(Story by Marco Stoovelaar; Photo by Henk Seppen) Dutch big league was to enter fourth week tonight Nederlands HOOFDDORP / AMERSFOORT / HAARLEM / ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Tonight (Thursday, May 7), the fourth round was scheduled to open in the Dutch big league regular season. Tomorrow, the sixth round of games was scheduled to begin in the second highest league ('Overgangsklasse'), which had its original Opening Night on April 3. The Dutch big league had its first games planned on April 16. However, as you know, the baseball-season is on hold, as all regular season-games have been annuled through June 9 because of measures taken against the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. New dates have not yet been announced. (© Photo: Henk Seppen) From March 12 on, the Government of the Netherlands regularly announced several (stricter) measures due to the coronavirus. On Tuesday, April 21, the measures were extended through May 19, while gatherings and events are prohibited though September 1. Earlier, the Royal Netherlands Baseball and Softball Assocation (KNBSB) announced that it will give teams a three-week preparation period when it is allowed to return to the fields and open the season. With that, the KNBSB announced on Wednesday (April 29) that it had annulled all regular season-games through June 9. On Wednesday (May 6), there was another update regarding the measures and a little more freedom was announced then by the Government. Some non-contact sports, such as tennis, golf or swimming could return. Also, youth U18 could perform in practice sessions again, but cannot play games. It was also announced that contact-sports will not be permitted through September 1. What that means for the baseball and softball-season is not clear yet at this moment. On April 12, the professional baseball-season in Taiwan opened with games played in empty stadiums. On May 5, the first games were played in the professional baseball-league in South Korea, also in empty stadiums. On Wednesday, it was announced that the first specators will be allowed to games in Taiwan (maximum 1,000 per game). We don't know when yet, but baseball and softball of course also will be back in the Netherlands! When it is safe to do so. Until then, take care and stay safe!
