Neptunus opens European Cup with confortable victory
Nederlands
ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Dutch champion Curaçao Neptunus opened its European Cup Tournament on Tuesday-evening (June 2) with a comfortable 12-0 shutout-victory vs. KNTU Elizavetgrad from the Ukraine.

Playing its tournament in front of a home crowd in Rotterdam, Neptunus struck early, scoring seven runs in the first two innings. Neptunus collected 12 basehits, including four by Dwayne Kemp, who went 4-for-4 and scored three runs.

Three Neptunus-pitchers gave up only two basehits to the Ukrainian squad.

Earlier in the day, Templiers Sénart (France) surprised with a 2-0 win vs. Draci Brno (Czech Republic). Leonel Cespedes struckout eight batters and gave up only three hits in eight innings. The French squad scored both runs in the second inning, thanks to singles by Felix Brown and Christopher Morel.

In the afternoon, Rimini Pirates (Italy) won 8-3 vs. Heidenheim Heideköpfe (Germany) on 10 basehits. The Germans took an 1-0 lead in the first inning, but then Rimini turned the game its way by scoring three runs in the second at bat. The Italians took more distance via a 4-run rally in the fifth inning. Winning pitcher José Escalona struckout seven batters in six innings.

(June 2)

On a rainy and windy evening, Neptunus decided the game more or less in the first at bat, scoring four runs with two outs off of starting pitcher Serhiy Shtapura. With one out, Dwayne Kemp singled and Raily Legito walked. The two advanced on a grounder, then scored on a following single by Rien Vernooij. After Vernooij had stolen second base, he scored moments later on a single by Christian Diaz, who then scored himself on a single by Urving Kemp.

Three runs were added in the second inning. Shaldimar Daantji led off with a single and scored when Stijn van der Meer followed with a double. Next, Dwayne Kemp homered to make it 7-0.

After the home team was retired in order in the third inning, it rallied for five runs in the fourth at bat. The bases got loaded when Stijn van der Meer reached on an error, Dwayne Kemp singled and (with one out) Gianison Boekhoudt walked. Rien Vernooij then again delivered a 2-run single and that was followed by a 2-run triple by Christian Diaz. A single by Urving Kemp then accounted for the next run and lifted the lead to 12-0.

Remarkable enough, Neptunus was then held scoreless in the fifth and sixth inning by reliever Mykola Liakhovetsky, who had taken over the pitching in the fourth. After Neptunus had increased its lead to 12-0, Liakhovetsky took over and walked Benjamin Dille, but struckout the next two batters to end the inning. In the fifth, he gave up the fourth basehit to Dwayne Kemp, but then was supported with a double play. In the sixth, he retired the side, but Neptunus had taken a big enough lead to end the game via the mercy-rule.

Diegomar Markwell started for Neptunus. In the first inning, he hit lead-off hitter Illia Velikii with a pitch, but then picked him off first base moments later. The lefthander then retired the next thirteen batters in a row, including six strikeouts. In the fifth, with two outs, he hit Dmytro Nelipa with a pitch, then his No-Hitter ended when Roman Boiko and Oleksandr Mamontow both singled to load the bases. But Markwell kept the shutout intact, as a grounder ended the at bat.

In the sixth inning, Jorian van Acker took over and retired the side, as did Floris Timmer in the seventh inning.
