Curt Smith signs new contract
Nederlands
PHOENIX, Arizona (USA) - Curt Smith has a new club for the 2012 season, as he signed a Minor League-contract with the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, March 14. The first baseman of the Dutch Baseball Team was a free agent, but is having a fine tournament in the World Baseball Classic so far.

In October 2011, Smith played a good tournament for the Dutch Team, participating in the World Cup in Panama. The Dutch Team defeated Cuba twice during that event, including in the final, to become the World Champion. Smith was named Most Valuable Player of the event and his accomplisments earned him a contract with the Florida Marlins for 2012.

Following the 2009 World Baseball Classic, Dutch pitchers Sidney Ponson (Kansas City Royals) and Leon Boyd (Toronto Blue Jays) also signed professional contracts due to their accomplisments during the event.

Curt Smith made his professional debut in 2008 playing for the Rookie League and Single-A teams of the St. Louis Cardinals. Smith was with the 'Cards' through 2010 and reached Double-A in 2009 and 2010.

In 2011, Smith played for Lincoln Saltdogs in an Independent League, hitting .335 with 46 runs scored, 48 RBI's and four homeruns.

Last year, he played for Jacksonville Suns, the Double-A team of the Marlins, which were then just renamed in Miami Marlins. The 26-year old Smith played in 96 games, hit .261 with 70 basehits, 41 runs scored, 48 runs batted in and nine homeruns.
