Amsterdam Pirates completes sweep vs. Quick Amersfoort with convincing win

AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates was very productive in the three middle innings and recorded a convincing 15-3 win in 6½ inning to complete a 3-game sweep against Quick Amersfoort on Sunday (August 9).

On Thursday, Amsterdam Pirates opened with a 10-2 victory. Leading only 4-2, Pirates secured the win with a 6-run rally in the seventh inning on a sunny evening.

On Saturday, Amsterdam Pirates trailed after six innings, then again was productive in the seventh to turn the second game around and win 4-1.

Today, Pirates had another rally that decided the game. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the home-team broke a 3-3 tie with an 8-run rally in the fourth inning, then added four more runs in the sixth. With that, a 10-run difference was reached and so, the game ended after 6½ inning via the mercy-rule.

Amsterdam Pirates collected eleven basehits with four players hitting two. All nine starting players scored at least once.

For the second day in a row, a weather record was broken. Today was the hottest August 9 in the Netherlands since weather measurements were first recorded in 1901. The average temperature today was 32,6 degrees Celsius (90,7 F). The previous record was 32,5 C (90,5 F) and that was set in 2004.

In today's game, Quick Amersfoort led 3-1 halfway the third inning, but then Amsterdam Pirates came alongside. Pirates then rallied for eight runs in the fourth to take a comfortable lead and added four more runs later in the game.

Besides collecting eleven basehits, Amsterdam Pirates also got ten batters on base with a walk. In the 3-game series, the pitching of Quick Amersfoort issued 32 walks and also hit three batters.

Despite reaching base frequently, it was Quick Amersfoort that opened the score and led 3-1 halfway the third inning. The team opened the score off of starter Naut Kragt with two outs in the second inning. Rowan van Hoek then singled and Jules Cremer followed with a triple, then scored himself when next batter Alberto Enrique Ostos delivered a single. Kragt then walked Amir Laclé, but a flyout ended the at bat.

Amsterdam Pirates got one run back in its second at bat off of starter Colin van Laar. With one out, the lefthander walked Kenny Berkenbosch, but he was forced out on a grounder by Delano Selassa. He moved to third base on a single by Rashid Gerard, then scored when Niels van Weert also singled. A double steal put runners on second and third base, but they were left behind, as Van Laar by striking out rookie Jair van Borkulo.

In the top of the third, Quick scored its next run. Rachid Engelhardt led off with a single. With one out, he moved to third base when an error followed a single by Tijmen Takke and then scored on a single by Taylor Clemensia. The bases got loaded when Kragt walked Rowan van Hoek. But he then struckout Jules Cremer and a grounder ended the inning, meaing the three runners were left behind.

In the bottom of the third, Pirates came alongside. Roelie Henrique led off with a single, stole second base and reached third on a wild pitch. After next batter Sharlon Schoop walked, Gilmer Lampe delivered a runscoring single. With one out, Schoop scored the tying run on a single by Kenny Berkenbosch. The inning ended when Delano Selassa grounded into a double play, but it had become a new ball game.

From the fourth inning on, the game turned around in favor of Amsterdam Pirates.

With one out in the top of the fourth, Denzel Brooks doubled for Quick. Next batter Rachid Engelhardt grounded out and when Brooks tried to advance to third base, he was also eliminated to complete a double play.

Pirates then struck with an 8-run rally in the bottom of the fourth off of three pitchers. Fourteen batters stepped up to the plate and the first nine reached base safely. It all began with a lead-off single by Rashid Gerard, then Niels van Weert walked. Jair van Borkulo followed with a runscoring single that put Pirates ahead, 4-3. Next, Van Laar made a throwing error on a grounder by Roelie Henrique, which led to the next two runs. The bases then got loaded when Sharlon Schoop walked and Gilmer Lampe singled. A pitching change followed and Jasper Popken took over for Van Laar. He walked Denzel Richardson, which of course brought in a run, then gave up a runscoring single to Kenny Berkenbosch. An error on a force play-grounder by Delano Selassa produced the next run and with that, nine batters in a row had reached base. A wild pitch enabled Richardson to score, before Rashid Gerard flied out, which was the first out in the inning. Hereafter, a single by Niels van Weert produced the eighth run in the at bat. With two outs, the bases were loaded again when Roelie Henrique walked and that brought in another pitcher. Jan-Willem Geerts took the mound and he got an inning-ending force out. Three runners were left behind, but Pirates now led comfortably with an 11-3 score.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Pirates added four runs in the sixth to reach a 10-run difference. New pitcher Gilian Wernet got the bases loaded quickly, as he hit lead-off hitter Rashid Gerard, then walked Niels van Weert and Jair van Borkulo. Wernet then also issued a runscoring walk to Roelie Henrique and was relieved by rookie Stijn Bruins Slot. He saw an error being made on a possible double play-grounder by Sharlon Schoop, which led to two more runs. With one out, a single by Denzel Richardson lifted the lead to 15-3.

In the top of the seventh, Matz Schutte closed for Pirates. He walked Rachid Engelhardt with one out, but he was forced out. A grounder then ended the game via the mercy-rule.
