Markwell wins 100th game, as Neptunus beats Pioniers
Nederlands
HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - Veteran lefthander Diegomar Markwell struckout five batters and gave up five hits in the six innings he pitched on Thursday-evening (May 2). He left the mound with Neptunus leading 7-3 and as the Rotterdam-squad hold onto the lead, Markwell was credited with his fourth win of the season. But he also reached a milestone, as tonight was his 100th career victory in the Dutch big league.

Markwell made his debut in the highest division in 2004 playing for Sparta-Feyenoord. In his rookie season, he won three games. Since 2005, he throws for Neptunus.

(May 7)

Neptunus dominated the game from the beginning, scoring five runs in the first four innings.

In the first at bat, Gyenuar Lopez led off with a double off of Ricardo Hernandez Sanchez, who suffered his first loss of the season. Lopez moved on a grounder by Benjamin Dille, then scored on sac-fly by Raily Legito.

Two runs were added in the second inning. With one out, Rien Vernooij singled, then an error was made on a force play-grounder by Urving Kemp. Next, Adrian Anthony singled, but Vernooij was thrown out at the plate trying to score. The runners advanced to second and third base on the throw, then both scored on a following single by Shaldimar Daantji.

In the bottom of the second inning, Pioniers scored its first run. Vince Rooi led off with a walk, then moved to third base when Quintin De Cuba reached on an error. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Dirksen, which ended in a double play, as De Cuba was also eliminated.

Neptunus got the run back in the third when, with two outs, Dwayne Kemp doubled and Rien Vernooij tripled.

In the fourth, Daantji tripled with one out and scored on a grounder by Dille to make it a 5-1 score.

Neptunus was retired in order in the fifth, but then added two more runs in the sixth. With two outs, Daantji singled and Lopez walked, then both scored on a double by Dille.

Trailing 7-1, Pioniers got a little bit closer scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The bases got loaded when Dirk van 't Klooster, Vince Rooi and Quintin De Cuba all singled. A sac-fly by Kevin Dirksen and single by Kevin Weijgertse then brought in the runs, but Diegomar Markwell avoided more runs by striking out the next two batters to end the inning.

Three relievers then held Pioniers scoreless in the next three innings. Kevin Kelly walked two batters in the seventh inning. But the second of those also ended in the third out, as runner Daniel Fernandes tried to advance to third base when the fourth ball ended in a passed ball. But he was thrown out. Jorian van Acker retired the side in the eighth, then Loek van Mil gave up two hits in the ninth, but Pioniers left the runners at first and third base.

Neptunus scored its final run in the ninth. Rien Vernooij led off with a single and went on to score on a 2-out basesloaded single by Benjamin Dille, but then Neptunus left the other three runners behind.
