However, as you know, the baseball-season is on hold, as all regular season-games have been annuled through June 9 because of measures taken against the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. New dates have not yet been announced. (© Photo: Henk Seppen) From March 12 on, the Government of the Netherlands regularly announced several (stricter) measures due to the coronavirus. The most recent announcement was made on Tuesday, April 21 when earlier measures were extended through May 19, while gatherings and events are prohibited though September 1. Earlier, the Royal Netherlands Baseball and Softball Assocation (KNBSB) announced that it will give teams a three-week preparation period when it is allowed to return to the fields and open the season. With that, the KNBSB announced on Wednesday (April 29) that it had annulled all regular season-games through June 9. On Saturday, we would have had a remarkable debut amongst game-officials. At the game between HCAW and L&D Amsterdam Pirates in Bussum, Stenar van Groningen Schinkel was to made his debut as Official Scorer. And that's peculiar, as Van Groningen Schinkel also is an active big league-umpire. On Sunday, he was the 3B Umpire in Amersfoort in the game between Quick Amersfoort and Silicon Storks. Through the years, several former big league umpires (baseball/softball) became an official scorer after they had ended their umpiring career. Amongst them are Dennis Duin, Pieter van der Ploeg, Henk Wolffenbuttel and Dries de Zwaan. However, when Van Groningen Schinkel makes his scoring-debut, it will not be unique, as the reversed happened some years ago when an official scorer also was an umpire in the highest league. And not only in the same season, but in the same game! During the 2015 season, Ben Goorts was the play-by-play scorer during a big league softball-game when the home plate-umpire fell ill. As Goorts also is an umpire, the 1B Umpire took over behind the plate, Goorts entered the field and the official scorer also entered the data for the play-by-play. Van Groningen Schinkel was the second new Official Scorer to make his debut this season. On April 23, Remko Helms would have made his debut. But the two rookie-scorers will have to wait a little bit longer to make their debut. Baseball and softball will be back. But only when health and safety conditions for everyone involved, players, coaches, game-officials, fans, team- and club-staffmembers, etc. are good enough to do so.
