Amsterdam Pirates opens European Cup with convincing win

CHARTRES (France) -
L&D Amsterdam Pirates has begun the European Cup Tournament in France with a convincing 11-1 victory against German champion Solingen Alligators.
In Chartres, near Paris, the Dutch vice-champion collected 14 basehits, including four by Linoy Croes and three by Nick Urbanus, who homered.
Also today, Cupholder T&A San Marino opened with a 5-2 victory vs. UnipolSai Bologna (Italy).
Bologna led 2-0 after two innings, but then San Marino rallied for four runs in the fourth inning.
Later in the afternoon, host PUC Paris (France) won 14-1 vs. Brest Zubrs (Belarus).
The French team led only 2-0 after five innings, then rallied for five runs in the sixth and added seven more in the seventh at bat.

At the Gellainville-field in Chartres, Kevin Heijstek started for Amsterdam and struckout five batters in five innings, giving up only four basehits.
Hereafter, Tom de Blok and Robin Schel made their European Cup-debut, each pitching two innings.
De Blok struckout three batters, Schel struckout four.
Amsterdam struck with three runs in the first inning off of starter Chris Mezger, who played one season in the Dutch big league in the past.
Roelie Henrique led off the game with an infield-hit, then stole second.
Michael Duursma then walked and the two runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Urbanus.
The two then scored when Kenny Berkenbosch followed with a triple.
Moments later, Berkenbosch scored the third run on a grounder by Remco Draijer.
The next run was added in the third at bat when Urbanus led off with a single, stole second base, moved on a flyout and scored on a grounder by Draijer.
In the fifth inning, Amsterdam scored its fifth run.
Urbanus led off with a triple and scored on a following grounder by Berkenbosch.
Hereafter, Draijer singled and Bas Nooij walked.
After a strikeout, the bases got loaded when Rashid Gerard was hit by a pitch, but then three runners were left behind.
In the bottom of the 5th inning, Solingen scored what would be its lone run.
Markus Stryczek reached on an error, advanced on a wild pitch and a force play-grounder, then scored on a single by David Selsemeyer.
When the eighth inning began, Amsterdam was still leading 5-1, but then rallied for five more runs.
Jesse Aussems led off with a single and Rashid Gerard walked, then the bases got loaded when Linoy Croes reached on a bunt-single.
A single by Roelie Henrique then accounted for two runs, a force play-grounder by Michael Duursma brought in the next run and then Nick Urbanus belted a 2-run homerun to make it 10-1.
In the ninth, Amsterdam scored its eleventh run thanks to the fourth basehit in the game by Linoy Croes.
