of the third inning, Avengers scored four runs which were the result of five defensive errors. Roef! answered with a 4-run rally on only basehit, but that was hit by lead-off hitter Benthe Zwanenburg. Later, two runs were scored on fielder's choice-grounders by Melissa Rottiers and Kate Geldof. Two runs were then added on a basesloaded walk for Nicky Uytendaal and a hit by pitch for Isa Los. Roef!-pitchers Kim Emmen and Vera de Boer threw a combined No-Hitter.

In its third game, Roef! nipped Impact (USA) 1-0, scoring the lone run in the third inning. Tess Remmers then led off with a double and went on to score following a bunt by Lisa de Vries. Benthe Zwanenburg batted 3-for-3.

In other games in this Pool, Impact opened with a 2-1 win against Avengers. Impact scored twice in the top of the third inning, thanks to a 2-out, 2-run double by Katelynn Murphy. Avengers got one run back in its third at bat on a bunt by Jalyn Yakey.

Euro Stars shutout Impact 6-0 in its second game. Bodine Jansen and Daisy Visser struckout ten batters and threw a combined No-Hitter.

The game between Avengers and Euro Stars on Saturday also ended in a scoreless tie. Romy van der Ham went the distance for Euro Stars, struckout eleven batters and gave up only one basehit.

Pool B
In Pool B, Neptunus (Netherlands) finished in a tie for first place with Joudrs Praha (Czech Republic). Neptunus was awarded first place base on overall run-difference in the Pool.

Just as Roef! in Pool A, Neptunus opened with a scoreless tie against Joudrs Praha in what was a pitching-duel. Both teams got only one basehit. Neptunus-starter Eva Voortman struckout eight batters in three innings, then Nienke Weis gave up the basehit with two outs in the fourth inning. Amálie Chaloupková went the distance for Joudrs and struckout eight batters in 4 1/3 inning.

In its second game, Neptunus shutout Spirit (USA), 3-0. Neptunus scored its first run in the first inning when Reganied Franka singled, stole second base and scored on a single by Anouk van den Heuvel. Two runs were added in the third inning. Eva Voortman (who was 3-for-4) then singled and scored when Reganied Franka reached on an error, which was followed by an RBI-grounder from Anouk van den Heuvel.

Neptunus also recorded a 3-0 shutout in its next game against Pride (USA). This time, the team scored all runs in the first inning. Minke Blok led off with a double and scored on a following double by Lorijn Buise. With one out, Laura Wissink added an RBI-double and later scored herself on a fielder's choice. Winning pitcher Esmee Toet gave up only one basehit.

After the scoreless tie against Neptunus, Joudrs Praha also won its next two games. First, the Czech team nipped Pride, 2-1. After Pride had left three runners behind in the top of the first inning, Joudrs scored twice in its first at bat, thanks to an RBI-triple by Karolína Beránková and a 2-out single by Amálie Chaloupková. Hereafter, Pride-pitcher Sydney Bosgraaf, who struckout twelve batters, gave up no more runs. Pride scored its lone run in the second inning when Mia van der Heide led off with a single and scored on a 2-out single by Ella Reifschneider.

Joudrs closed the Pool with a 2-0 win against Spirit on Saturday. The first run was scored in the first inning on an error, then the second run was added in the second at bat on a double by Aneta Rambousková. Winning pitcher Amálie Chaloupková threw a No-Hitter and struckout ten batters.

Pride shutout Spirit in the first game in this Pool on Friday-evening. Trailing 4-0, Spirit scored a run in the top of the fifth, but as this inning was not completed within the 50-minute playing time, it didn't count for the final score. Pride opened the score in the first inning on RBI-grounders by Avery Hobson and Paige Ratliff. A run was then added in the third and fourth inning.

The team of Pride is composed of players from the Grand Rapids, Michigan area which means some of them have a Dutch background. One of them is Manager Michelle Brander (now Michelle Metiva). In 2003, she played for the Netherlands National Softball Team as a catcher. She then participated with the Orange Team in the European Championship and the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Spirit-Manager Rich LeViere participated in his 23rd Indoor Cup-tournament. After having been one of the coaches when the event was held in Lyon (France), he has been to all 21 editons in Schiedam. In this tournament, his granddaughter was one of the players. The team was composed of players mostly coming from Pennsylvania. Back home, Coach Rich is the President and Head Instructor for the Pittsburgh Spirit Travel Teams since 1998. Two of his players went on to play professionally for Akron Racers in the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF).

Pool C
Olympia Haarlem (Netherlands) remained unbeaten in Pool C and recorded three comfortable victories, which it all played on Saturday. Last year, Olympia repeated as Dutch National Champion and also captured the European Premiere Cup.

In its first game, Olympia Haarlem shutout Twins Oosterhout (Netherlands), 4-0. In the first inning, Britt Vonk and Brenda Beers singled and scored on a 2-out double by Lisa Hop. An error led to an additional run in the second inning and a bunt-single by Brenda Beers accounted for the fourth run in the fourth. Twins Oosterhout recorded only one basehit off of pitchers Jessie van Aalst and Isis Kistemaker.

In its next game, Olympia outsored the Czech Under-18 Team (Czech Republic) 11-1 on eight basehits, including three by Franka van Dijk. Olympia rallied for six runs in the first inning. After the first three runs had been scored on a single by Lorraine Kieft and two hit batters with the bases loaded, Britt Vonk delivered a baseclearing, 3-run double. A single by Yindi Beekveldt brought in the next run in the second inning. Four more runs were added in the third without hitting a basehit. The runs were scored on three basesloaded walks and a hit batter, all with no outs. The Czech Team scored its lone run in the third inning on basesloaded walk.

In its third game, Olympia shutout Chaos (USA), 5-0. This time, the team scored only once in its first at bat on a grounder by Jessie van Aalst. Two runs were added in both the second and third inning. In the second on a 2-run double by Lorraine Kieft, in the next at bat on a double by Franka van Dijk and an error. Lisa Hop and Machteld Rector threw a combined one-hitter.

The other three teams in this Pool all finished in a tie for second place, all winning one game and losing two. Based on the run-difference, Chaos finished second, followed by Twins Oosterhout and the Czech Team.

In the first game on Friday-evening, the Czechs won 1-0 against Chaos. The lone run was scored in the fourth inning on a single by Katerina Kucharíková. Pitchers Kamila Groeslová and Lucie Vecerová threw a combined No-Hitter.

After having lost its first game, Chaos faced Twins Oosterhout and recorded a 5-3 come-from-behind win. Twins Oosterhout rallied for three runs in the top of the first inning on a single by Kaitlyn Caleen, double by Yee Mei Cheong and walk for Lusi Hermans. Chaos anwered with two runs via a walk for Jules Aragon and a single by Elli Raymond. The American team then erased the deficit by scoring three runs in the third inning. A fielder's choice-grounder by Elli Raymond led to both the tying and go-ahead run run. A basesloaded walk for Jules Aragon lifted the lead to 5-3.

On Saturday, this Pool ended with the game between the Czechs and Twins With a win, the Czech team would finish in second place. But it was Twins (which left eight runners behind) that recorded an 1-0 victory. The lone run was scored in the second inning on a passed ball.

Pool D
In this Pool, Amsterdam Pirates (Netherlands) and The Mix (Great Britain) finished in a tie for first place. They faced each other in the first game, but also ended in a scoreless tie. Hereafter, they both won their next game. Pirates then finished in first place, based on the run-difference.

The first game between Pirates, which played all its three games on Saturday, and The Mix was quickpaced, suspenseful and a pitching-duel. Within the time-limit of 50 minutes, the seventh inning began. Pirates then scored when Winke Verdick led off with a single and scored on a 2-out double by Sanne van der Putten off of Anna-Bč Bartels, who struckout ten batters. But she also was the final batter, as the time-limit had been reached. As the inning was not completed, the run didn't count and so, the game officially ended in a 0-0 tie. The Mix recorded only one basehit off of Mandy van der Maas.

In its second game, Pirates won 6-0 against the Swedish Under-23 Team. Pirates, which less than a month ago named Hubert Bomba as its new Head Coach, rallied for four runs in the second inning. Winke Verdick batted in the first run with a single and Mara Vonk followed with a ground-rule double. The fourth run was scored on a grounder by Kelsy Pieneman. Two runs were added in the third at bat, this time on an error and a basesloaded walk for Pieneman. Winning pitcher Sanne van der Putten struckout nine batters and gave up only one basehit.

In its final game, Amsterdam Pirates erased an early 1-0 deficit against Destroyers (USA). The Americans opened the score in the first inning. Chloe Salapatas led off with a walk and went on to score. Thereafter, no other batter of Destroyers reached base, as pitcher Demi Brinks retired the next 15 batters in a row, including nine strikeouts to complete a No-Hitter. Pirates came alongside in the third inning on a single by Kelsy Pieneman. A 4-run rally followed in the fourth inning on a basesloaded walk for Mickey Ras, an error, a passed ball and a single by Lizzie Clarijs.

Earlier on Saturday, The Mix shutout Destroyers 5-0. The British team scored its first two runs in the second inning on singles by Chelsie Robison and Amie Hutchison (bunt). The team then scored a run in each of the next three at bats. Respectively on a ground-rule double by Alice Hunter, a grounder by Emma Agostini and a grounder by Jade Yerex. Winning pitcher Amie Hutchison gave up only one basehit.

In its final game, The Mix nipped Sweden, 1-0. The lone run was scored in the third inning on a single by Katerine Golik.

In the first game on Friday-evening, Sweden made a strong tournament-debut, winning 5-3 against Destroyers. The Swedish National Under-23 Team rallied for five runs in the second inning, thanks to a 2-run single by Frida Esters, a single by Linnea Sandahl and walks for Emilia Thornemo and Anna Erlandsson. The American opponent answered with three runs via a single by Pascalle Toet and a 2-run double by Chloe Salapatas, but the team ended empty-handed.

Second Round

All sixteen teams were still in the race for the Final when the Second Round was played on Saturday-afternoon. The teams that finished the First Round in first place formed a new Pool and so did the teams that finished in second, third and fourth place.

Olympia Haarlem shutout Amsterdam Pirates 5-0. The team decided the game early, scoring twice in the first inning and adding three more in the second at bat. With one out in the first inning, Britt Vonk and Lorraine Kieft (both newcomers in the team) singled. With two outs, both scored on an error. In the second inning, Vonk (one-run) and Kieft (two-run) delivered back-to-back runscoring doubles. Pirates collected only one basehit off of two pitchers.

Neptunus was outhit 2-1, but won against Roef! with a 3-1 score. Neptunus trailed 1-0 in the third inning, which was the result of a 2-out single by Isa Los in the first inning. Neptunus then scored three runs in the bottom of the third. Lorijn Buise batted in the tying run with a fielder's choice-grounder. Basesloaded walks for Judith Buschman and (newcomer) Damishah Charles accounted for the other runs.

The Mix shutout Joudrs Praha, 4-0. The team scored twice in the first and third at bat. Amie Hutchison (grounder) and Sian Wiginton (single) batted in the first runs. The other two runs were scored on a basesloaded walk for Jade Yerex and a single by Chelsie Robison, who played for Olympia Haarlem in the Dutch big league in 2020. Guest-pitcher Anna-Bč Bartels was the winner and gave up only one basehit and struckout eight batters. This season, the Dutch pitcher will play for Onze Gezellen.

Euro Stars broke an 1-1 tie in the second inning with a 6-run rally and went on to win 7-2 against Chaos. In the first inning, Chaos opened the score on a single by Cassidy Bruner, but Euro Stars came alongside via a double by Daisy Visser. The 6-run rally was highlighted by RBI-singles by Laura Schouten and Julie Winkel.

In Pool Y (teams that finished in 9th through 12th place after the First Round), Pride recorded a big 9-0 shutout against Sweden U23. The American team collected five basehits and scored ten runs, but the tenth was dropped from the final score, as it was scored in a non-completed inning. Pride rallied for seven runs in the first inning. Only one of the runs was batted in by a single by Megan Beemer. Four runs were scored in stolen base-situations. Winning pitcher Sydney Bosgraaf struckout ten batters and threw a No-Hitter.

Twins Oosterhout came from behind to win 4-2 against Impact. Twins scored its first run in the first inning on a single by Yee Mei Cheong, but Impact scored twice in the third on a double by Alexis Kuka and a grounder by Riley Hopkins. Twins answered with three runs, thanks to back-to-back RBI-basehits with two outs by Madelief Croonen (double), Gitte Jansen and Yana Rotthier.

The Czech U18-team won 4-0 in Pool Z against Avengers. Katerina Kucharíková batted in the first run in the first inning with a double. After a basesloaded walk accounted for the second run in the second inning, two runs were added in the third.

Destroyers trailed 1-0, but won 3-1 against Spirit. A 2-out single by Abbie Deiseroth gave Spirit the lead in the third inning. In the next at bat, Destroyers scored three runs on two grounders and an error. Dutch winning pitcher Daniek van de Wiel struckout twelve batters and gave up two basehits.

With these games, the second day of the tournament closed.

Elimination Round

On Sunday, all games were important in this Elimination Round. A loss meant that a team was eliminated. A win meant, the team advanced to the Quarter Finals.

Neptunus erased an early 1-0 deficit against Avengers and went on to win 3-1 to advance.

The game between Twins Oosterhout and Joudrs Praha ended with an 1-1 tie. Twins advanced based on runners reached third base in this game. In the suspenseful game, Joudrs took an 1-0 lead in the third inning via a double by Aneta Rambousková. Twins came alongside in the sixth on an error. The team was then able to complete the sixth inning moments later, otherwise, the run wouldn't have counted, according to the tournament-rules. And so, Twins became the opponent of Neptunus in the Quarter Final.

Pride shutout Chaos 5-0 to advance to the Quarter Final. Leading 1-0, the team rallied for four runs in the second at bat on three wild pitches and a single by Macy Verbeek. Winning pitcher Sydney Bosgraaf struckout eight batters and threw a No-Hitter.

Olympia Haarlem became Pride's opponent in the Quarter Finals by winning 4-0 against Spirit. The team scored three runs in the second inning on an one-out 2-run double by Brenda Beers and a 2-out double by Jessie van Aalst.

Amsterdam Pirates recorded a come-from-behind 4-2 win against Destroyers to advance to the Quarter Finals. Destroyers scored twice in the first inning on doubles by Paije Peterson and guest-player Pascalle Toet. Pirates then struck in the third inning by scoring four runs on an error, an RBI-single by Jeske Meewisse and two walks with the bases loaded.

Euro Stars outscored Sweden U23 2-0 to become the opponent of Pirates in the Quarter Finals. The team scored both runs in the third inning via an error and a sacrifice fly by Julie Winkel. Winning pitcher Romy van der Ham struckout seven batters and gave up three basehits.

Roef! reached the Quarter Finals by winning 4-0 against the Czech U18-team. After three scoreless innings, the tie-break rule came into effect and the team scored three runs in the fourth A 2-run double by Tess Remmers and an error accounted for the runs.

The Mix completed the Quarter Finals by winning 4-1 against Impact. The team decided the game with three runs in the first inning. Singles by Anna-Bč Bartels and Alice Hunter, plus an error accounted for the runs.

Quarter Finals

In the first Quarter Final, Neptunus recorded a 6-0 shutout-win against Twins Oosterhout. With an 1-0 lead, Neptunus added two runs in the second at bat on a wild pitch and a grounder by Minke Blok. An error and a wild pitch with two outs led to two more runs in the fourth. Another wild pitch lifted the lead to 6-0 in the fifth. Eva Voortman started for Neptunus and struckout eight batters in three innings, Esmee Toet then struckout three more in the next two innings. Combined, they threw a Perfect Game.

Hereafter, the other three Quarter Finals were played at the same time.

Olympia Haarlem advanced to the Semi-Final by winning 6-0 against Pride. The Haarlem-team opened the score with two runs in the first inning on a single by Jessie van Aalst and a ground-rule double by Franka van Dijk. The lead was increased via a 4-run rally in the fifth inning. Lisa Hop and Britt Vonk contributed with runscoring singles. Winning pitcher Isis Kistemaker went the distance and gave up only one basehit.

In a suspenseful game, Euro Stars advanced to the Semi-Final by nipping Amsterdam Pirates, 1-0. The lone run was scored in the third inning by Liz van der Hoeven on a passed ball.

Another suspenseful Quarter Final was played in Hall 3 between Roef! and The Mix. The game was decided via the tiebreak-rule and Roef! won 1-0. After four scoreless innings, Roef! scored the lone run in the fifth inning. Tiebreak-runner Lisa de Vries then scored when an error was made on a grounder by Melissa Rottiers.

Semi-Finals

In Hall 1, Roef! won 1-0 against Olympia Haarlem to reach the all-deciding Final. In the last tournament in 2020, Olympia Haarlem played in the Final. The lone run was scored in the top of the third inning. Lead-off hitter Benthe Zwanenburg was hit by a pitch, advanced on a grounder by Kate Geldof and scored on a following double by Nicky Uytendaal. Olympia got several scoring opportunities, but failed to score off pitcher Marjolein Merkx. In the first inning, the team had runners on second and third base with no outs, but the next three batters were eliminated. In the second at bat, Olympia again had runners on second and third, this time with one out. Trailing 1-0, Olympia got another chance in the top of the fourth inning. The team had runners on first and third base and two outs when the 50-minute game-time expired. According to the rules, the batter then completes her at bat. In this case, it would have been easy to issue an intentional walk, which would have ended the game. A basehit would have tied the score and extra innings then would followed. Instead, Marjolein Merkx opted to pitch to the batter and ended the game with a strikeout!

In Hall 2, Neptunus reached the Final in more easier fashion, winning 5-0 against Euro Stars. With that, Neptunus returned to the Final, which it also played (and won) three years ago. Neptunus scored twice in the first inning on a wild pitch and a grounder by Anouk van den Heuvel. Three runs were added in the second inning via a double by Eva Voortman and runscoring grounders by Van den Heuvel and (newcomer) Laura Wissink. As pitcher, Voortman dominated. The lefthander struckout twelve batters and threw another Perfect Game!

Final

In the Final, Neptunus won 1-0 against Roef! to repeat a Tournament-winner. As opposed to all other games, the Final is a 7-inning game without a time-limit.

The well-visited Final was a pitching-duel between Eva Voortman (Neptunus) and Marjolein Merkx (Roef!).

The lone run in the game was scored in the top of third inning. With one out, Eva Voortman singled, stole second base and scored on a 2-out single by Anouk van den Heuvel.

Neptunus got another scoring-opportunity in the fifth inning. This time, Voortman doubled with one out. With two outs, she stole third base in what was a very close play at third base. She stranded, as a pop-fly ended the at bat.

The minimal lead never came into jeopardy, as Eva Voortman again dominated. The lefthander retired all 21 batters she faced to throw her second Perfect Game in a row. It also was her third, as she threw a combined Perfect Game in the Quarter Final.

In the Final, Voortman struckout sixteen batters, Merkx struckout fourteen.
