After completion of this season, Smeets, who played for Corendon Kinheim, retired as player.
Shortly thereafter, he was named Head Coach of RCH-Pinguïns, which is playing in the so-called 'Overgangsklasse', one division below the big league.
After starting his baseball career with ABC in Amsterdam and playing for TIW-Survivors in Diemen, Smeets made his big league-debut playing for Amsterdam Pirates in 1999.
After having played in seven seasons (1999-2005) for Amsterdam, Smeets added five more seasons at Corendon Kinheim, with whom he won the Dutch championship-title twice.
This year, Smeets made his coaching debut, being the Bullpen Coach in the staff of Manager Jim Stoeckel for the Dutch National Baseball Team.
Smeets was one of the participants in the first NOC*NSF certified course for Coaching, qualification 4, in which (former) national team players are being educated to become coach at the highest level.
In 2000, Smeets made his debut in the Dutch National Baseball Team.
He then returned to the national team in 2003 and 2005 and became a regular member in 2006, then retired from the national squad early 2009.
Hans Meijer, the executive director of the KNBSB, is happy with the coming of Smeets.
,,I'm delighted that we can fill in this important marketingposition with Tjerk Smeets'', Meijer said in the press release.
,,The new sports BeeBall and G-baseball now be put professionally into the market. With his appointment finding sponsors and partners for our baseball and softball programs will get the attention that is needed for this'', Meijer added.
