Tonight was opening night of Round 8 in Dutch big league
Nederlands
ROTTERDAM / AMERSFOORT / ROSMALEN (Neth.) -
Tonight (Thurday, June 4) was the scheduled opening night of the eighth 3-game series of the 2020 regular season in the Dutch big league.
But as you know, the baseball-season is currently on hold, as all regular season-games have been annuled through June 30 because of measures taken against the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
New dates have not yet been announced.
From March 12 on, the Government of the Netherlands regularly announced several (strict) measures due to the coronavirus.
In a following update on May 6, a little more freedom was announced, but it was also said that official games and competitions remain prohibited through September 1.
From June 1 on, some of the measures were loosened up somewhat, including opening (parts of) restaurants, terraces, cinemas, theaters and schools.
From July 1, some indoor sports-activities also will be permitted again.
The lastest update was on Wednesday-evening (June 3).
On May 12, the Royal Netherlands Baseball and Softball Association (KNBSB) announced that it has annuled all official regular season games in all baseball/softball leagues through Tuesday, June 30.
The KNBSB is in talks with the NOC*NSF (Netherlands Olympic Committee/Netherlands Sports Federations) regarding options how to continue, as it is hoped a new season can still be played this year.
In the eight round in the Dutch big league, only six of the eight teams would get into action.
Dutch reigning champion L&D Amsterdam Pirates and Holland Series-loser Curaçao Neptunus should have been in Ostrava (Czech Republic) this week to participate in the European Champions Cup-Tournament.
Today was to be the third day of action of the event, which would end with the Final coming Saturday.
The tournament was cancelled on April 1 by the European Baseball Confederation (CEB) due to the coronavirus.
Today (Thurday), for the first time this season, it was rainy thoughout the country on a game-day.
On a cloudy day, there was some steady rain throughout the afternoon.
For tonight's scheduled games, that might have resulted in a later game-starts, in-game rain-delays or even cancellations in Rotterdam, Amersfoort and Rosmalen.
Initially, it was expected that the rain would stop around 5:30 PM in Rotterdam, which would have been in time for the game to start two hours later (depending on the field-conditions).
However, it kept on raining thereafter and there were moderate showers through 7:30 PM (which was game-time).
At Amersfoort and Rosmalen, there were some moderate rainshowers around 6 PM, which continued thereafter.
At all three locations, more light to moderate rain was expected throughout the evening.
Silicon Storks was to play a home-game against Hoofddorp Pioniers in Rotterdam at the site of Neptunus.
In Rosmalen, Twins Oosterhout was to play at home at the site of Gryphons against HCAW.
The only team to play at home tonight on its home-site was Quick Amersfoort, which was to host DSS/Kinheim.
Whether or not it would have been possible to play the three games we will never know, but looking at the weather conditions towards game-time (and before and after that), we probably would have had the first rainouts of the season tonight.
Beneath are the games that were scheduled to be played tonight with the assignments of the game-officials.
We don't know when, but baseball and softball of course will be back in the Netherlands!
Of course only when it is safe to do so for everyone involved.
Until then, take care and stay safe!
