Important victory Amsterdam Pirates vs. San Marino

PARIS (France) - On Day 2 of the European Cup Tournament in France, L&D Amsterdam Pirates registered an important victory on Wednesday-afternoon (June 3) against T&A San Marino, last years winner of the European Champions Cup.

Amsterdam won 6-0 behind the strong pitching of Rob Cordemans, who went the distance.

In the afternoon, UnipolSai Bologna (Italy) shutout Brest Zubrs (Belarus) 15-0 to win its first game. The Italians rallied for six runs in the first and seven in the fifth inning. Bologna collected 14 hits, including three by Guillermo Rodriguez. Starting pitcher Luca Panerati struckout eight batters and gave up no hits in four innings, but then was relieved, meaning he ended up with a no-decision.

Host PUC Paris (France) was beaten 17-4 by Solingen Alligators (Germany), which also won its first game. Solingen collected 16 basehits, including four by Tanner Leighton, who homered twice (one grand slam) and batted in seven runs.

After being retired in order by starter Carlos Teran, Amsterdam opened the score in the second at bat. Kenny Berkenbosch led off with a single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Remco Draijer and an error on a grounder by Bas Nooij, then scored when Jesse Aussems grounded out.

Amsterdam then added its second run in the third inning. Linoy Croes led off with a single, moved on a sac-bunt by Roelie Henrique, then scored when Michael Duursma delivered a runscoring single. Walks for Nick Urbanus and Kenny Berkenbosch then loaded the bases. But the three runners were left behind when Remco Draijer flied out and Bas Nooij struckout.

Amsterdam made it a 3-0 score in the fourth. Jesse Aussems led off with a single and advanced on another successful sac-bunt, this time by Rashid Gerard to get into scoring position. Hereafter, Linoy Croes struckout, but reached on a wild pitch that brought Aussems to third base. Next, Roelie Henrique grounded out to short, which brought in Aussems, but also led to a double play. Croes had advanced to second base on the grounder, but then was eliminated after overrunning it, however, the run already had scored.

For San Marino, lead-off hitter Jack Santora reached base in the first inning via a strikeout-wild pitch, then Jairo Ramos singled with two outs, but was forced out to end the inning. Hereafter, Rob Cordemans retired eight batters in a row.

Trailing 3-0, San Marino got into scoring position in the top of the fifth inning. Joe Persichina led off with a single, then Francesco Imperiali walked. Next, Simone Albanese lined the ball back to Cordemans, who was able to complete a double play at first base. A grounder then ended the at bat.

Beginning with the line drive, Cordemans retired eight of the nine batters he faced throught the seventh inning.

Amsterdam left two runners behind in the sixth inning, then another runner in the seventh, but then dealt the decisive blow in the bottom of the eighth inning by scoring three more runs.

Now facing reliever Yovany D'Amico, Remco Draijer led off with a walk and stole second base, then Bas Nooij also walked. Hereafter, Darwin Cubillan took over the pitching and saw the runners advance on a sac-bunt by Jesse Aussems. Rashid Gerard followed with a runscoring single, then the bases got loaded when Linoy Croes walked. Moments later, Roelie Henrique delivered a 2-run single that lifted the lead to 6-0.

In the top of the ninth, Cordemans only saw veteran Mario Chiarini reached via a walk, but also got three grounders to end the game.
