Netherlands Under-23 Team shuts out Ukraine on one basehit
Nederlands

PRAGUE (Czech Rep.) - The Netherlands Under-23 Team began the round for fifth through eighth place of the U23 European Championship on Saturday (August 10) with a rain-shortened, 4-inning, 5-0 shutout-win against Ukraine.

The Orange Team recorded only one basehit in the four innings it played. The team scored five runs in the third inning on four walks, two sacrifice flies, one error and a 2-run double by Jeandro Tromp.

After four complete innings, the game was halted due to rain and later definitively cancelled. As the games during this event last seven instead of nine innings, a game is valid when four complete innings (or 3½ when the home team leads) are played.

In January, the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) announced that all Baseball World Cups will shift from nine to seven innings. The first to do so will be the U23 World Cup next year, then the U18 World Cup in 2021. The U12 World Cup will continue with six inning-games, while games at the Olympic Games and Premier12 will remain nine inning-games. When the score is tied after seven innings, extra innings will follow.

Due to the rain, the game between Great Britain and Croatia started fifty minutes later. It became an interesting game, as the score was tied at 4-4 after seven innings. With that, the game went into extra innings. From the eighth inning on, the game continued with the international tie-break rule, meaning an inning began with runners on first and second base. Both teams scored twice in the eighth inning. Great Britain won 7-6 in ten innings.

The Netherlands will close the Championship on Sunday against Croatia, while the British Team plays against Ukraine. Anything can still happen on Sunday, including a 3-way tie with the Netherlands finishing in fifth place, but there is also a scenario that the team can finish in eighth place.

Germany became the first team to reach the Final after winning its Semi-Final against Belgium with a 10-0 score in 4½ inning. On Saturday-evening, the Czech Republic and France face each other in the second Semi-Final.

The Netherlands was outhit 3-1 by Ukraine today. But in the end, it was the lone basehit that provided the Orange Team with a lead in the third inning.

Remarkably enough, the Netherlands was retired in order in both the first and second inning by Ukraine-starter Andrii Boiko. He struckout three batters in these at bats, including the first two in the first inning.

The Netherlands then had a successful third at bat. With only one basehit, the team was not being that productive itself, but five runs were scored. Boiko, who had thrown two fine innings, made a throwing error and also enountered problems with his control, as he walked four batters, before being relieved. Two sacrfifice flies then contributed to the scoring thereafter.

Tommy van de Sanden led off the at bat with a walk, then Boiko made a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Delano Selassa, which led to runners on second and third base. Both scored when Jeandro Tromp followed with a double. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Boiko walked Julian Rip and Oliver van der Wijst Severino. A run was scored when next batter Taylor Clemensia also walked. With the bases still loaded and no outs, Ihor Lukin took over the pitching. He saw the Dutch team add two more runs thanks to sacrifice flies by Koen Halderman and Jules Cremer, which lifted the score to 5-0.

The Netherlands got two more baserunners in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Delano Selassa was hit by a pitch, then Jeandro Tromp walked, but they were left behind, as two flyouts followed.

Aaron de Groot went the distance for the Netherlands. He retired the first five batters he faced. With two outs in the second inning, De Groot gave up singles to Kyrylo Rohach and Yehor Liubchenko, but then closed with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the third, with the Netherlands leading 5-0, Ukraine got on base again. Lead-off hitter Oleksii Savchenko reached on a throwing error. He was forced out on a grounder by Kostiantyn Chukhas, who then stole second base, but was left behind.

In the bottom of the fourth, Ukraine recorded its third basehit in the game, an one-out single by Vladyslav Kosenko. A flyout and groundout ended the inning.

Shortly thereafter, the game was halted due to rain. After a wating-period, it was decided not to continue due to the field conditions. And with that, the game officially ended, but was valid, as four innings were played.
