DSS/Kinheim turns game against HCAW around in final innings
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - DSS/Kinheim led, then trailed, but turned the game around in the eighth and ninth inning to close the 3-game series against HCAW on Sunday (August 9) with an 11-7 win.

On Thursday-evening, HCAW was outhit, but opened the series with a 3-0 shutout-win. On Saturday, one run was enough for HCAW to win 1-0. The run was scored in the ninth inning.

Today, DSS/Kinheim took an early 4-0 lead, but trailed 7-6 after seven innings. The team then scored five runs in the next two at bats to re-take the lead.

DSS/Kinheim was outhit 14-12 in a game that also saw nine errors, five by HCAW, four by the Haarlem-team.

Kevin Nieveld batted in three runs for DSS/Kinheim, while Jochem Koedijk scored three. For HCAW, Arthur Bonevacia had four basehits and Arthur Lugtmeijer three.

For the second day in a row, a weather record was broken. Today was the hottest August 9 in the Netherlands since weather measurements were first recorded in 1901. The average temperature today was 32,6 degrees Celsius (90,7 F). The previous record was 32,5 C (90,5 F) and that was set in 2004.

(August 9)

DSS/Kinheim was off to a good start, scoring three runs in the first inning and leading 5-1 halfway the fourth inning. HCAW then rallied for six runs and led 7-6 after seven innings. In the final two at bats of the game, DSS/Kinheim scored five runs to turn the game around again in its favor.

In the top of the first inning, DSS/Kinheim took a quick 3-0 lead off of starting pitcher Nick Keur. With one out, Jochem Koedijk walked and with two outs, Tino van Erk singled. Both scored when Kevin Nieveld followed with a double. Nieveld then scored himself on a single by Aidan Finnegan, before Keur closed with a strikeout.

After Keur had struckout the side in the second inning, DSS/Kinheim added a run in the third. With one out, Jeldwin Orman (fielder's choice) reached second base safely when an error was made during his steal-atttempt. He then advanced on a single by Tino van Erk and scored on a force play-grounder by Kevin Nieveld. On this play, Van Erk was forced out on second base and sustained a hamstring-injury. He was replaced by rookie Maris Crouwel in the bottom of the third inning.

HCAW got runners on first and third base with two outs in the first inning off of starter Steven van Groningen, but both were left behind. After stranding a runner on first base in the second inning, HCAW scored its first run in the third. With two outs and Linoy Croes (felder's choice) on first base, Arthur Bonevacia delivered a runscoring double. Hereafter, Kevin Dirksen walked, but HCAW left two runners behind.

In the top of the fourth, DSS/Kinheim lifted the lead to 5-1, but also left three runners behind. Nick Keur began with two strikeouts, but then gave up singles to Bram Blokker and Thomas Bos, which put runners at the corners. Blokker scored when a walk for Jochem Koedijk ended in a passed ball. Next, the bases got loaded when Keur also walked Jeldwin Orman, but a grounder ended the at bat.

Trailing 5-1, HCAW struck with a 6-run rally in the bottom of the fourth inning. Arthur Lugtmeijer led off with a single and with one out, the bases got loaded when Pascal Zegwaard walked and Jeandro Tromp singled. Bob van der Meer followed with a 2-run single, then the bases got loaded again when Linoy Croes walked. This time, Arthur Bonevacia delivered a runscoring single and that led to a pitching change. Rick Timmermans took over and got a force play-grounder from Kevin Dirksen. The ball was thrown to the plate to force out Van der Meer, but an error was made. With that, the score was now tied at 5-5 and the bases remained loaded. Hereafter, HCAW took the lead by scoring twice on a single by Berend Ruben.

DSS/Kinheim was held scoreless in the fifth and sixth inning by reliever Bobbie Gnade. The team got into scoring position in both innings, but runners stranded on second base.

DSS/Kinheim then narrowed the deficit to 7-6 in the seventh inning. With one out, Aidan Finnegan singled and when that was followed by an outfield-error, he was able to reach third base. Shortly thereafter, he scored on a double by Donny Kuijper, whose pinch-runner Mitchel Dautzenberg was left behind on second base.

In the eighth inning, DSS/Kinheim re-took the lead off of new pitcher Jasper Elfrink. He got traffic on the bases quickly when he gave up a lead-off single to Thomas Bos, which was followed by a bunt-single by Jochem Koedijk and a sacrifice bunt/fielder's choice by Jeldwin Orman. As a throwing error followed Orman's bunt, Bos scored the tying run and the other runners advanced. Moments later, Koedijk scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball. Later, Orman scored on a sacrifice fly by Aidan Finnegan, which made it a 9-7 lead for DSS/Kinheim.

The team added two more runs in the ninth off of Johannes Verroen Garcia. He walked lead-off hitter Nick Hofer, who advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Bram Blokker, then scored when that was followed by a throwing error. With two outs, Jochem Koedijk walked, moved on a passed ball and scored on a single by Jeldwin Orman.

After the 6-run rally in the fourth inning, HCAW was held scoreless in the remainder of the game.

The Bussum-squad got two baserunners in the sixth when Linoy Croes (lead-off) and Kevin Dirksen (with one out) singled, but they were left behind.

In the seventh, off of new pitcher Al Morales Gomes, HCAW got the bases loaded. Arthur Lugtmeijer led off with a single and with one out, Pascal Zegwaard reached on an error and Jeandro Tromp followed with a bunt-single. After an infield-fly accounted for the second out, veteran Morales closed by striking out Linoy Croes. In the eighth inning, Morales was supported with an inning-ending double play.

Leading 11-7, Robyn Clara threw the ninth inning for DSS/Kinheim. With two outs, Pascal Zegwaard reached on an error and Jeandro Tromp walked, but a force play then ended the inning and the game.

As Al Morales Gomes was pitching at the moment that DSS/Kinheim re-took the lead, he became the winning pitcher. With that, the 42-year old righthander got his first big league-win in just over nine years! On August 5, 2011, Morales was the winning pitcher pitching in relief for Amsterdam Pirates in a 4-2 win against Hoofddorp Pioniers. Back then, Linoy Croes and Kevin Dirksen also played for the losing team. Also in that game, Olav Steijger was the Home Plate Umpire, while his wife Linda Steijger today was one of the two Official Scorers.
