Dutch Team opens World Port Tournament with 12th inning win
Nederlands
ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - The Netherlands Baseball Team opened the 15th edition of the World Port Tournament Baseball on Saturday-evening (July 18) with a 6-5 victory in 12 innings after an almost 4-hour marathon against Taiwan.

In the afternoon, Japan won 12-2 vs. Curaçao.

Before the start of the evening game, former Organizing Committee President Gerard Vaandrager, OC-member Frans van Aalen and legendary player Hamilton Richardson were honored. Richardson never participated in a World Port Tournament, but he was an important player for Rotterdam-based Sparta in the Dutch big league in the sixties and seventies, as well as for the national baseball-team. Vaandrager and Van Aalen have been longtime OC-members since the first event in 1985. The three received the Honorary WPT-medallion.

Taiwan had a productive start, scoring four runs in four innings off of veteran pitcher Rob Cordemans.

The Dutch offense was less productive initially and scored runs only in the second and fifth at bat. In the second, rookie Dudley Leonora batted in a run, in the fifth a sacrifice fly by Danny Rombley accounted for the second run.

In the bottom of the ninth, still leading 4-2, Taiwan was one out away from victory, but then Kevin Moesquit belted a 2-run homerun to tie the score and send the game into extra innings.

From the eleventh inning on, the tie-break rule was in use. Both teams scored in the eleventh, then the decision fell in the twelfth. After Taiwan had stranded runners on second and third base, the Dutch Team struck moments later. Tie-break runner Gilmer Lampe then scored on a sacrifice fly by Danny Rombley.
