One run enough for HCAW to win against DSS/Kinheim
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - HCAW needed only one run on Saturday (August 8) to record its second consecutive shutout against DSS/Kinheim, winning 1-0.

On Thursday-evening, HCAW was outhit, but opened the 3-game series against the Haarlem-team with a 3-0 shutout-win.

Today, in a quick-paced game, the lone run was scored in the ninth inning.

HCAW got six basehits in the game, including two by Berend Ruben. DSS/Kinheim recorded only two basehits off of two pitchers.

Today was the hottest August 8 ever recorded in the Netherlands since weather measurements were first recorded in 1901. At De Bilt, where the measurements are recorded, it was 33 degrees Celsius (91,4 F). That broke the old record, which was 32,9 (91,2) and set in 1975.

(August 8)

Not much happened in the first eight innings of this game. The lone inning that accounted for the win was the ninth, as it was in that at bat that HCAW scored the lone run in this game.

It was a pitching-duel between Glenn Wassink (DSS/Kinheim) and Dennis Burgersdijk (HCAW). Wassink got only three runners in scoring position in the seven innings he pitched. Burgersdijk also got only three runners in scoring position in the first seven innings he threw for HCAW, then two more in the eighth, but he kept DSS/Kinheim scoreless.

DSS/Kinheim got its first runner in scoring position in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Aidan Finnegan singled and Donny Kuijper walked, but a force play ended the at bat.

DSS/Kinheim was retired in order in the third, saw HCAW turn a double play in the fourth and left a runner behind on first base in the fitth. In the sixth at bat, the Haarlem-team got its next runner in scoring position. Lead-off hitter Thomas Bos reached on an error and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Jochem Koedijk, but then was left behind.

In the top of the eighth, the HCAW-defense committed two errors, but avoided giving up runs. Lead-off hitter and pinch-hitter Daan Terstall reached on an error, then another error was made on a following sacrifice bunt by Bram Blokker. Hereafter, a bunt by Thomas Bos ended in a force out at third base. Another force out and a flyout followed.

For HCAW, Berend Ruben singled with two outs in the first inning, but hereafter the DSS/Kinheim-defense retired the next seven batters in a row. In the top of the fourth, Linoy Croes led off with a double, but then was eliminated while trying to steal third base. With two outs, Arthur Bonevacia walked, but he also was caught stealing.

In the seventh inning, HCAW came close to open the score. Berend Ruben led off with a triple. For Ruben, this was his first triple since hitting one on May 28, 2017 in the second inning, while playing for UVV against Amsterdam Pirates. Back then, Linoy Croes, Patrick Bok and Dennis Burgersdijk, his current teammates at HCAW, played for Pirates. With Ruben on third base, Arthur Bonevacia walked. Hereafter, Ruben tried to score on a grounder towards second base by Kevin Dirksen, but was eliminated at the plate. With two runners on base, two flyouts ended the at bat.

In the eighth, off of new pitcher Robyn Clara, HCAW again got its lead-off hitter on base. Raibiëntly Mercalina opened with a walk, but was caught stealing shortly thereafter. Next batter Pascal Zegwaard walked, stole second base and moved to third base on a grounder, but was left behind.

With one out in the top of the ninth, Arthur Bonevacia walked, then moved into scoring position on a single by Kevin Dirksen. A pinch-runner was then inserted at second base for Bonevacia. He was replaced by Luuk ter Beek, who was the starting pitcher in Thursday's game. Clara struckout the next batter, but then gave up a single to Leandro Anasagasti, who was his teammate last season at DSS. Ter Beek was waved home from second base and scored what would be the lone run in the game. The inning ended when Anasagasti was caught stealing.

Arij Fransen, who saw his professional Minor League-season in the organization of the Cincinnati Reds being cancelled, closed the game for HCAW by pitching the bottom of the ninth. He gave up a lead-off single to Tino van Erk, but his pinch-runner Tijmen Nagel was forced out on a bunt by Matis Crouwel. A strikeout and a foul-out followed to end the inning and the game.
