DSS/Kinheim wins Bottom-4 opener vs. Storks on walk-off wild pitch
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - DSS/Kinheim trailed, but won 4-3 on a walk-off wild pitch against Silicon Storks in its Bottom-4 Pool series-opener on a chilly Thursday-evening (September 10).

In the Bottom-4 Pool, the teams that finished in fifth through eighth place of the regular season play a round-robin competition. Each team plays a 3-game series against the others, meaning a total of nine games will be played in this pool in a 3-week period.

Initially, the team that would finish in last place in this Pool would have to play in a Promotion/Relegation Play-Off. However, due to the abbreviated season, which began late due to the coronavirus, it was decided that there would be no promotion and/or relegation this year.

Last season, a best-of-five Play-Down format was used (nr. 5 vs. nr. 8 and nr. 6 vs. nr. 7). This season, the Pool-format will be used again this season. After completion of the Bottom-4 Pool, the teams will participate in the Cup Competition, which was added to the postseason in June.

Tonight, both teams scored a run in the third inning, then DSS/Kinheim trailed 3-1 halfway the sixth. DSS/Kinheim came alongside in the bottom of the sixth and went on to score the winning run on a walk-off wild pitch.

DSS/Kinheim collected eight basehits, including three by Bram Blokker. For Storks, Luuk Visser recorded two of his team's four basehits.

(September 10)

DSS/Kinheim-starter Jelle Bing retired the first six batters he faced (five infield-outs). The righthander then gave up the first Storks-run without allowing a basehit.

Bing hit lead-off hitter Joost van den Bergh with a pitch, then an error followed on a force play-grounder by Jurian Hansen. Hereafter, Van den Bergh was forced out on third base on a bunt by Kelvin Knape. With runners on first and second base, another force play-grounder followed, this time by Joel Hernandez. On his grounder, Knape was eliminated, but Hansen advanced to third base. And so, instead of having three outs, there were now runners at the corners with two outs. A double-steal followed and Hansen scored the first run. Hereafter, a rare sitiatuon followed. With Stephen Henson hitting and getting a strike-two call, DSS/Kinheim-catcher Aidan Finnegan rolled the ball back to the mound and left walking back to the dug-out, thinking it was a strikeout. Instead, the count was 1-2. On this error, Hernandez moved to third base. But he stranded there, as Henson did strikeout moments later.

Storks-starter Twan Naessens also started well. He gave up an one-out single to Jochem Koedijk in the bottom of the first inning, but he was caught stealing. The righthander retired the side in the second inning, but then also gave up a run in the third at bat.

With two outs, Bram Blokker singled for the home-team. Hereafter, Naessens got the bases loaded when he walked Thomas Bos and Jochem Koedijk. A wild pitch then enabled Blokker to score the tying run. The bases were re-loaded when Jeldwin Orman also walked, but Naessens then closed by striking out Kevin Nieveld.

Storks immediately re-took the lead in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Jelle Bing hit Ibrahin Redan with a pitch. He stole second base, then scored on a following single by Jurriaan Dijk, who later was caught stealing himself.

Bing retired the side in the fifth, then gave up another run in the top of the sixth. He walked lead-off hitter Joel Hernandez, who moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Stephen Henson. Next, Hernandez scored on a single by Luuk Visser to put Storks ahead, 3-1. After the latter had stolen second base, Ibrahin Redan walked, but the two runners were left behind.

In both the fourth and fifth inning, DSS/Kinheim got its lead-off hitter on base. In the fourth, Aidan Finnegan led off with a single, but stranded on first base. And in the fifth, Bram Blokker led off with a double. He moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Thomas Bos, but then also was left behind.

Trailing 3-1, DSS/Kinheim also got its lead-off batter on base in the bottom of the sixth and the team went on to come alongside. Kevin Nieveld led off with a walk and Aidan Finnegan followed with a single. Hereafter, Nieveld was forced out on a bunt by Donny Kuijper, which was followed by a throwing error by Naessens. Moments later, Finnegan scored on a single by Nick Hofer, which narrowed the deficit to 3-2. That led to a pitching change. Diornick Sanchez took over, while Wesley van Hemert was inserted a pinch-runner for Kuijper at second base. Van Hemert advanced to third base while Hofer was forced out on a grounder by Marcel Tolenaars. Moments later, Van Hemert scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Shortly hereafter, Bram Blokker flied out, but it had become a new ballgame.

With the score tied at 3-3, Rick Timmermans took over the pitching for DSS/Kinheim in the top of the seventh. He gave up an one-out single to Jurian Hansen, but he was caught stealing.

In the top of the eighth, Timmermans gave up a 2-out double to Luuk Visser and was relieved by Robyn Clara. His walk to Ibrahin Redan ended in a wild pitch, which enabled Visser to advance to third base. But the two runners stranded as Clara closed with a strikeout. He then retired the side (two strikeouts) in the ninth.

Storks-reliever Diornick Sanchez retired the side in the seventh. He walked Wesley van Hemert with two outs in the eighth, but he stranded on first base.

But Sanchez then ran into problems in the bottom of the ninth. The righthander walked Marcel Tolenaars, who was replaced by pinch-runner Mitchel Dautzenberg. DSS/Kinheim then got the bases loaded thanks to two nice bunt-singles. First, there was a bunt towards third base by Bram Blokker (his third basehit tonight) and that was followed by a bunt-single in front of the plate by Tijmen Nagel, who had become the team's new short stop in the eighth. With the bases now loaded, the first delivery by Sanchez to next batter Jochem Koedijk ended in a walk-off wild pitch, as it enabled Dautzenberg to score the winning run.

With that, three of the four runs scored by DSS/Kinheim were scored on a wild pitch!
