DSS/Kinheim also nips Storks in second game
Nederlands

THE HAGUE (Neth.) - DSS/Kinheim nipped Silicon Storks 2-1 in the second game of their 3-game series on Saturday (September 12).

For DSS/Kinheim, this was the second consecutive one-run difference victory. On Thursday, then team trailed, but won 4-3 on a walk-off wild pitch.

Today, DSS/Kinheim opened the score in the second inning, but Storks came alongside in the fourth. The Haarlem-team re-took the lead in the eighth.

DSS/Kinheim collected seven basehits, which were hit by four players. Bram Blokker, Jochem Koedijk and Nick Hofer all had two hits.

Storks got only two basehits today off of two pitchers.

(September 12)

DSS/Kinheim scored its first run today in the top of the second inning off of Storks-starter Nick Winkel. The righthander retired the side in the first inning. In the second inning, he got five baserunners, but DSS/Kinheim scored only one run.

Winkel began the second inning by walking Kevin Nieveld and Wesley van Hemert. The latter was forced out on a grounder by Donny Kuijper, then Nick Hofer delivered a runscoring single. With two outs, Winkel got the bases loaded when he also walked Tijmen Takke. But three runners were left behind when Winkel closed with a strikeout.

After Winkel had retired the side in both the third and fourth inning, his teammates scored the tying run in the bottom of the fourth.

DSS/Kinheim-starter Glenn Wassink got only one baserunner in the first three innings he threw. With one out in the second inning, the righthander walked Jurriaan Dijk. He stole second base, but was left behind. Wassink also walked lead-off hitter Stephen Henson in the bottom of the fourth. He moved on a grounder by Luuk Visser, stole third base, then scored when Ibrahin Redan reached on an error. Redan advanced on a wild pitch, but stranded on second base.

Glenn Wassink retired the side in the fifth and so, he took a No-Hitter into the sixth inning. But that ended when Joel Hernandez led off with a single. He also stranded on second base. Wassink retired the side again in the seventh.

Nick Winkel also did fine after giving the run in the second inning. After having retired eight batters in a row (three strikeouts), Winkel walked Tijmen Nagel with one out in the top of the fifth inning, then got the bases loaded when Bram Blokker and Jochem Koedijk both singled. The inning then ended with a 5-2-3 double play. Jeldwin Orman grounded to third baseman Kelvin Knape, who forced out Nagel at the plate, then catcher Jurriaan Dijk got the ball in time to first baseman Joost van den Bergh to complete the inning-ending double play.

With two outs in the sixth, Winkel struckout Donny Kuijper, but he reached, as strike-three was a passed ball. But moments later, catcher Jurriaan Dijk recovered from this and eliminated Kuijper at first base with a pick-off.

DSS/Kinheim again reached base with two outs in the seventh. This time, Tijmen Nagel walked for the third time and Bram Blokker singled. But the latter was then forced out on a following grounder.

In the top of the eighth, DSS/Kinheim broke the 1-1 tie off of new pitcher Diornick Sanchez. With one out, Kevin Nieveld doubled and Wesley van Hemert was hit by a pitch. With two runners on base, Sanchez struckout Donny Kuijper, who argued the strikeout-call and was ejected by Home Plate Umpire Peter de Haan. After being ejected Kuijper, who was the designated hitter, never was replaced by another player. That would have been done in case his spot would have come up to bat in the ninth inning. At that moment, a pinch-hitter was inserted. That means that DSS/Kinheim played with an 8-man batting order in the last 1½ inning. With two outs, Nieveld scored the go-ahead run on a double by Nick Hofer, who also had batted in the first run in the second inning.

With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Glenn Wassink walked Kelvin Knape and was relieved by Robyn Clara. He got an inning-ending double play.

In the top of the ninth, still leading only 2-1, Jochem Koedijk hit the ball into right-centerfield for DSS/Kinheim with two outs. He tried to stretch his single it into a double, but was eliminated at second base.

In the bottom of the ninth, the game ended with a crucial umpiring decision. Stephen Henson led off for Storks with a single, then Luuk Visser flied out. Hereafter, Robyn Clara struckout Ibrahin Redan, while Henson took off to steal second base. But Henson then also was called out by Home Plate Umpire Peter de Haan, due to interference by Redan after he had struckout. And that resulted in some discussions, but it also ended the game.
