On Sunday, during the home game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Curaçao-born short stop wanted to field a hard grounder by Evan Longoria in the third inning.
While doing so, he hurt his left thumb.
After making the play, Simmons, who showed he had some pain, made a high throw to first base, but Longoria had reached on an infield-hit.
Simmons was taken out of the game immediately.
During an MRI on Monday, it was revealed that Simmons had a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb and he will need surgery.
With that, the Dutch infielder will be out for at least two months, and maybe three.
Simmons is the latest injured player for the Angels, who also has three starting pitchers on the disabled list.
Three days ago, it was announced that pitching ace Garrett Richards probably will need Tommy John-surgery.
Two relievers and an outfielder are also currently sidelined with injuries.
Simmons has not yet been placed on the disabled list yet by the Angels.
Simmons came to the Angels last November in a trade with the Atlanta Braves.
