Amsterdam Pirates shuts out Twins Oosterhout in 4-hitter; L&D Support extends sponsorship
Nederlands

AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates shutout Twins Oosterhout 6-0 on Saturday (August 1) in the second game of their 3-game series.

Before today's game, the ceremonial first pitch was thrown by Joost de Jonge, the CEO of L&D Support, the main-sponsor of Amsterdam Pirates. The club announced that L&D Support has extended it sponsorship with the main baseball-team for two more years. L&D Support, which was founded by John Witte, is the main-sponsor of the Amsterdam Pirates baseball-team since 2008. In 2015, the cooperation was extended through 2020. With L&D Support as sponsor, Amsterdam Pirates captured the Championship-title in 2008, 2011 and 2019. In that span, the team also won the European Champions Cup in 2016.

The reigning champion opened the series on Thursday-evening with a big 17-5 victory.

In today's game, the Twins-offense was limited to only four basehits by three pitchers.

Amsterdam Pirates collected ten basehits, including three by Kalian Sams. Two of them were homeruns and Sams now has hit four homeruns in the first five games of the season. In the opener on Thursday, it was Gilmer Lampe who hit two homeruns for Pirates. Lampe is not with the team this weekend, as he is on paternity leave.

(August 1)

Amsterdam Pirates was held scoreless in the first two innings by Twins-starter Koen Postelmans, but then struck in the third at bat.

In the first inning, Amsterdam got two baserunners with two outs when Denzel Richardson walked and Kalian Sams singled, but a force play ended the at bat. In the second inning, Rashid Gerard led off with a single, but was then caught stealing in a double play while batter Niels van Weert struckout.

The reigning champion then rallied for four runs with one out in the third inning. Roelie Henrique then reached on an infield-hit and Delano Selassa also singled. Both scored when Denzel Richardson followed with a double and next batter Kalian Sams drilled the ball over the fence in rightfield for a 2-run homerun to make it a 4-0 score.

Pirates left a runner behind on second base in the fourth inning. With two outs, Raydley Legito reached on an infield-hit which was his first big league-basehit. He stole second base, but then was left behind. With centerfielder Gilmer Lampe out of the line-up today, Pirates adjusted its outfield-alignment. Denzel Richardson, who had been the designated hitter in the previous four games, played in rightfield, while rightfielder Kalian Sams moved to centerfield. The slightly injured Delano Selassa, who was the short stop in the first three games and was used as a pinch-hitter/designated hitter in Thursday's opener, was the DH today. That left the short stop-position open. Roelie Henrique played at short on Thursday, but returned to leftfield today, where he also played in the first three games. And so, rookie Raydley Legito, who made his debut a week ago playing one inning in defense, made his first start at short today.

In the fifth inning, Pirates added two more runs. Delano Selassa led off with a double, then scored with one out when Kalian Sams belted his second homerun of the day. When next batter Kenny Berkenbosch singled, Twins went to the bullpen. Pastor Enrique Martínez Chavez took over and held Pirates scoreless and hitless in the 1 1/3 inning he pitched, before being relieved by Finn Kops in the sixth inning.

Kops also didn't allow basehits or runs, but got several baserunners. With one out in the seventh, he got the bases loaded when he walked Kenny Berkenbosch, Rashid Gerard and Niels van Weert. Next batter Max Clarijs then opted to hit on the first pitch he saw and grounded into an inning-ending double play. Kops retired the side in the eighth.

Twins collected only four basehits. The first was hit by Tyriq Kemp, who led off the game with a single, but later stranded on second base. Twins also left a runner behind on second base in the second inning. The team then got the bases loaded off of starter Juan Carlos Sulbaran in the fourth. With two outs, Ruendrick Piternella walked, Brian Biezen was hit by a pitch and Diamond Silberie reached on an infield-hit. A grounder ended the at bat.

Donny Breek took from Sulbaran in the seventh and walked a batter with two outs. In the eighth, he gave up an one-out single to Jason Halman and was relieved by Matz Schutte. He retired the next two batters and also retired the side in the ninth.
